But as this year’s strike went on, the guild and its vocal supporters made clear that any hosts restarting their shows during this walkout would not be showered with likes. members have said that something like his return to air would today be considered strikebreaking because airing the show inevitably involves creative work that constitutes writing. The producers of today’s returning talk shows, of course, disagree. Regardless, I don’t think today’s backlash is the result of contract wording or a philosophical shift on the nature of the scribe’s craft. (David Letterman returned to air with a full staff because his production company, Worldwide Pants, struck its own deal with the writers.)

Here's a look at what's happening, and what may happen, with the awards that have been thrown off course. Because they are still tied to the traditional fall-through-spring broadcast television season, the Emmys have been among the few awards shows held in September. The January date will put the Emmys within the rest of Hollywood's awards season, when red carpets rule and performers are on the promotional prowl. It would also throw the Oscars, and the entire awards season, into doubt. ___For more on the actors and writers strikes, visit: https://apnews.com/hub/hollywood-strikes/

But these tales have special resonance when they involve talk show hosts because their affable, easygoing charm is elemental to their appeal. They’re friendly and they’re easy to talk to — that’s the whole point. It is a direct effect of the way these shows are structured. Off air, the ambience can be like the hold of a Roman galley: Everybody’s rowing, but the flogging can get unpleasant. Their success depends on their ability to convince an audience that it genuinely knows them.

I'm a smug 30-year-old journalist who grew-up (mostly) computer literate. It wasn't enough to stop me from giving my credit card information to a USPS smishing scam. Haven Orecchio-EgresitzWhen my (non-biological) grandmother moved to Norway, I sent her a small package with some art my 1-year-old made. I then opened it on my laptop so I could click around and make sure it was actually the USPS. You know, that sassy department that sends you scathing emails warning you not to fall for phishing attempts.

Items up for auction range from a standard desk chair to a large bird cage welded with a Twitter logo bird and everything in between. On top of the more outlandish items, Twitter is looking to get rid of office equipment including desks, chairs and refrigerators. The auction, run by Heritage Global Partners (HGP), opens September 12 and runs for two days in San Francisco. Twitter also put memorabilia up for auction in January, trying to offload similar items. X and HGP did not immediately respond to CNN’s request for comment on the auction.

What Is It About Montecito?
  + stars: | 2023-07-30 | by ( Amy Larocca | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
Montecito is where Gwyneth Paltrow goes when the pressures of Brentwood are too much. Jennifer Aniston bought a $16.5 million property from Ms. Winfrey, who had not had time to use it. But it’s not just the famous who come to Montecito, it’s also the straight-up rich. Montecito is loaded with the less-recognizable names behind very recognizable things, including Ty Warner, the press-shy inventor of Beanie Babies, who lives in a rose-colored mansion with views of the whole landscape. It’s a dizzying combination of old wealth, new wealth and outrageous physical beauty that has begun to attract an ever-wider range of dreamers.

Threads, the new social app from Meta, had a fast start this month when it racked up 100 million downloads in less than a week. We compiled a list of 15 of some of the most-followed celebrities and high-profile figures on Twitter who joined Threads, including Katy Perry, Ellen DeGeneres, Bill Gates, Britney Spears, Shakira and Oprah Winfrey. Then we compared their activity on Twitter with their activity on Threads every day since July 5, when Threads was released. We also looked at what they did on Instagram, which is owned by Meta and developed Threads. What we found is just an early snapshot, but it may provide some clues to where Threads is headed.

What is gender dysphoria, and is it a mental disorder?
  + stars: | 2023-07-19 | by ( Kristen Rogers | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +10 min
Gender identity, an aspect of gender, is a person’s “psychological sense of their gender,” the American Psychological Association says. Symptoms of gender dysphoriaFor an adolescent or adult to be diagnosed with gender dysphoria, they must be experiencing certain criteria for gender dysphoria, along with clinically significant distress or functional impairment, according to the American Psychiatric Association. Not every person who doesn’t identify with their assigned gender experiences gender dysphoria, particularly the distress and impairment. Because gender dysphoria is included in the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, also called the DSM, it is diagnosed as a mental disorder, experts said. But the gender incongruence — having a gender identity that’s not the one assigned at birth — isn’t what makes gender dysphoria a mental disorder.

It’s not that they’re bigger, they just became louder,” said Rob Eric, “Queer Eye” executive producer and longtime associate and friend of Collins and Williams. They’ve also enjoyed seeing the legacy they’ve created evolve and grow to new heights with Netflix’s gender-neutral and more succinctly titled “Queer Eye” – which wrapped its seventh season earlier this year. “The new ‘Queer Eye’ wouldn’t happen without these guys,” Collins said.

Threads: An Early Vibe Check
  + stars: | 2023-07-07 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
I come to you with a breaking news vibes report from Threads, the new Twitter clone that Mark Zuckerberg unveiled on Wednesday. It has already signed up 30 million users, according to Zuckerberg, and appears to be the most rapidly downloaded app ever. “Can’t get enough of your threads,” the actress Jennifer Lopez said in a Threads post. For an app that has caused a lot of drama — Twitter is already threatening legal action — the user experience feels basic, even rote. If there’s a dominant topic of conversation, it’s how weird it is to be on Threads.

Another two hours later, five million people had downloaded Threads. When he woke on Thursday morning, the app had been downloaded more than 30 million times, he said. In less than a day, Threads — which is aimed as a rival to Twitter — appears to have taken the crown as the most rapidly downloaded app ever. It easily outstripped ChatGPT, the chatbot, which was downloaded one million times within its first five days, according to OpenAI, ChatGPT’s maker. Some of Twitter’s most-followed users — such as Ellen DeGeneres, Bill Gates, Shakira and Oprah Winfrey — immediately joined Threads and began posting.

In 2017, Walt Disney World unveiled an animatronic of then-President Donald Trump. It just looks wrong in a way that doesn't make any sense to my brain," Goldman told Insider. Goldman said the appeal of the Clinton-Trump animatronic conspiracy lies partially in its harmlessness but also its humor. One by one, as streaming services grow in popularity, old standbys of the TV landscape are falling by the wayside. The number of soap operas, a decades-old linchpin of daytime television, has fallen to a small handful. Hit daytime talk shows — once hosted by the likes of Phil Donahue, Oprah Winfrey and Ellen DeGeneres — are becoming rarer by the year. On CBS, one of the longest-running shows, “The Price Is Right,” is getting a new studio. This week, Sony, the studio behind both “Jeopardy!” and “Wheel of Fortune,” gave the genre an emphatic vote of confidence.

CNN —Hailey Bieber is sharing more about her thoughts on growing her family with husband Justin Bieber. In a recent interview with The Sunday Times, the model and entrepreneur reportedly said she would like to have kids but worries about the public scrutiny the couple faces. “It’s enough that people say things about my husband or my friends,” she said. “I can’t imagine having to confront people saying things about a child.”She and Justin Bieber got engaged in July 2018. Despite her concerns, Hailey Bieber said she isn’t going to let fear keep her from welcoming children.
After the 10 days, cast members must decide whether they want to get engaged to another contestant sight unseen — or go home. The season-two contestant Nick Thompson said "Love Is Blind" didn't adequately support its cast members — during or after filming. Many cast members believed "Love Is Blind" would be a cut above other reality shows. The first evening in Cancún, producers told Ruhl she couldn't attend a party for all the newly engaged couples because they thought she might have COVID-19. In a later episode he again became infuriated and threatened to leave when Reed came home late from clubbing with other cast members.

Bill Gates was asked whether his private jet makes him a "hypocrite" while funding climate innovation. Gates disagreed, saying he pays for carbon offsets and his jet helps further his climate fundraising. Gates was asked in an interview with the BBC in Kenya what his response would be to someone who would call him a hypocrite for being a "climate change campaigner" while also flying "around the world in a private jet." On Reddit, the Microsoft cofounder has said his private jet is his "guilty pleasure" and his "big splurge." "That is too difficult," Gates told Bloomberg's Zero podcast.
From start to finish, Tuesday's 80th annual Golden Globe Awards was a very queer affair. Here are some of the evening's queerest (and gay Twitter meme-worthy) moments. The 26-year-old actor, who already has two Emmy awards for the same role, was not present to accept her Golden Globe. High-functioning depression is a colloquial term and not a technical clinical diagnosis, explains Rheeda Walker, Ph.D., psychologist and leading researcher on suicide in the Black community. Persistent depressive disorder is another official diagnosis that, for some patients, may include high-functioning depression, Walker says. But she also stresses that because high-functioning depression is not a technical diagnosis, she’s hesitant to say they’re the same. But a 2021 study indicates the Black suicide rate is likely higher than documented because the manner of death is often misclassified. If you’re concerned about a loved one attempting suicide, Walker notes that anxiety is “as strong a predictor” as depression.
Television writer and producer Ryan Murphy, creator of hits from “Glee” to “9-1-1” and “American Horror Story,” will receive a lifetime achievement honor at Hollywood’s Golden Globes ceremony next month. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the group that votes on the Golden Globes, said it would celebrate Murphy’s contributions to television with its fourth Carol Burnett Award. Murphy, 57, won fans for his musical TV series “Glee” from 2009 to 2015. His other credits include anthology series “American Horror Story,” drama series “9-1-1” and “Pose,” a show that broke ground with a large transgender cast. The HFPA also said this week it would honor comedian Eddie Murphy with the Cecil B. DeMille award, a lifetime achievement award for film work, at the January ceremony.
