Hong Kong CNN —Police in southern China have detained the driver of a car that plowed into people exercising in the grounds of an outdoor sports center on Monday evening, leaving scores injured. A car “hit multiple pedestrians and then fled the scene” at the Zhuhai Sports Center in the southern city of Zhuhai at around 8 p.m. Monday, police said in a statement. The driver, a 62-year-old man, is in police custody, the statement said, adding that investigations are underway. The Zhuhai Sports Center features an outdoor track and field and is frequented by local residents for daily exercises. But it has faced a spate of attacks targeting random members of the public, including school children, in recent months.

New York CNN —On Wednesday morning, conspiracy theorist Alex Jones’ notorious Infowars media empire will go up for auction in a court-mandated sale, and at least one bid is in the “seven-figure” range, a person familiar with the matter told CNN. Jones was found guilty of defamation by juries in Texas and Connecticut for using his Infowars megaphone to falsely claim the massacre was a hoax. But if “bad guys” buy Infowars, as Jones put it Monday, he’ll “keep broadcasting until they show up” after the Wednesday auction and shut down the fringe outlet. The Onion CEO Ben Collins was previously a journalist at NBC where he extensively covered disinformation and conspiracy theorists, including Jones and Infowars. A suspect was taken into custody Thursday after police in Kenosha, Wisconsin, said a teenager attempted to enter an area elementary school while potentially armed. According to authorities, a person attempted to enter Roosevelt Elementary School in Kenosha “with suspicious bags.” When confronted by school staff in the entryway of the building, the person fled the school into a nearby neighborhood, officials said. The school was placed on a “secure hold” and just after 2 p.m. Thursday, authorities said a 13-year-old was arrested. Surveillance footage released by Kenosha Police on Thursday appears to show a teen suspect in the thwarted elementary school shooting. “Today we experienced something that all school staff and families fear — a potential school shooting,” Kenosha Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Jeff Weiss said at the news conference, according to NBC affiliate station TMJ4.

At least five people were injured after heavy rain and tornadoes ripped through Oklahoma Saturday night leading into Sunday morning. CNN —Police in Toronto, Canada, are opening a hate crime investigation after shots were fired overnight into the window of a Jewish girls’ elementary school – the second time this year the school was targeted by gunfire, officials said. The investigation into the incident will be led by the agency’s Gun and Gang Task Force with assistance from its hate crime unit, he added. There were no injuries or reports of gunshots heard, and the building was empty because the school is currently closed for the Jewish High Holidays, Krawczyk said. The same school was also hit with gunfire in a similar incident in May, Krawczyk said. The agency has increased police presence in Jewish neighborhoods in recent weeks and will also do so at the school as the investigation unfolds, Krawczyk said.
