Why America's Electric Car Push Isn't Working
  + stars: | 2024-01-03 | by ( Paris Marx | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +12 min
Electric vehicles were supposed to be inevitable. Auto execs who were once trumpeting the potential of electric cars are even publicly acknowledging that EVs aren't working . In September, 87% of new-vehicle sales were fully electric vehicles. Plus, heavier electric vehicles are harder on roads, produce more air pollution, and pose a greater safety risk for pedestrians. Time for a rethinkThe shift from gas-powered cars to electric vehicles is an opportunity to rethink how Americans get from place to place.

Support for the autoworkers fell short of the 55% support for striking Hollywood writers and actors in an AP-NORC poll conducted last month. In the new AP-NORC survey, 51% say labor unions help U.S. workers while only 15% say they hurt working people. About one-third say unions help the U.S. economy, while 22% say they damage the economy. That’s better for the consumers.”The United Auto Workers went on strike Sept. 15 against Ford, General Motors and Stellantis, which owns the Jeep, Dodge and Ram brands. In fact, auto loan interest rates are the highest they’ve been since 2007, when the world was heading into a massive financial crisis. More than 70% of buyers of new large SUVs now have monthly payments over $1,000. Keep it shortPeople often try to reduce their monthly payments by taking out longer loans. Spreading the payments over more years can keep the monthly amount lower, but it means you’re paying more in interest. Leasing is another way to keep monthly payments down.

CNN —People shopping for electric vehicles starting next year will be able to get a $7,500 federal tax credit off the sticker price while at the dealership, rather than having to wait months to receive their tax returns. The changes to how car buyers can get the federal tax break on EVs — part of the Inflation Reduction Act — were announced by the Biden administration on Friday, and are being rolled out to car dealerships before they take effect starting January 1. More foreign companies are building EV factories in the US in order to take advantage of the tax credits in the future. The Biden administration is currently contacting dealers with information on how they register with a new federal website to eventually offer consumers up-front tax credits. Car dealers will then be reimbursed by the government within 72 hours of selling the car, according to a Treasury news release.

The world needs affordable EVs more than ever as electric cars will play a big role in hcelping countries cut planet-heating pollution. “When legacy [carmakers] talk about catching up to Tesla or catching up to the leading Chinese automakers, it’s difficult. It is by far the world’s biggest EV battery manufacturer and dominant in the supply and processing of many critical components needed to make the batteries. Global automakers have had little choice but to enter into joint ventures with Chinese EV and battery manufacturers. EU lawmakers have voiced concerns that government subsidies allow Chinese EV makers to keep prices artificially low, creating unfair competition for European rivals.

Lisa Baertlein | ReutersVietnamese electric vehicle maker VinFast's ambitious plan to deliver as many as 50,000 vehicles this year is "unrealistic," according to one analyst. VinFast said it expects to deliver 40,000 to 50,000 vehicles in 2023 despite a weak global economy. In April, Green SM launched a pure EV taxi service in Vietnam with VinFast models. "VinFast's ambitious EV plan seems unrealistic. For example, VinFast's VF9 model is priced from $83,000 whereas the Tesla Model X is priced from $68,590 after federal tax credit and gas savings.

But extracting these metals via deep-sea mining has become a lightning rod for global controversy, as many fear the potential ecological disruptions it could cause in a part of our planet that remains largely unexplored. The Metals Company has announced that it's planning to submit its application next summer and begin exploitation in 2025, leaving many concerned about the potential implications. "What I am absolutely convinced of is that we can slow down or maybe even stop the growth in rainforest nickel," Barron said. Deep-sea mining avoids the emissions associated with blasting, as well as sulfidic tailings, a waste material that can contaminate groundwater. The first piece of steel for the Stellantis and Samsung joint venture EV battery plant is raised earlier this year. Many believe the company will decide to have other work done at the Kokomo plants, even if it no longer needs transmissions or engines. A fraction of auto plant payThe Kokomo battery plant is still more than a year away from starting production. The battery plant workers are likely to start at half that, Quirk said. New York CNN —The US Department of Energy said Thursday it plans to fuel the auto industry’s transition to electric vehicles with $12 billion in loans and grants. Hard on the heels of President Joe Biden’s goal to spur the sale of EVs in the United States, the Energy Department will provide $2 billion in grants and $10 billion in loans to support the conversion of US automaker and supplier facilities into manufacturing centers for hybrid and electric vehicles. The program aims to build or refurbish factories in communities with existing auto manufacturing facilities and to bolster the domestic EV supply chain. The Energy Department also said it plans to invest a separate $3.5 billion to boost US production of advanced batteries and battery materials to support the country’s transition to electric vehicles and clean energy. It also noted that light duty vehicles, the average cars Americans drive, account for 58% of those emissions.

"At this pace, China is on track to overtake Japan by the end of the year," Moody's economists wrote, a global ranking which Japan has claimed since 2019. According to Moody's projections, China produces more than half the world's lithium supply, thanks to its low labor costs compared to rivals Japan and South Korea. Moody's AnalyticsAs a result, some of the world's largest auto companies have set up production facilities in China, including Tesla and BMW . The Asia-Pacific region, which is home to some of the world's largest auto exporting powerhouses such as South Korea, China and Japan, has seen a mixed recovery in auto exports, Moody's highlighted.

Vietnam's electric vehicle market appears poised for rapid expansion in the next decade, but there could be significant headwinds blunting that growth. According to BMI Research, a Fitch Solutions research unit, passenger EV sales in the country is expected to at least double this year. "In 2023, we expect passenger EV sales to expand by 114.8% year-on-year to reach around 18,000 units," said BMI's report published Thursday. Specifically, sales for battery electric vehicle (BEV) could surge by 104.4% compared to the previous year to nearly 17,000 units, the report said. The penetration rate for passenger EVs — defined as passenger EV sales as a percentage of the country's total passenger vehicle sales — is set to increase to 13.6% by 2030.

DETROIT – A surprise deal between Ford Motor and Tesla on electric vehicle charging technology and infrastructure could put new pressure on other automakers' EV strategies. The tie-up between the two rivals will give Ford owners access to more than 12,000 Tesla Superchargers across the U.S. and Canada, starting early next year. More importantly, Ford's next generation of EVs — expected by mid-decade — will use Tesla's charging plug, allowing owners of Ford vehicles to charge at Tesla Superchargers without an adapter. Ford CEO Jim Farley and Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced the deal Thursday during a live audio discussion on Twitter Spaces. Tesla vehicles and its Supercharger network use what's known as NACS.
DETROIT – Ford Motor will partner with Tesla on charging initiatives for its current and future electric vehicles in an unusual tie-up between the two rivals, CEOs of the automakers announced Thursday. Under the agreement current Ford owners will be granted access to more than 12,000 Tesla Superchargers across the U.S. and Canada, starting early next year, via the use of an adapter. And, Ford's next-generation of EVs — expected by mid-decade — will include Tesla's charging plug, allowing owners of Ford vehicles to charge at Tesla Superchargers without an adapter, making Ford among the first automakers to explicitly tie into the network. A Ford spokesman said the company has "this option available to us but have no news to share today." A separate Ford spokesman told CNBC that pricing for charging "will be competitive in the marketplace."
As of now, CATL has 13 factories worldwide that supply batteries for Tesla, Toyota, and Daimler. And thanks to its ownership of its battery supply chain, it's able to make cars cheaply. Stevenson-Yang sees parts of China's battery supply chain as the next glut it will need to dump. But the potential of a battery supply glut tomorrow doesn't help carmakers meet their needs today. "But if we're looking at evolutionary improvements, China Battery Inc. will still dominate.
Ford Mustang Mach-E is presented at the New York International Auto Show, in Manhattan, New York City, April 5, 2023. DETROIT – Ford Motor is once again cutting the starting prices of its electric Mustang Mach-E by thousands of dollars, as the automaker increases production of the crossover and reopens order banks for the vehicle. The Detroit automaker said Tuesday it will lower pricing of the Mach-E by a range of $1,000 to $4,000. The cuts will make the starting price of the vehicle fall between $42,995 and $59,995. The cuts are the latest price adjustments in the electric vehicle market following Tesla cutting prices several times this year, but also slightly raising prices on some models this week.
A lack of access to public electric car charging is a huge barrier to EV adoption. More than seven out of every 10 EV chargers are in the richest US counties, according to Bumper. Meanwhile, more than 95% of EV chargers are in counties with majority-white populations. And while over 63% of the counties in the US have charging stations, 36% of counties do not. Data indicates there were more than 51,000 public EV charging stations in the US as of March, with over 131,000 plugs.
A $4,000 tax credit for used EVswatch nowThe Inflation Reduction Act also created a tax credit for consumers who buy used electric or fuel-cell vehicles. The tax break for used cars, which took effect this year, is worth $4,000 or 30% of the sale price, whichever is less. Those income limits are "much lower" than the one that applies to the $7,500 tax credit for new vehicles, said Katherine Breaks, a managing director in KPMG's tax credit and energy advisory services group. The modern car shopping experience, from initial research to final purchase, can now be done online — and the pandemic accelerated that shift. Others are emulating firms like Carvana and moving some parts of the buying process online. We don't exactly know how the car business is going to look going forward with this EV shift, and how much the EV shift is actually going to take place." Ford has set stringent requirements for its dealers to sell EVs — though some dealers have called its EV certification program unfair and dropped out. Some dealers are having a hard time committing to changes when the return on investment — especially with EVs — isn't yet clear.
