"If there is a regime shift, then what has worked could be quite different from what does work," McLennan said. That means the growth stocks that dominated for years may come back to earth in the mid-2020s. He also recommends that investors diversify away from growth stocks that thrived under low rates and instead broaden out to value-oriented names. Valuations explain 80% of a stock's returns over a decade, according to Bank of America. Smead sees energy in stocks in Canada also outperforming in the coming decade, as well as European banks.

NEW YORK, Nov 8 (Reuters) - Fear has plunged in the U.S. equity market following last week's explosive rally, and some options mavens are urging clients to stock up on portfolio protection while it's cheap. Meanwhile, the Cboe Volatility Index (.VIX), known as Wall Street's fear gauge, has tumbled to its lowest level in seven weeks. They recommended taking advantage of the drop in volatility to deploy stock replacement trades, which involve swapping long stock positions for cheap call options that would reap gains if the market continued to rally. Investors' equity positioning fell to a five-month low before last week's rally, Deutsche Bank data showed. With investors less exposed to stocks, "they don't necessarily need to be rushing to get hedges now," Murphy said.

Michael Burry, best known for calling 2008's subprime mortgage crisis, just added a new notch in his belt by predicting the latest market correction led by tech stocks. The California-based investor, who now runs his hedge fund Scion Asset Management, had amassed massive bets against the stock market in the second quarter. These 20,000 options contracts were against shares worth $738.8 million at the end of the second quarter. These two indices fell into correction territory this week , making Burry's bets lucrative in theory. Also in the second quarter, Burry bought small stakes in travel names Expedia and MGM Resorts , as well as health care plays Cigna and CVS Health .

On Friday, the S & P 500 closed below its 200-day moving average for the first time since March 17. If the total-return version of the index closes below that level for five straight days, then the $2 billion Pacer Trendpilot US Large Cap ETF (PTLC) will automatically sell some of its all-stock portfolio to shift to a 50-50 split between equities and Treasury bills. And if the 200-day moving average itself then starts to fall, the fund will go to 100% T-bills. Still, the fund's rule tied to the 200-day moving average is an example of how the move of a stock or index across a widely-followed indicator can cause volatility. Year to date, the fund is up just under 5% — well below the gain of more than 11% for the SPDR S & P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) .

The Cboe Volatility Index , commonly referred to simply as "the VIX", is an index derived from 30-day S & P 500 index options prices. Put simply, the VIX represents the options market's expectations for S & P 500 volatility over the next 30 days. Sometimes referred to as a "fear index", Friday's VIX Index closing level of 19.32 is only slightly below the 6-month high of 20.09 seen on May 4th. Financials significantly outperformed, finishing Friday up 0.2% while the S & P overall fell by 0.5%. Bearish views on the stock market culminated in the sale of an estimated record of $40 billion of S & P 500 stock index futures over the past five sessions, but that selling pressure is about to ease, according to a note from the Goldman Sachs trading desk. Hedge funds that use a managed futures strategy (Commodity Trading Advisors, or CTAs) recently unwound positions in S & P 500 futures at the greatest speed and magnitude "on record," Goldman said. With most of those positions now squared away, however, Goldman claims "we are closer to the end of this sell pressure than not." Goldman said lower risk, lowest cost trades are available in one-month call options on the SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF Trust , Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund , Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund and SPDR S & P 500 ETF Trust . Analyst Peng Cheng found the electric vehicle maker suffered the highest outflows of all individual stocks from retail investors in the past week. That's part of a bigger trend among individual investors of gradually selling mega-cap technology names, the analyst added. In the past week, retail investors pulled a net $411 million freom Tesla. Fellow mega-cap tech stocks Amazon and Meta Platforms were also among the most sold by individual investors last week. That means it would eclipse even the SPDR S & P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) , which tracks the S & P 500.

As a result, investing in equal-weighted ETFs that provide a more diversified approach and offer exposure to old economy-linked sectors such as energy and manufacturing are coming back in favor as investors look to broaden their exposure beyond Big Tech. Investors are voting with their cash in August and shifting money away from funds that focus on stocks, according to Strategas. The S & P 500 has slumped 4% in August, as the stock market appears to be caught in a late-summer doldrum and interest rates have spiked. Money market funds took in +$40 Bn last week, plus ultra-short duration bond ETFs saw over $1 Bn inflows on Thursday, a threshold usually reserved for uneasy environments," Sohn said in a note to clients Tuesday. Money market funds have been particularly popular this year, as high interest rates have made them attractive places for consumers and investors to park their short-term cash. Money market assets have increased $749 billion over the past six months, according to Strategas, which includes the period of the regional bank crisis earlier this year.

Greenlight Capital's David Einhorn said he's getting concerned about the stock market after a strong rally and has added sizable downside protection to his portfolio. Between January and June, the S & P 500 popped 15.9% for its best first half since 2019. Einhorn, 54, believes inflation remains a big risk even though data has suggested easing price pressures.
