When it comes to dividend funds, the Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF is “the gold standard,” according to Morningstar. The exchange-traded fund seeks to track the total return of the Dow Jones U.S. Dividend 100 Index. Therefore, it is not like its peers that track a broad market index, Jackson pointed out. It also looks at return on equity, dividend yield and the dividend growth rate over the past five years. After the stocks are selected, the index market cap weighs them, with a maximum position around 4%.

There's a lot to like right now in the fixed income market, according to BlackRock's Rick Rieder. He finds European credit, both investment grade and BB-rated high yield, attractive in part because of the strong U.S. dollar. They have also added high quality CLOs and high-quality European securitized assets. "We're getting more yield than BB high yield. We're getting almost as much yield as full high yield — and our volatility is 60% of that market, just because we diversified," Rieder said.

Investors looking for protection against market downside are turning toward buffer exchange-traded funds, also known as defined-outcome ETFs. Buffer ETFs have exploded in popularity in recent years, although they are still a small slice over the overall industry. How buffer ETFs work Managers use a set of equity options when building a fund. Recently, Calamos announced a new product line of 12 ETFs that offers 100% downside protection. The first in the line, Calamos S & P 500 Structured Alt Protection ETF (CPSM) , began trading May 1.

Shares of Apple surged 6% on Friday as investors cheered better-than-expected fiscal second-quarter results and the announcement of the biggest stock buyback program in U.S. corporate history. In theory, Apple's $110 billion stock buyback program should provide a boost to its share price. However, recent history shows that spending billions on share repurchases isn't guaranteed to make the stock a runaway winner. So they've been retiring these shares," Nathan said. Investors weighing a shift into dividend stocks may be better off focusing on companies with big share buyback programs instead, according to Bank of America. The idea behind focusing on stock buybacks is that companies that can use excess cash to reduce their share count through buybacks are likely on strong financial footing. This is more of a pure-play buyback fund, tracking the Nasdaq US Buyback Achievers Index. To be sure, stock buybacks are a frequent target of politicians and their tax treatment could change in the years ahead. President Joe Biden called for raising the corporate tax rate for stock buybacks at his State of the Union address last week.

Bitcoin prices have rebounded since 2023, recovering from steep declines in the couple of years before. On Tuesday, bitcoin prices reached a two-year high of over $56,000. Ark Invest's chief futurist, Brett Winton, believes that a "responsible allocation to innovation generally is really, really critical." On average, Ark Invest's research shows that the "optimal" allocation to maximize risk-adjusted returns — on a five-year time horizon — would be 4.8% on average since 2015. The breakdown of Ark Innovation ETF's tech investments is as follows: cryptocurrencies make up 6.9% of it, and digital wallets 8.8%, among other tech themes.

There are various ETFs that hold recent IPOs, including the Renaissance Capital Greenwich Funds' Renaissance IPO ETF (IPO) . The 200-day moving average is the most popular long-term moving average and one of the best long-term trend indicators. The IPO ETF bounced from the line last fall and has been trading above it through the first two months of 2024. Seeing IPO stay above the upward sloping 200-day moving average is the best-case scenario. Two IPO Holdings Investors should be aware the IPO ETF isn't very liquid, meaning that its average daily volume isn't robust.

Two funds investing in defensive stocks are the only exchange-traded funds in the world that had a positive return every year over the past decade, CNBC Pro research has found. The two funds stood out among 8,300 equity ETFs worldwide screened by CNBC Pro using FactSet data. Over that period, the ETF more than doubled investors' money, with a cumulative total price gain of 118%. While the MSCI Healthcare index, valued in euros, dipped slightly into negative territory in 2016, 2020 and 2022, the Amundi ETF's total returns have remained positive because of the weakness in the pound sterling. However, Tabet also pointed out that the health-care sector, especially European pharma, tends to underperform in election years.

An ETF that's down 80% from its all-time high or one that is up 110% from its all-time low? Both of these outlandish percent moves describe the AdvisorShares Pure US Cannabis ETF (MSOS) , which is down 80% from its February '21 high and now up 110% from its October '23 low. The only discernable point here is the spike in early February'21, which lined up exactly with the ETF's all-time high. The ETF had flirted with piercing this line before – most recently this past fall - but each attempt failed before 2024. Any index, ETF or stock that's in a long-term uptrend is trading above an upward sloping 200-day moving average.

In a sea of income-generating exchange-traded funds, BlackRock 's actively managed Flexible Income ETF (BINC) seeks to stand out with a multisector approach that balances high quality and high yield. "The way we built this portfolio is marrying high yield, investment-grade credit, agency mortgages and securitized [products]," Rieder said in an interview. Rieder said he's investing more in European high yield these days because of the strong U.S. dollar. "That is really attractive — and European high yield is cheaper than U.S.," he said. In U.S. high yield, single-B-rated debt is the most attractive, the investor said.

As we head into the early innings of earnings season, this year has been off to a shaky start. Let's discuss how traders can hedge themselves ahead of that using options. In my opinion, except for Nvidia, there are almost no notable technology companies that have seen significant growth in their revenues last year, or will see significant growth within the next 6-12 months due to AI. I believe now is the time to pull the trigger on a market hedge using the Invesco QQQ Trust as we head into what could be a turbulent earnings season. Using the QQQ ETF, which tracks the Nasdaq-100 index, I'm looking out to March and buying the $400/$370 put vertical at a $6.39 net debit.

The market's shock reaction, compounded by a lack of details of the spending push, overshadowed Sanofi's plan to list its consumer unit, in line with an industry trend. David Song, a portfolio manager and investment partner at Tema ETF, said: "The narrative of Sanofi has been a margin expansion, earnings-driven story for a lot of investors." "Shouldn't investors give credit to managements who care about long-term shareholder value creation?," said Song. Executives don't need to worry about Irrational misrepresenting their company, and participation can open them up to potential inclusion in products such as an ETF, van Adelsberg said. In total, the ETF recently held nearly 150 equities and is benchmarked to the CIBC Human Capital Index. Still, the team noted some challenges in building broader awareness of what human capital is or why it matters. "In this market, what we're seeing is that those companies who have strong human capital ratings are outperforming," van Adelsberg said. "The role that human capital plays in driving future equity performance isn't going down.

Storage tanks and gas-chilling units are seen at Freeport LNG, the second largest exporter of U.S. liquified natural gas, near Freeport, Texas, U.S., February 11, 2023. Reuters/Arathy Somasekhar/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsDec 1 (Reuters) - Investors have been piling into an exchange-traded fund (ETF) designed to track U.S. natural gas prices, in spite of the commodity's dismal performance in 2023. The U.S. Natural Gas Fund's (UNG) (UNG.P) price, tied to the performance of futures contracts on the commodity, has plunged 60.7% so far this year, falling 27% in November alone. Analysts said the drop in the ETF's price came alongside a fall in the price of natural gas sparked by milder than usual weather across the United States in recent weeks. Natural gas prices fell about 22% in November, the single largest monthly percentage drop since a 40% decline in January.

A recent uptick for a broad-based tech ETF could signal that the market is ready for a rally in software stocks, regardless of size, according to Oppenheimer. Given Oppenheimer's coverage in the former, we think it's important to flag that the equal-weighted S & P Software & Services SPDR (XSW) reclaimed its Q2 breakout above its year-long bottoming pattern. A big rally for the XSW would be a change of pace from the strength of the so-called "Magnificent Seven" tech stocks that have dominated the market in 2023. And the fund's holdings mean that investors won't be adding even more exposure to all of the Magnificent Seven. Though the fund is broad, it does not include all categories of what many investors consider to be tech stocks.
