CNN —Astronomers may have found a rare “sibling” that shares the same orbit of a Jupiter-like planet around a young star. Two Jupiter-like planets, known as PDS 70b and PDS 70c, are already known to orbit the star. Evidence for Trojans beyond our solar system — specifically Trojan planets — has been sparse until now. The signal suggested a cloud of debris with a mass of about twice that of our moon, which could be a Trojan planet or a planet in formation. A cloud of debris (circled by a yellow dotted line) may be a newly forming planet in the same orbit as the planet PDS 70b.

[1/2] An artist's composition of the Milky Way seen with a neutrino lens (blue) is shown in this undated handout image. Scientists said on Thursday they have produced an image of the Milky Way not based on electromagnetic radiation - light - but on ghostly subatomic particles called neutrinos. Neutrinos are produced by the same sources as cosmic rays, the highest-energy particles ever observed, but differ in a key respect. They released an illustration of their findings with neutrinos from the Milky Way represented by light, with a heavy concentration at the galaxy's core. "The most likely source of neutrinos and cosmic rays in our galaxy," Taboada added, "are the remains of past supernova explosions.

Huge cosmic bursts are coming from two black holes circling each other in a distant galaxy. In this case, the flare came from a binary system consisting of two black holes trapped in a rapid dance. A cosmic burst 100 times brighter than our galaxyThe recorded burst, which astronomers observed in February 2022, occurred when the smaller black hole crashed into a disk of gas surrounding the larger black hole, the study's scientists said. Up to this point, its presence was only predicted through observations of its gravitational influence on the larger black hole. [1/2] Steam and smoke billow from the Ratcliffe-on-Soar coal-fired power station near Nottingham, Britain, December 1, 2017. Britain has a target to close its coal-fired power plants by October 2024 as part of efforts to cut fossil fuel emissions and meet its 2050 net-zero target. A market notice, published by the National Grid Electricity System Operator (ESO) showed it has asked for the unit to be ready on Monday afternoon. National Grid ESO did not comment on why the notification had been issued. Gas-fired power plants were providing around 41% of the country’s electricity on Monday, with wind power lower than usual, providing just 7%.

This dying red giant had only recently mysteriously dimmed its shine after an enormous explosion. It is expected to explode into a supernova visible from Earth, though likely not for thousands of years. The red giant — a star not far from death — is now shining about 50% brighter than it usually would, scientists said. Scientists are keeping a close eye on Betelgeuse, as this red giant is a dying star that is close to turning supernova. Betelgeuse could burst into a supernova visible from Earth — one dayA pre-supernova star, called a Wolf-Rayet star, 15,000 light-years away in the constellation Sagittarius.
But a black hole can also send powerful jets of material blasting across space and beyond its home galaxy. Previous observations have shown the jet and black hole separately, including the first direct image of a black hole, released in 2019. Astronomers believe that more material is falling toward the black hole in the new image, which is why the ring looks bigger. Studying black holesRecently, astronomers also used machine learning to release a cleaner, sharper version of the original M87 black hole image from 2019. The central region is darker and larger, surrounded by a bright ring as hot gas falls into the black hole.
Extraterrestrial life could exist, but mysterious objects in the sky aren't evidence of aliens. Scientists have thought they were close to discovering alien life a few times — none of it via UFOs. As the US discovered a flurry of UFOs — officially called "unidentified anomalous phenomena," or UAPs — in early February, Google searches for "extraterrestrial life" and "are aliens real" spiked. There have been incidents in the past where some researchers thought they'd come close to discovering signs of alien life — or even extraterrestrial intelligence — but none were UFOs. They dubbed the first interstellar object 'Oumuamua, which is a Hawaiian term meaning "a messenger from afar arriving first."
Companies National Grid PLC FollowLONDON, Jan 26 (Reuters) - Britain's National Grid (NG.L) asked coal-fired power plants to be warmed up as a back-up option for power generation on Thursday as cold weather was expected to push up demand. "The ESO has issued a notification that we will warm winter contingency coal units for potential use on Thursday 26 January," National Grid Electricity System Operator said on Twitter. "This notification is not confirmation that these units will be used on Thursday, but that they will be available to the ESO, if required." National Grid requested three coal-powered generators to be fired up on Sunday, but stood them down a day later as the supply picture had improved. It also activated a scheme through which it offered to pay customers to use less power.
Cold weather has returned in January, causing the U.K. power supplier to offer financial incentives for households to cut use at peak times. On Monday, three out of five back-up coal power stations were told to fire up to provide back-up supply, although the measure was reversed early Tuesday. National Grid ESO, which has overall responsibility for managing Britain's electricity supply, said the public should not worry about blackouts. The cold weather has combined with a drop in wind power — a key energy source for Britain — which frequently generates more than half of the country's electricity. Over the weekend and into this week, the wind power share has dropped below a quarter, with gas taking over as the primary source.
UK's National Grid asks for 3 coal generators to be warmed

Companies National Grid PLC FollowLONDON, Jan 22 (Reuters) - Britain's National Grid (NG.L) said on Sunday it had asked for three coal-powered generators to be warmed up in case they are needed as the country faces a snap of cold weather. "This notification is not confirmation that these units will be used on Monday, but that they will be available to the ESO (Electricity System Operator), if required," National Grid said. Coal-powered generators were last put on stand-by in December when temperatures dropped and demand for energy rose, but they were not needed on that occasion. Most galaxies are built around humongous black holes. A light year is the distance light travels in a year, 5.9 trillion miles (9.5 trillion km). They have the biggest, scariest black holes. IXPE, launched last December as a collaboration between the U.S. space agency NASA and the Italian Space Agency, measures the brightness and polarization — a property of light involving the orientation of the electromagnetic waves — of X-ray light from cosmic sources. “Black holes are unique laboratories to study fundamental physics in extreme conditions we cannot replicate on Earth,” Liodakis said.
Those are just the worlds we know about. According to NASA, on average each star has at least one planet. You can see one orbiting the star in this image. The planet is a tiny dot on the right, within the disc of material surrounding the star. A star surrounded by a circumplanetary disc, with a planet visible on the right, captured by the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array.
A new picture shows a nebula 2,500 light-years away in spectacular detail. The Cone Nebula was snapped by the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope. An annotated picture shows the nebula on a wide field picture of the sky. At about 2,500 light-years from Earth, the Cone Nebula is relatively close to us, which makes it easy to observe. The Cone Nebula can be found at the tip of the Monoceros (unicorn) constellation ESOThe unicorn constellation is visible in the winter sky from the Northern Hemisphere.
Oct 31 (Reuters) - The aftermath of a large star's explosive death is seen in an image released on Monday by the European Southern Observatory, showing immense filaments of brightly shining gas that was blasted into space during the supernova. A light year is the distance light travels in a year, 5.9 trillion miles (9.5 trillion km). The image shows the supernova remnants about 11,000 years after the explosion, Leibundgut said. The beauty of such images is that we can directly see what material was inside a star," Leibundgut added. The star itself has been reduced in the aftermath of the supernova to an incredibly dense spinning object called a pulsar.
