Bitcoin is just getting started after its postelection rally, according to Fundstrat's Tom Lee, and is still on track to hit six figures by the end of the year. "I think because [it's] post-halving and now bitcoin is becoming a lot more relevant ... the regulatory overhang is diminishing — that there's a lot of upside from here." The flagship cryptocurrency climbed to fresh records this week after President-elect Donald Trump' s victory, which was widely anticipated as a bullish catalyst for the crypto industry at large. During Trump's campaign for reelection he promised the crypto industry a more favorable regulatory environment that would include appointing a more crypto-friendly leader to chair the Securities and Exchange Commission. Bitcoin is up 79% this year, compared with the S & P 500's 25% gain.

Trump defeated Democratic candidate Vice President Kamala Harris, and Republicans claimed a majority of the Senate in elections this week. "We know kind of where the world is headed in a Trump environment because we've seen it before," said Jeffrey Solomon, president of TD Cowen, on CNBC's "Money Movers" Wednesday. One M&A advisor, who also spoke to CNBC anonymously, noted that Trump's disdain for Big Tech companies — historically active deal-makers — might keep them on the sidelines. Apparent GOP opposition to the CHIPS Act means that semiconductor consolidation might be challenging, the advisor noted, while cautioning it is still too early to know what a Trump presidency would mean. That advisor noted that smaller banks had been getting gobbled up for "some time," but that the pace and size of those acquisitions would likely ramp up under a Trump presidency.

The Federal Reserve cut interest rates by 25 basis points on Thursday. AdvertisementAnother interest-rate cut is headed Americans' way. On Thursday, the Federal Open Market Committee announced a 25-basis-point interest-rate cut after a 50-basis-point cut in September. AdvertisementGiven the lag in monetary policy, the interest-rate cuts won't give Americans immediate relief on their credit cards, housing, or car loans. Still, some Democratic lawmakers urged the Fed to implement another 50-basis-point cut to give Americans more financial relief.

AdvertisementDonald Trump's presidential victory and his promise of light regulation could help relieve one of Citi's biggest problems. Wells Fargo analyst Mike Mayo called Trump's win a "regulatory game changer" in a research note. For instance, the OCC has required Citi to submit plans each quarter to ensure they are allocating enough resources to the Transformation effort. It's the dawn of a new day for the crypto industry with Donald Trump now the president-elect of the United States, said Galaxy Digital's Michael Novogratz, calling out the numerous crypto advocates that have advised him. "We've got a Congress that is moving our way, we've got a president that's moving our way, and so for Galaxy and the crypto industry, that couldn't be more optimistic," he said on CNBC's "Squawk Box" Wednesday morning. "Those three positions, with someone who's open minded to crypto … changes everything," he said. And all of a sudden we'll start seeing decentralized systems launched and work so this is really a step change." The shift won't happen overnight, Novogratz warned, but as Trump starts to appoint people into various positions of leadership there will be "a substantial shift in the energy of this industry."

Former President Donald Trump arrives for his campaign rally at the Trump National Doral Golf Club in Doral, Florida, on July 9, 2024. Getting that money required him to make big promises pertaining to the crypto industry. "For too long our government has violated the cardinal rule that every bitcoiner knows by heart: Never sell your bitcoin," Trump said during his keynote speech. Trump pledged to maintain the current level of bitcoin holdings that the U.S. has amassed from seizing assets from financial criminals. "On day one, I will fire Gary Gensler," Trump said, referencing the Joe Biden-appointed SEC chairman who has taken an aggressive approach to crypto regulation.

Cryptocurrencies were slightly higher as investors looked forward to results from the U.S. presidential election. Republican nominee for U.S. Senate Bernie Moreno addresses supporters at Brecksville Community Center on November 4, 2024 in Brecksville, Ohio. He voted against pro-crypto legislation, called for more regulation of the sector, and regularly posted anti-crypto rhetoric on social media. According to the tracker, 224 pro-crypto candidates have been elected to the House, against 106 anti-crypto House candidates that have won. In the Senate, 14 pro-crypto candidates have been elected, while nine anti-crypto candidates have been victorious. A new federal rule will prohibit schools from charging transaction fees to low-income students when their families electronically deposit funds into their lunch accounts. The report estimated that school meal payment processors collect more than $100 million in transaction fees a year. “The policy announced today will ensure fairness for all students receiving meals at a reduced price, even when paying online,” USDA said in a statement Friday. "USDA should keep working hard on this issue so that families aren’t squeezed for every nickel and dime." Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, who has advocated for free school meals for all children, called the ban on transaction fees for some families a “major” step.

“Too frequently, large grocery companies use their significant market power to hike prices for essential goods and take advantage of customers,” the letter said. Grocery prices shot up 20% between January 2021 and December 2022, causing some consumers to cut back on common purchases like red meat and eggs. But inflation is now virtually back to normal; since November 2023, grocery prices have been increasing by less than 2% on an annual basis. The companies say the tags let employees change prices up to every 10 seconds, allowing them to streamline operations and restock faster. Kroger has denied that claim, saying electronic pricing would only be used to lower prices whenever possible.

In states where tensions have long boiled over reproductive rights, family planning experts say women face mounting barriers to getting birth control. In June, Senate Republicans blocked a bill that would have enshrined a national right to birth control into law. States have been left to decide if they will protect access to birth control. The Right Time initiative is part of Michelle Trupiano's work at Missouri Family Health Council that reduces costs and helps Missourians to obtain birth control. She works at a family planning clinic that is benefiting from Title X funding, which means right now, uninsured patients can get birth control through the clinic.

With Republicans favored to win the Senate, Harris may have few opportunities to pursue an ambitious legislative agenda, shifting the Democratic ideological fight to key personnel decisions. “It’d be a strategic blunder for Harris to pick an ugly fight over Lina Khan’s future when there’s already strong consensus among Democrats. Moderate senators like Bob Casey and Jackie Rosen are actively campaigning on the FTC’s work to lower prices,” said a Senate Democratic aide, who was granted anonymity to discuss a sensitive subject. Removing her would not only infuriate the left but it could provoke a confirmation fight with Senate Republicans over her replacement. Some in the progressive movement believe Harris should simply leave her there without going through confirmation again in the Senate if need be.

As Wall Street financiers snapped up huge swaths of the nation’s rental housing market in recent years, the deals sailed through unchallenged. But large purchases of rental homes and apartment buildings by private equity firms like KKR are another cause, research shows. The Private Equity Stakeholder Project, a nonprofit that monitors the industry’s impact on individual Americans, has identified more than 5,100 apartment complexes owned by more than 30 private equity companies in America, totaling almost 1.4 million units. Jim Baker, executive director at the Private Equity Stakeholder Project, welcomes the scrutiny the senators are bringing to the KKR transaction. More than two-thirds of the apartment units in those states are owned by private equity, he said.

Three Democratic senators are asking McDonald’s about its menu price hikes in recent years, arguing that the increases are higher than they should be — even with inflation and rising operating costs. McDonald’s prices have raised eyebrows. It also asked whether McDonald’s executives received bonuses or other incentive-based compensation from 2020 to 2024 and whether any incentives were based on executives’ ability to increase per-customer profits. The Education Department said student-loan company MOHELA failed to process borrower applications for income-driven repayment plans. According to a document from the Education Department reviewed by Business Insider, MOHELA has failed to process over 460,000 applications for borrowers on income-driven repayment plans, preventing those borrowers from accessing more affordable monthly payments. "Federal Student Aid has determined, through its oversight of federal student loan servicers, that MOHELA has not consistently met the Department's standards for serving borrowers. In total, Larsen has given around $1.9 million to support Harris' campaign directly and through PACs, according to FEC data compiled by crypto market and blockchain analyst James Delmore and independently verified by CNBC. Nearly half of all the corporate money flowing into the election has come from the crypto industry, according to a recent report from the nonprofit watchdog group Public Citizen. "What we've had to date has been almost like purposeful chaos by Gensler to kind of crush the domestic industry," Larsen said. Horowitz said that he and his wife, Felicia, "have known Vice President Harris for over 10 years and she has been a great friend to both of us during that time." PepsiCo is selling bigger packs of chips to win over inflation-weary shoppers. It's the latest sign that shoppers are getting some relief after years of rising food prices. PepsiCo is adding more chips in packs without raising prices, company executives said during an earnings call on Tuesday. PepsiCo is also adding two or three extra bags of chips to variety packs, which typically contain around a dozen small bags of chips, he said. Executives at PepsiCo, one of the world's largest snack and beverage makers, had indicated in July that relief from higher snack prices was on the way.
