Boeing is back in the headlines for all the wrong reasons again after the Alaska Airlines 737 Max 9 incident. Boeing workers participating in a "Quality Stand Down" at Boeing's 737 Max factory in Renton, Washington on January 25, 2024. One of the first Boeing 737 Max jets on the production line at the company's manufacturing facility in Renton, Washington, U.S., on Monday, Dec. 7, 2015. The airlines around the world that have already bought Boeing planes basically need to keep using those models, whatever the problems. Commercial pilots are certified on specific models and are not able to easily move from single-aisle to widebody versions of Boeing jets, let alone between a Boeing and an Airbus jet.

The Boeing Co. logo is displayed outside of company offices near Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) in El Segundo, California on January 18, 2024. Boeing confirmed late on Monday it is withdrawing a request it made to the Federal Aviation Administration last year seeking an exemption from a safety standard for its 737 Max 7 that is awaiting certification. Senator Tammy Duckworth, who chairs an aviation subcommittee, said last week she opposed Boeing's exemption request that would "prematurely allow the 737 Max 7 to enter commercial service." She noted the exemption Boeing had sought "involves an anti-ice system that can overheat and cause the engine nacelle to break apart and fall off. The FAA deferred comment to Boeing.

SEATTLE (AP) — Facing severe criticism after a door plug blew out on a 737 Max over Oregon this month, Boeing said Monday that it is withdrawing a request for a safety exemption needed to certify a new model of the plane. Maria Cantwell, chair of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, and Tammy Duckworth, chair of its aviation safety subcommittee, urged the Federal Aviation Administration to deny the request. "I hope this means they can quickly develop a compliant design across other MAX planes.”The FAA grounded all Max 9s in the U.S. the day after the blowout. The 737 Max went into service in May 2017. Boeing Commercial Airplanes president and CEO Stan Deal said in a message to Boeing employees Friday that the company’s most immediate goal is to help airlines restore operations.

CNN —American Airlines said it is reviewing a video posted on TikTok that shows a baggage handler releasing a passenger’s wheelchair to slide down a jet bridge chute, where it crashed into a metal barrier, flipped over and tumbled onto an airport tarmac. In the video, as the first man lets the wheelchair go, a second baggage handler, who is on the ground at the other end of the chute and wearing an American Airlines vest, steps back. American Airlines said in a statement, “We recognize how important it is to support the independence of customers with disabilities by ensuring the proper care of mobility devices throughout their journey with us. In 2022, American Airlines’ rate of damaging, delaying or losing wheelchairs and scooters was 2.00 per 100, DOT statistics show. It also calls on the agency to study whether it is possible for passengers to use wheelchairs in the main cabin.

Confident New Zealand ready for business end of World Cup

"We know that if we play the way we want to play, we'll come out on the right side of the draw. "Throughout the World Cup, the bowling attacks that have done well have passed the baton to the next bowler," Ferguson added. "We probably haven't had as much as we'd have liked over the whole World Cup but it was nice to see Boulty and Tim get some early wickets." New Zealand have reached the final of the last two World Cups and beat India to reach the title-decider in 2019, Ferguson's breakout tournament. Ferguson was confident he would be fit to play a role against the hosts if, as is likely, New Zealand's place in the semi-finals for the fourth straight World Cup is confirmed.

“Americans should be able to file their taxes without fear that their sensitive data will be shared with Big Tech companies,” said the letters, copies of which were obtained by CNN. The letters — led by Massachusetts Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren — focus on the use of tracking technology developed by tech platforms and embedded within the tax prep companies’ websites that quietly transferred users’ personal information to Meta and Google, allegedly without their consent. Of the five tax prep companies, Intuit was not a major focus of the initial congressional probe because it did not use tracking pixels to the same extent as the others, the investigation found. They also asked the same question of each of the four other tax prep companies, as well as requesting a commitment to abide by the FTC’s warning not to use customer data in ways consumers did not expressly approve. The lawmakers requested that the tax prep firms respond by Nov. 8.

In the book, author Walter Isaacson wrote that a Ukrainian drone submarine attack on Russian warships was disrupted by a disconnect from Starlink, ordered by Musk. Excerpts from the book raised alarm bells in Washington, among NATO allies and in the Ukrainian capital. Musk also argued, as he has in the past, that Ukraine should strike a "truce" with Russia. Musk's "peace plan" argument was shouted down by Ukraine officials, politicians and Putin experts. Earlier in the week, Sen. Warren called for a Congressional probe of Musk and SpaceX.

You often learn more about your enemies in the first 24 hours of a conflict than you do from years of studying them. At the outset of the war, Russia had one of the largest militaries in the world, and it was widely assumed Russia would march through Ukraine and take Kyiv in a matter of weeks, if not days. The limitations of Russian military hardware, training and discipline became evident quickly — as well as the strength of Ukrainian resolve. Still, from the earliest days of the conflict, we both saw that military aid from the United States would be critical for Ukraine to win this war. And we have to do that while analyzing where new capabilities, like modern fighter jets, can give Ukraine the edge.

Investors, worried about the economic atmosphere and the recent regional banking collapse, breathed a sigh of relief at the results. Jamie Dimon, head of JPMorgan Chase, commented on the bank’s Friday earnings call that non-bank financial rivals were “dancing in the streets” as regulators get ready to increase bank capital requirements. “This is great news for hedge funds, private equity, private credit, Apollo, Blackstone,” Dimon said of the proposed regulations. The change, they say, will increase the financial system’s resilience following the failures of three regional banks earlier this year. “The capital in the industry is sufficient,” said Bank of America CEO Brian Moynihan on his company’s earnings call Tuesday morning.

Sen. Kyrsten Sinema made a last-minute push in June to change training requirements for pilots. At the same time, she received over $100,000 from the airline industry over the last three months. But for the airline industry that's been pushing for that reduction, it was a sign that they had Sinema's ear. Political action committees and airline executives gave over $100,000 to Sinema's campaign from April to June, according to recently-filed documents with the Federal Election Commission. Altogether, the money accounts for over a tenth of contributions to Sinema's main campaign account over the last 3 months.

Travelers' displeasure with cramped airplane seating has been rising as planes pack in more seats. The bill urges the FAA to consider factors like disability or age when writing evacuation guidelines. A new bill moving through Congress aims to address airplane safety for people with disabilities or other restrictions that might make evacuating difficult. Now, Congress is trying to address the potential safety hazards with the Emergency Vacating of Aircraft Cabin, or EVAC, Act. The bill also says the tests were conducted in small groups instead of considering that some planes can carry over 200 passengers.

Some of the tax-prep companies still do not know whether the data they shared continues to be held by the tech platforms, the report said. The Warren aide told CNN it was unclear whether Meta knew it was inappropriately using taxpayer data at the time. The investigation found that all three tax-prep companies had discontinued their use of Meta’s pixel after The Markup’s report last November. “The scope of ‘taxpayer information’ is broad by design,” Rosenthal said, adding that tax-prep companies can be sued for “knowingly” or “recklessly” leaking that information. Depending on the strength of the allegations, the tax-prep companies could quickly be forced into a binding settlement, said a former FTC official who requested anonymity in order to speak more freely.

A group of lawmakers led by Massachusetts Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren are calling on the Biden administration to investigate how tax prep software companies may have illegally shared customer data with tech platforms Google and Meta . Some statements the tax prep companies provided to the publications at the time seemed to indicate the data sharing was done accidentally. Our system is designed to filter out potentially sensitive data it is able to detect." Among their findings released Wednesday, the lawmakers said that millions of taxpayers' information had been shared with Big Tech firms through the tax prep software and that both the tax prep companies and tech firms were "reckless" in how they handled sensitive information. Although Meta and Google both said they have filters to catch sensitive data that's inadvertently collected, they seemed to be "ineffective," the lawmakers wrote.

Finding it and nurturing it remain entirely consistent with the mission of higher education and, indeed, vital to our democracy. More than in any other setting, students who are raised in homogenous neighborhoods and schools first encounter difference — class, racial, ethnic and religious — in college. We should remember that these sorts of learning opportunities are relatively new in the history of higher education. For hundreds of years, many universities that today proudly champion a diverse society promoted and perpetuated class, racial and gender hierarchies. Like Bard College, schools could create early college programs, which allow high school students to take and earn college credits.

"Sisu" is a concept and way of living that has been interwoven into Finnish culture for more than 500 years. It's about having the grit to push forward in the face of adversity and near-impossible odds. As a psychology expert, I've devoted my career to teaching people how to incorporate sisu into their lives. President Joe Biden and every living former U.S. president except Donald Trump are direct descendants of slaveholders: Jimmy Carter, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama. Governors of 11 of the 50 U.S. states in 2022 were descendants of slaveholders, as were two U.S. Supreme Court justices. The Congressional slaveholding ancestors were among the richest in America before the Civil War; three-quarters were among the richest 10%. In researching America’s political elite, Reuters found names of more than 700 people enslaved by ancestors of the leaders.

Donald Trump is reportedly the only living US president whose ancestors did not own slaves. That's because Trump's ancestors came to America after slavery had already been abolished. Even Barack Obama — the country's first Black president — is the descendant of a slaveowner on his white mother's side of the family. According to Reuters, the slaveholding ancestors of living US presidents include:Joe Biden — One direct ancestor, five generations removed, owned one slaveBarack Obama — One director ancestor, six generations removed, owned two slavesGeorge Bush — One director ancestor, six generations removed, owned 25 slavesBill Clinton — One director ancestor, five generations removed, owned one slavesJimmy Carter — One director ancestor, four generations removed, owned 54 slavesBut Trump stands out among the bunch. While other presidents have deep ancestral roots in America, Trump's ancestors did not immigrate to the United States until after slavery was abolished in 1865.
