On Tuesday, Trump’s transition team signed an agreement with the White House after months of postponing the traditional transition process – a delay that Biden officials warned could undermine an orderly transfer of power and pose national security risks. In a statement announcing the agreement, the Trump transition said it will use its own security and information systems, its own office spaces and maintain its own ethics plan. Over 18,000 people have registered online to run for Supreme Court seats and federal judgeships in Mexico’s contentious new selection process, officials said Monday. The ruling party pushed through a constitutional reform in September to make all federal judges stand for election, replacing the system where court employees and lawyers mainly move up through the ranks. Now, candidates for Supreme Court seats and federal judgeships need only a law degree, a grade point average of 3.2, “five years of professional experience” and five letters of recommendation from neighbors or friends. According to the plan, evaluation committees will have just over a month to review thousands of resumes and whittle the field to about 10 candidates or less for each of the 881 judgeships and nine seats on the Supreme Court. The latest tariff proposal from President-elect Donald Trump would likely put upward pressure on inflation in the United States, according to Goldman Sachs. The core PCE, which strips out food and energy prices, is the preferred inflation reading of the Federal Reserve. A tariff-linked increase in core PCE could scramble the calculations around Fed rate cuts. To be sure, it remains to be seen whether the tariffs will actually be implemented at the levels Trump proposed — or what exceptions might be made. The unprecedented policy required migrants to stay in Mexico for the duration of their immigration proceedings in the United States. On the campaign trail, he frequently pledged to use tariffs as a negotiating tool to bend China and North American countries’ policies to his will. His advisers have acknowledged privately that tariffs could be more urgently slapped on Canada and Mexico, as Trump seeks to fulfill his campaign pledge to renegotiate his own free trade agreement. But Lutnick added that Trump wouldn’t seek to slap price-raising tariffs on goods that aren’t made in the United States.

Millions of Americans with obesity would be eligible to have popular weight-loss drugs like Wegovy or Ozempic covered by Medicare or Medicaid under a new rule the Biden administration proposed Tuesday morning. Some people may already get coverage of the drugs through Medicare or Medicaid if they have diabetes or are at risk for stroke or heart disease. Becerra estimated that an additional 3.5 million people on Medicare and 4 million on Medicaid could qualify for coverage of the drugs. But research suggests far more people might qualify, with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services estimating roughly 28 million people on Medicaid are considered obese. In speeches and on social media, he's said the U.S. should not cover the drugs through Medicaid or Medicare.

Amgen on Tuesday said its experimental weight loss injection helped patients with obesity lose up to 20% of their weight on average after a year in a critical mid-stage trial, as the company races to join the booming obesity drug market. The drug, MariTide, also helped patients with obesity and Type 2 diabetes lose up to 17% of their weight after a year. The company said it did not observe a plateau in either group of patients, which indicates the potential for further weight loss beyond 52 weeks. That could boost Amgen's odds of winning a slice of the weight loss drug market, which some analysts forecast could be worth $150 billion a year by the early 2030s. That's unlike Eli Lilly's obesity drug, Zepbound, which activates both GIP and GLP-1.

A key challenge for all of the Trump administration’s new public health leaders, the experts said, will be keeping politics out of science. CNN has reached out to Nesheiwat and Makary for comment and did not receive a response. Some said that could put them at odds with Kennedy, whom Trump has chosen for the nation’s top health post as HHS secretary.
