What Is It About Montecito?
  + stars: | 2023-07-30 | by ( Amy Larocca | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
Montecito is where Gwyneth Paltrow goes when the pressures of Brentwood are too much. Jennifer Aniston bought a $16.5 million property from Ms. Winfrey, who had not had time to use it. But it’s not just the famous who come to Montecito, it’s also the straight-up rich. Montecito is loaded with the less-recognizable names behind very recognizable things, including Ty Warner, the press-shy inventor of Beanie Babies, who lives in a rose-colored mansion with views of the whole landscape. It’s a dizzying combination of old wealth, new wealth and outrageous physical beauty that has begun to attract an ever-wider range of dreamers.

Seven automakers plan to build an electric-vehicle charging network to take on Tesla. Seven car companies are making their own charging network to take on Elon Musk's Tesla Superchargers. Tesla, by comparison, has spent over a decade building out a vast network of charging stations specifically for its owners. And that network, which historically only allowed Tesla owners to plug in, has been a huge driver of Tesla sales. It sounds like the planned charging network aims to mimic some of the things Tesla got right, and add some extra conveniences.

Austin, Texas has become one of the least affordable cities in the US in part due to steep housing costs. This week, city lawmakers took a significant step toward helping boost housing supply. The city council approved a resolution that reduces the lot size necessary for a home. Research has found that increasing the market-rate housing supply makes housing more affordable for both middle- and low-income residents, despite widespread skepticism that the laws of supply and demand apply to housing. Last year, a Texas appeals court struck down a previous city council effort to increase housing density through upzoning.

Dealers lose in the race to get an electric truck in consumers' driveways. Dealers have more to lose than manufacturers, who book revenue once the truck leaves the factory. In an electric truck market where buyers are placing bets on what will arrive first, dealers are likely to be the ones left in the lurch. Listening to dealers about where the demand pendulum is swinging will be crucial for car companies as they roll out more and more electric models in the coming years. Car companies that use dealers book revenue on a car once it leaves the factory (that's one of the biggest advantages legacy car companies have over startups that use a direct-to-consumer model).

The growth could put data centers in competition with local populations for space and resources. As my colleague Dan Geiger reports today in an excellent story on a data center development boom, the AI explosion has triggered a surge in investment in these warehouse-like complexes. For example, DataBank, a data center provider backed by investment firm DigitalBridge, is putting smaller data centers in the suburbs of "tier two and tier three cities," CEO Marc Ganzi told my colleague Ellen Thomas. Unlike e-commerce warehouses, these data centers don't add a bunch of traffic to the roads, and they're pretty quiet. As a result of limited generation capacity in places like Arizona and northern Virginia, these data centers are popping up anywhere where the local utilities can support them.

This means agencies creating the wildland-urban interface or WUI — where human settlements meet the natural environment — are not ultimately responsible for protecting it. By my fifth year in firefighting, I’d seen plenty of wildfires and structure fires, and wildfires threatening structures. As we convoyed in, a battalion chief instructed each engine company, “If it’s not savable, leapfrog to the next house. Smoke rises from the Texas Creek wildfire south of Lillooet, British Columbia, Canada, on July 9. In this banner year, some are crying for Canada to form a national fire department.

LANSING, Mich. – General Motors on Monday revealed a redesigned version of its popular Chevrolet Traverse crossover with a more truck-like appearance that the company hopes will attract new buyers. The 2024 Chevy Traverse's exterior features a more sculptured design than the smoother outgoing model. Through the first half of this year, the larger crossover trailed only the automaker's full-size pickups, Chevy Malibu sedan and smaller Chevrolet Equinox crossover in sales. "Our new Traverse is designed and engineered to act and look more like an SUV," said Chevrolet Vice President Scott Bell in a release. "Led by the all-new Z71, the 2024 Traverse builds on the success of its predecessor and will undoubtedly enable us to be in more customer driveways."

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has a learning curve ahead of him later this year when the Cybertruck finally hits customers' driveways. Musk is making further moves to thrust Tesla into the mainstream by entering the US market's lucrative pickup truck market. It's also a tough time to release any new product, especially an electric pickup truck. While Cybertruck is poised to go after a more unique set of pickup truck buyers, the company could face more trouble than it's used to converting existing truck buyers to the brand. "The nature of trucks is to work within this network of aftermarket companies out there – it will be interesting to see if Elon plays along."

Why cities want to ban new drive-thrus

Magnets of traffic and congestion, drive-thrus discourage walking, public transit use and visits to neighboring businesses. A host of cities and regions want the sprawl to stop: Atlanta lawmakers will vote this summer on whether to ban new drive-thrus in the popular Beltline area. Minneapolis; Fair Haven, New Jersey; Creve Coeur, Missouri; Orchard Park, New York, and other cities have banned new drive-thrus in recent years. Experts say pedestrian safety can be improved by tightly managing access along arterial roads and locating drive-thrus away from them. Cities push backAtlanta City Councilman Jason Dozier proposed a bill this year to block new drive-thrus around the Atlanta Beltline, a pedestrian trail along a 22-mile railroad corridor.

We used a professional device called a sound level meter to record the decibel levels of common sounds and environments. According to the World Health Organization, average road traffic noise above 53 dB or average aircraft noise exposure above about 45 dB are associated with adverse health effects. This chart shows how many people in the United States may be exposed to various outdoor noise levels, on average. Scientists believe that pronounced fluctuations in noise levels like this might compound the effects on the body. Nighttime noise shows similar inequities.

The guilty verdicts on Thursday against four leaders of the Proud Boys on charges of seditious conspiracy were arguably the most significant victory the Justice Department has won so far in its vast investigation of the attack on the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. Prosecutors took a victory lap, with Attorney General Merrick B. Garland noting that along with the similar convictions of six members of another extremist group — the Oath Keepers militia — a major blow had been struck against two of the country’s most prominent far-right organizations. And yet on April 23 — one day before closing arguments took place at the Proud Boys trial — fliers blaming Jews for “the rise in transgenderism” were found in the driveways of several homes in suburban Atlanta. One week later, as the Proud Boys case went to the jury, a neo-Nazi group flying a swastika flag protested a drag show in Columbus, Ohio. The incidents were just two of the many such episodes in recent weeks.

The Big Apple wants to go green. First it needs to figure out where to put thousands of chargers needed for electric vehicles as the state phases out the sale of new gasoline-powered cars and trucks by 2035. Drivers in New York largely rely on street parking and lack homes with driveways or garages where they could install private chargers. As a result, it will need thousands of additional public charging locations to spur wider EV adoption. So far, fewer than 1% of vehicles registered in the city are electric, according to state data.

1,920 Ford dealers have signed on for a controversial EV sales program. They say the EV sales requirements set by Ford violate franchise laws with illegal pricing requirements and unlawful allocation systems. There are two tiers to the EV sales program: Certified Elite and Certified. In the elite track, dealers are required to invest up to $1.2 million in facility upgrades and training for staff. On the certified track, the investment requirement is lower – $500,000 – but caps allotted EV sales at the dealership to 25 per year.

Front cameras could help prevent these deaths, safety experts say. On Monday, he announced legislation that would make front blind zone safety features mandatory for motor vehicles. After Congress passed a law to improve rear blind zone safety nearly 15 years ago, it took a decade — rulemaking, regulatory delays and a multiyear rollout — before it fully went into effect. Blumenthal’s bill directs regulators to determine what technology, such as cameras or sensors, to require to make front blind zones safer, much like the rear blind zone law did. But she believes the best way to prevent future tragedies is widespread use of blind zone cameras.
