CNN —Intel Monday announced CEO Pat Gelsinger has resigned after a difficult stint at the company. The once-dominant chipmaker’s stock cratered as it missed the AI boom and was surpassed by most of its rivals. Gelsinger took over as Intel’s chief executive in February 2021, returning to the company at which he had spent decades of work, including as chief technology officer. He had left Intel for a stint as CEO of software giant VMWare. At Intel, Gelsinger was tasked with turning around the iconic American tech giant that was struggling against unprecedented competition, production delays and the departure of top talent.

The Biden administration expanded its efforts to lock in its climate policies on Monday, saying that it would lend almost $7 billion to help build battery factories in Indiana to supply vehicles made by Stellantis, the owner of Jeep, Chrysler, Dodge and Ram. The financing, which was the second multibillion-dollar loan related to electric-vehicle manufacturing in a week, is part of the administration’s efforts to create domestic supplies of batteries. President-elect Donald J. Trump has vowed to reverse Biden administration policies aimed at promoting electric-vehicle manufacturing. Last week, the Department of Energy said it would lend $6 billion to help Rivian build an electric-car factory in Georgia. Rivian, a relatively new company that makes only electric vehicles, plans to produce sport utility vehicles and hatchbacks at the factory, in Social Circle, near Atlanta.

China is closely monitoring the effects of Western sanctions on Russia in order to prepare for a possible invasion of Taiwan, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter. CNN —Instead of lounging on the couch after Thanksgiving, Americans headed to movie theaters, as the premiere of Disney’s “Moana 2” and the draw of “Wicked” and “Gladiator II” provided a big boost to the domestic box office. The success of the three films brought a new perspective on where the box office year can wind up, he said, since no one expected this to be a $420 million Thanksgiving weekend. Reviving the moviegoing experienceLoria said Universal, Paramount and Disney focused on theatrical-driven marketing campaigns, which movie theater companies could lean into. It meant movie theaters stepped up to cater to three very different audiences: those looking for epic historical action, musical fantasy and animated adventure. Dergarabedian said the theater screen goes hand-in-hand with streaming services at home and can build up the success of a movie long-term.

It was all feast and no famine at the Thanksgiving box office this year. "Moana 2" led the frame with $221 million for the five-day period, a significant overperformance compared to the $100 million box office analysts had initially expected. It is now the highest-grossing Broadway adaptation of all time at the domestic box office. This year's overperformance at the box office during the Thanksgiving period has also helped narrow the gap between 2024 and 2023's hauls. Heading into this holiday period, the 2024 box office was down 11% compared to the previous year's numbers.

The train will pass through 20 provinces and cities, with 23 passenger stations and five freight stations along the way. It will transport both people and goods and will also service defense purposes, state media said. State media said that Vietnam will prioritize domestic funding for the project but may consider foreign loans if they are affordable and not restrictive.

Volkswagen workers prepare to strike across Germany

London CNN —Tens of thousands of Volkswagen workers will participate Monday in strikes at plants across Germany, labor union IG Metall said, marking the largest walkouts at the carmaker’s domestic operations since 2018. “If necessary, this will become the toughest wage dispute Volkswagen has ever seen,” IG Metall’s chief negotiator Thorsten Groeger said in a statement Sunday. The walkouts will be the first large-scale strikes that Volkswagen has faced since 2018, according to IG Metall, when 50,000 workers idled plants over pay. Indefinite strikes could also be called as a last resort, but only after members have been consulted again, IG Metall said. Volkswagen has said it may need to close plants in Germany for the first time in its 87-year history.

The country of 3.7 million people has seen months of rising tension between the ruling Georgian Dream party and opponents who accuse it of pursuing increasingly authoritarian, anti-Western and pro-Russian policies. Opposition TV channel Formula showed footage of people in Khashuri, a town of 20,000 in central Georgia, throwing eggs at the local Georgian Dream office and tearing down the party’s flag. Georgian Dream says it is acting to defend the country’s sovereignty against outside interference. Georgia’s foreign ministry said in a statement that foreign states were trying to “interfere in the functioning of the institutions of a sovereign state”, and that this was unacceptable. But domestic opponents and Western governments have become increasingly concerned that Georgian Dream is intent – despite its denials – on abandoning that course.

Economists broadly dislike tariffs, saying they tend to increase prices for consumers — a likelihood that many company executives are already warning of. The new slate of tariffs Trump calls for would be much steeper and more far-reaching if fully implemented. “In his first term, President Trump instituted tariffs against China that created jobs, spurred investment and resulted in no inflation,” Trump transition spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said in a statement. The domestic box office is poised for its biggest Thanksgiving haul since the pandemic thanks to a Polynesian princess, a pair of witches and a revenge-fueled gladiator. Disney’s “Moana 2” hit theaters Wednesday and is expected to generate between $120 million and $150 million in box office receipts in the U.S. and Canada through Sunday. The second-highest haul for the holiday period was the $294.2 million secured during the same five-day period in 2013. After ruling the Thanksgiving box office for years with titles from Pixar and Disney Animation, it’s failed to live up to expectations with its recent string of releases.
