This is the opening scene from “The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert”, which first screened at Cannes Film Festival 30 years ago this month. In the film, Tick (Hugo Weaving) and Bernadette (Terence Stamp) help Adam (Guy Pearce) realize his dream of climbing King Canyon in full drag. “I think that’s definitely one of the most iconic looks,” drag artist and costumer Philmah Bocks told CNN. Bocks has been designing costumes for 30 years, having broken into the drag scene around the same time “Priscilla” was hitting screens. The film’s legacy can also be seen in Australia’s drag scene today and, since 2021, has been broadcast to new audiences via contestants on “Rupaul’s Drag Race Down Under”.

Eric Schmidt backed out of buying the Alfa Nero megayacht last year. The ship — one of the biggest yachts owned by a tech billionaire —was listed for about $161 million. But as the sale proceedings went on, legal challenges piled up as people laid claim to Alfa Nero, and Schmidt backed out of the deal. In September 2023, just three months after he won the Alfa Nero auction, the billionaire purchased Kismet, renaming her Whisper, Business Insider has learned.

Dua Lipa released her third studio album, "Radical Optimism," on Friday. With its Euro-pop vibe, 11-track structure, and dance-forward conceit, "Radical Optimism" does recall its predecessor, but that's hardly a bad thing. Compare that to the trio of "Radical Optimism" singles: "Houdini," "Training Season," and "Illusion," all of which have the makings of a smash. "Radical Optimism" is primed for the same kind of slow-burn success, especially given its familiar shimmer of pop genius. Final Grade: 8.6/10Dua Lipa's "Radical Optimism" was released on May 3, 2024.

Following the release of "Cowboy Carter," fans are speculating on the genre of Beyoncé's next album. AdvertisementHold your horses, Beyhive: "Act II" just came out and you're already thinking about "Act III?" Following the Friday release of "Cowboy Carter," Beyoncé's genre-bending country album, fans of the award-winning singer are speculating on what she has up her sleeve for her next album. However, Bey has shown us that she can belt a tune in Spanish, thanks to her 2007 "Irreemplazable" album — Spanish recordings of songs from her "Irreplaceable" album. A rock album would align with Beyoncé's mission to reclaim art forms created by Black musicians, and "Cowboy Carter" is chock full of rock references.

Beyoncé has gone country, sure … but it turns out that’s only the half of it. For months, the superstar, who made her name in R&B and pop, has been telegraphing her version of country music and style. At midnight on Friday, Beyoncé finally released her new album, “Cowboy Carter,” and the country bona fides were certainly there. Yet “Cowboy Carter” is far broader than simply a country album. That theory is made clear on the spoken track “Spaghettii,” featuring the pioneering but long absent Black country singer Linda Martell, who in 1970 released an album called “Color Me Country.”

U.S. equities aren't the only ones on a bull run — the Japanese stock market is also enjoying an upward climb. "It is the case that the Japanese stock market remains almost exclusively driven by foreign money," Jefferies head of global equity strategy Christopher Wood wrote in a March 7 note. According to Wood, foreign investors now own almost a third of the Japanese stock market, a dramatic rise from the 4% level in 1989, when the asset bubble reached its peak. Morgan Stanley noted that quality stocks have outperformed the broader market so far in 2024. Transitioning out of deflation Rate policy has been another big factor in the recent market rally.

When Ye and Ty Dolla Sign asked last month for permission to sample Donna Summer’s 1977 song “I Feel Love,” the disco singer’s estate firmly told them no. Yet when their joint LP, “Vultures 1,” was released weeks ago, a song with strong similarities to Summer’s famous tune was there on the track list. A copyright infringement lawsuit detailing that timeline was filed against Ye, the rapper once known as Kanye West, and Ty Dolla Sign on Tuesday by Summer’s husband and executor, Bruce Sudano. Summer, known as the “Queen of Disco,” had three consecutive double albums reach No. He has apologized in a Hebrew-language social media post.

Cat Janice, a singer and songwriter who released a buoyant pop track from hospice that galvanized her thousands of supporters online to sway, and even groove, in the face of tragedy, died on Wednesday at her family home in Annandale, Va. She was 31. The singer and multi-instrumentalist, whose legal name was Catherine Ipsan, started writing music as a teenager and released it throughout her 20s. But “Dance You Outta My Head,” which she shared on social media alongside candid discussion of her grueling cancer treatments, quickly became the biggest hit of her career. Over disco-inflected guitar and exuberant strings, she sang about “dancing on the edge of disaster.”Ms. Ipsan released the song on Jan. 19, a few days after entering hospice care. The song caught fire as her health outlook darkened, with social media users — including celebrities like Jason Derulo — leaving messages of support.

Investors have been bullish on Japan stocks since last year, repeatedly driving them to record highs. Goldman Sachs has named "Seven Samurai" stocks in Japan, which it says could be an equivalent of the United States' "Magnificent Seven." The "Magnificent Seven" comprises Apple , Amazon , Alphabet , Meta , Microsoft , Nvidia and Tesla , which were behind much of the gains that drove the S & P 500 up a whopping 24% or so in 2023. In a Feb. 18 report, Goldman answered clients' requests for the Japanese equivalent of the "Magnificent Seven." With that criteria, Goldman has come up with a list of seven stocks, and they are: Screen Holdings, Advantest, Disco, Tokyo Electron, Toyota Motor, Subaru and Mitsubishi.

Though Ozzy Osbourne left Black Sabbath in 1979, his wife, Sharon Osbourne, told Billboard any songs the band wrote — Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward — require the approval of all four members to license. Regardless of the social media feud, legal experts say if true, the unauthorized use of the samples would be a “clear-cut” case of copyright infringement. What Was The Village Voice?

THE FREAKS CAME OUT TO WRITE: The Definitive History of The Village Voice, the Radical Paper That Changed American Culture, by Tricia RomanoTricia Romano’s oral history of The Village Voice, the most important alternative weekly of the 20th century, is a well-made disco ball of a book — it’s big, discursive, ardent, intellectual and flecked with gossip. A lot of the people Romano interviewed, former Voice writers, editors, photographers, designers and cartoonists, will probably wince, at times, at the text. Humiliations are recalled; toes are trod upon; old hostilities have been kept warm, as if on little Sterno cans of pique. Founded in 1955 by a group of writers and editors that included Norman Mailer, The Voice was intended to be a newspaper for downtown, defined as below 14th Street in Manhattan. For many oddballs and lefties and malcontents out in America’s hinterlands (I was among them), finding their first copy of The Voice was more than eye-opening.
