While most people wouldn't decline a backup option in another country, the process of obtaining a secondary passport can be quite complicated — and expensive. Business Insider spoke to Judi Galst, who manages Henley & Partners' New York office, about the general steps required to get a secondary passport. AdvertisementThe specific requirements vary by country, Galst said. Countries like Spain are slow for citizenship approval, but have a relatively quick path to residence through investment, Galst said. The Caribbean has the lowest cost, and it requires a $200,000 contribution or $300,000 investment in real estate per application.

The IMF said in the report that emerging markets have seen a decline in the more volatile net portfolio inflows, but net inflows of foreign direct investment (FDI) has been more stable. At the same time, the report said that China saw net capital outflows over the 2022-2023 period, including net negative FDI inflows. Overall, global gross capital inflows declined to 4.4% of global GDP, or $4.2 trillion, in the 2022-2023 period, from 5.8 percent of global GDP, or $4.5 trillion, in 2017-2019. But the U.S. benefited strongly from the shifts, accounting for 41% of global gross inflows during the 2022-2023 period, nearly double its 23% share in 2017-2019. The U.S. share of global gross outflows also increased, to 21% from 14% during the same periods.

Young, wealthy investors don't want their parents' investments. Nearly one-third of young, wealthy investors' portfolios are in alternative assets like hedge funds, private equity, and crypto and digital assets, according to Mike Pelzar, head of investments at Bank of America Private Bank. Family offices are increasingly becoming their own private equity funds and investing in companies directly, according to a new survey. A majority (62%) of family offices made at least six direct investments last year, where they buy a stake in a private company or provide lending, according to the survey of family offices by BNY Mellon Wealth Management. "Direct investment presents exciting opportunities for family offices to leverage their unique competencies," according to the report.

Among the goals of his three-day state visit in October: securing another $1 billion in loans from China to help complete infrastructure projects. On Wednesday, when he arrived at Joint Base Andrews to begin another state visit – this time to Washington – he again found a red carpet and troops. Senior administration officials acknowledge a central factor in scheduling a state visit with Kenya was the desire to counter China’s influence and financial leverage on the African continent, which has outpaced the United States in direct investment. One of the goals of Thursday’s state visit is to demonstrate the ability of democracies – like Kenya’s – to deliver for their people. “I plan on going in February,” Biden told reporters.

Columbia cited security concerns in canceling the large event, a school official told CNN, and instead is holding smaller ones. “Canceling the traditional commencement ceremony was one of the toughest calls in a year of many tough calls,” Shafik wrote in an op-ed in the Columbia Daily Spectator, noting her top priority has been the safety of students, faculty and staff. Pro-Palestinian protesters had set up a campus encampment on April 29, when the university also called in local law enforcement. “This is not protest, this is pure hate.”The building’s takeover came a day after the UCB Divest Coalition agreed to end its campus encampment following discussions with university leadership.
