New York City is experiencing its highest level of homelessness since the Great Depression, according to the non-profit group Coalition for the Homeless. Another New York non-profit, City Harvest, says nearly 1.3 million residents are food insecure, including 1 in 4 children, in America’s most populous city. Is there anyone on this train who’s hungry?” Thomas bellows from the center of the car. But with the number of unhoused and hungry people in New York City only growing, the task often feels daunting. On Tuesday afternoon, prior to either race being called, when asked what she would do in that scenario, McBride said she would be prepared to push back on another Trump term. McBride said she didn’t want “to downplay the danger that comes with a second Trump administration” for LGBTQ people, but that hope “only makes sense in the face of hardship.”“It has always been in our community’s biggest challenges that we take our most significant steps forward,” she said after voting in Wilmington. In a second Trump administration, she said, the country could see what an advocate in Florida described to her as “a slingshot moment.”“We’re pulled backward, but the force and the pressure of being pulled backwards ultimately propels us to destinations that we’ve not yet been,” she said. Some trans people told NBC News ahead of the election that they had plans to leave their states or even the country should Trump win another term. McBride said she didn’t run to be a spokesperson for any particular community other than her constituents in Delaware.

Over the past seven decades, Puerto Rico has been governed by the pro-statehood New Progressive Party, currently in office held by Gov. This year, however, the candidate from the Puerto Rican Independence Party, a minority party that advocates for the island’s independence from the U.S., has had a breakthrough. Independence Party candidate Juan Dalmau has gained enough momentum to have a fighting chance at defeating Jenniffer Gonzalez, the candidate from the incumbent pro-statehood party, and relegating the candidate from the Popular Democratic Party, Jesús Manuel Ortiz, to third place. As a result, Congress passed the PROMESA law in 2016 to create a federally appointed fiscal oversight board to allow Puerto Rico to restructure its debt. In addition to this, Puerto Rico was hit by devastating natural disasters that include 2017’s Hurricane María and a series of earthquakes in 2020 and the pandemic.

Their clash has already drawn more ad spending than any other Senate race in history, eclipsing the $412 million spent in Georgia’s 2020 race between Jon Ossoff and David Perdue. While Moreno clings to Trump, Brown tends to avoid talking too much about national political figures from either party. “Sherrod Brown, he’s taking ads in like he’s my best friend,” the former president said Sunday during a rally at Madison Square Garden in New York. He also acknowledged the threat of ticket-splitters — and the importance of Trump having coattails long enough to carry Moreno along with him. But then-Rep. Tim Ryan, a Democrat who represented much of the area for years, lost it to Vance in the Senate race by 3 points in 2022.

CNN —The owner of two Boston-area pizza shops has been sentenced to more than eight years in prison for subjecting employees to years of violence and intimidation, according to prosecutors. In June, he was convicted on three counts of forced labor and three counts of attempted forced labor. Authorities discovered that Papantoniadis operated his pizza shops with a skeletal staff, forced workers to perform grueling shifts of 14 hours or more, often seven days a week. Papantoniadis violently choked a worker who expressed his intention to quit, causing the victim to flee in fear, investigators found. “Today’s significant sentence sends a message to employers — employees deserve to work in safety, free from harassment and abuse.”

Brown University suspended its chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine after the group led a rally protesting the university's decision not to divest its endowment from certain companies that support Israel. Chapter members were told of the suspension on Oct. 24, the group said, nearly a week after their Oct. 18 protest. Brown Divest Coalition first led a series of protests in April calling for the university’s governing board to divest. While university officials did review a student proposal outlining why the board should divest from 10 companies, it ultimately decided not to do so. The university’s governing body voted against the proposal on Oct. 8, with students organizing a protest in response on Oct. 18.

In an interview earlier this year, he ruled out the possibility of ordaining women deacons, who can carry out functions like a priest apart from saying Mass and hearing confessions. Furthermore, Catholic teaching bars women from ordination to the priesthood, a decision that Francis has maintained, although he has allowed studies of female deacons. During previous papacies the question of ordaining women was not even up for discussion. NEW DELHI, India— Living in a pollution-free environment is a fundamental right, India’s Supreme Court said Wednesday as it urged authorities to address deteriorating air quality in the north of the country. Swiss group IQAir rated Delhi the world’s most polluted city in its live rankings. The Supreme Court pulled up the governments of both states for taking “selective action” against stubble burning, saying penal provisions were not being properly implemented. Recognizing this, the court on Wednesday directed the federal government and the governments of Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and the western state of Rajasthan to submit compliance reports. In Pakistan’s most populous province of Punjab, authorities have changed school timings and suspended outdoor activities because of pollution.
