Shares of Dexcom tumbled more than 35% in extended trading Thursday after the diabetes management company reported disappointing revenue for the second quarter and offered weak guidance. The company reported net income of $143.5 million, up from the $115.9 million it reported during the same period last year. Dexcom updated its full fiscal year guidance to reflect expected revenue between $4 billion and $4.05, which is down from the $4.20 billion to $4.35 billion it forecast last quarter. "While Dexcom advanced several key strategic initiatives in the second quarter, our execution did not meet our high standards," Dexcom CEO Kevin Sayer said in the release. Futures tied to the Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced 42 points, or just over 0.1%. S&P 500 futures and Nasdaq 100 futures climbed about 0.1% each. The activity seemed to be part of a broader rotation into small caps and more cyclical areas of the market. As Abbott's organic sales growth continues to shine, the market will realize both concerns are overblown. The FreeStyle Libre itself, which had 20% organic growth in the quarter, also still has plenty of runway for further growth. Investors should focus instead on the upward revision to management's full-year outlook for both top-line organic growth and earnings. The combination of Thursday's strong results and immediate decline in share price is setting up a positive risk vs. reward setup. Within Diagnostics, a small miss in molecular was more than offset by strong results in core laboratory, point of care and rapid diagnostics.

The outlook for stocks is becoming more favorable as inflation slows and the Federal Reserve looks to cut interest rates by yearend, according to UBS. Against that backdrop, UBS thinks investors should maintain a neutral view and remain strategic in their stock allocations. Here are some of the stocks on the UBS list: One of the stocks added to the list was San Diego-based, medical device maker Dexcom . Abbott Laboratories announced Monday it received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for two new continuous glucose monitoring systems, including one for people who don't have diabetes. A continuous glucose monitor, or a CGM, is a small sensor that pokes through the skin and tracks a person's glucose levels in real time. One of Abbott's new systems, Libre Rio, is for patients with Type 2 diabetes who do not take insulin. Oftentimes, users need a valid CGM prescription to participate in these programs, so Abbott's new over-the-counter offering could be more accessible for some consumers. Abbott competitor Dexcom , which also sells CGM systems, received FDA approval for its first-ever over-the-counter CGM in March.

Goldman Sachs said the stock market performance has been driven by company specific factors rather than the macroeconomic environment, and the Wall Street firm identified a host of names that it said offer the most attractive microeconomic setups. The investment bank used a so-called " dispersion score " for each S & P 500 stock to identify "the best stock-picking opportunities going forward." It's important to note that stocks with high dispersion scores reflect a large alpha opportunity , but not necessarily in one direction or the other, meaning a stock can have outsized outperformance or underperformance. Goldman found that among the 11 S & P 500 sectors, consumer discretionary and technology groupings offer the best stock picking opportunities based on their dispersion scores, while real estate and utilities have the lowest scores, hence less chance of generating alpha. Stocks with the highest dispersion scores in the benchmark stock index are Monster Beverage , DexCom , Akamai Technologies , Centene and Align Technology , according to Goldman.

SignosFounded in 2018, Signos uses continuous glucose monitors, or CGMs, and an artificial intelligence-powered app to help people better understand their metabolisms. But Signos' CGM system is meant for average consumers, so it is not intended for diabetes management. The Signos app walked me through the process step by step, offering a one-minute video and a series of GIFs I could watch. Another activity had me try and guess what I thought my glucose levels were at different points throughout the day. After eating a meal, I would often get a "Fast Rise" notification from my Signos app, which indicates that a glucose spike is occurring.

If that happens, one source of outperformance could come from individual stocks that undergo a split, according to Bank of America. In a stock split, a company increases the number of its shares on the market. Companies usually issue a stock split to make the entry price of their shares cheaper. Woodard said stocks trading above $500 per share are most likely to issue a split, since their entry prices are more expensive than 95% of stocks in the S&P 500. Below, we've listed the 24 stocks in the S&P 500 that Bank of America also has a "Buy" rating on.
