Barra's comments come a week after she raised concerns about GM hitting its North American EV production capacity target. The entire Buick brand has targeted being fully electric by 2030, as part of GM's plans to exclusively offer consumer EVs by 2035. GM previously announced plans for four of the multibillion-dollar plants in the U.S. by 2026. Barra on Tuesday said the company would grow cell production in a "meaningful cadence." GM CFO Paul Jacobson declined to discuss potential plans to delay or cancel the automaker's future EV battery cell plants, aside from the two facilities making cells in Ohio and Tennessee.

The Detroit automaker on Tuesday reported sales of 696,086 for the second quarter, up 0.6% from a year earlier and its highest quarterly units sold since the fourth quarter of 2020. Still, EVs made up only 3.2% of its total second-quarter sales. Sales of GM's full-size pickup trucks were roughly 229,000 during the second quarter, up about 6% from a year earlier and the best quarterly sales since 2021. GM's second-quarter sales are expected to slightly outpace the overall industry. Kia, which reports sales on a monthly basis, reported a 6.5% decrease in its June sales.

Chinese carmakers accounted for 88% of the EV market in Brazil and 70% in Thailand in Q1, according to ABI Research figures. The EV markets in many of these countries are small now, but they're growing rapidly. This is because Chinese automakers are known for their ability to build electric cars for less than their foreign competitors. Australian Senator and shadow cyber-security minister James Paterson said earlier this year that Chinese EVs pose a growing cybersecurity risk. "India is still a little wary of the Chinese market," said Dylan Khoo, an analyst at ABI Research.

DETROIT – The traditional Detroit automakers – General Motors , Ford Motor and Stellantis – should exit the Chinese market "as soon as they possibly can," Bank of America's top automotive analyst said Tuesday. Murphy, who has previously asked General Motors about exiting the market, said the "D3" automakers need to focus on their core products and more profitable regions. It's a prospect that would have been unthinkable for the automakers, specifically GM, just a few years ago, but the rise of local Chinese automakers such as BYD and Geely has put growing pressure on the companies. While the Detroit automakers need to rethink the way their doing business in China, Murphy said it's slightly different for U.S. electric vehicle leader Tesla . Murphy said Tesla, like Chinese companies, has a roughly $17,000 cost advantage in EV components compared to the traditional Detroit automakers to assist it in the Chinese market, allowing it to have "more room to run."

President Joe Biden's administration on Friday finalized tighter fuel economy rules for trucks and sport utility vehicles through 2031 that are not as stringent as it first proposed, a federal agency said. Last year, NHTSA said its proposal to hike fuel economy standards through 2032 would cost the industry $14 billion in projected fines. In June 2023, Reuters first reported Stellantis and GM paid a total of $363 million in CAFE fines for failing to meet U.S. fuel economy requirements for prior model years. NHTSA said the rule will hike fuel economy to about 50.4 miles per gallon by 2031 from 29.1 mpg currently. "Those fines wouldn't have produced any environmental benefits or additional fuel economy and would've foolishly diverted automaker capital away from the massive investments required by the electric vehicle transition," Bozzella said.

Ford EV and hybrid sales surge 65% in May

DETROIT – Ford Motor's U.S. new vehicle sales rose 11.2% last month compared with May of last year, boosted by strong sales growth for all-electric and hybrid models. The Detroit automaker on Tuesday reported roughly 65% increases in sales of both hybrid and all-electric vehicles. The boost to EV sales is a conundrum for investors. The spike in hybrid sales is part of Ford's plan to double down on the technology. Ford reported total year-to-date U.S. sales through May of 877,685 units, up 5.6% compared with the same time period in 2023.

Barra, who is the longest tenured CEO outside of the company's founder, has been asked about retirement for several years. "I'm having a lot of fun, and I want to make sure we have our transformation on a good path," she said during a fireside chat at a Detroit Economic Club meeting. Barra reiterated she serves at the pleasure of the GM board and that she continues to have "fun." China was once a profit engine for GM, and its top sales market from 2010 to 2023. GM revealed several vehicles last week in China, including plug-in hybrid versions of its Buick GL8 minivan, a best-seller in China, and the Chevrolet Equinox crossover. "We think clearly that market has shifted and the landscape has shifted … with the capability of the Chinese [automakers]," Barra said. But it has had to aggressively cut prices to compete against Chinese automakers such ay BYD, Nio and others. Ford's crosstown rival General Motors, meanwhile, has reversed its "all-in" electric vehicle strategy and pledged to bring back hybrids into its North American vehicle lineup. Not to be outdone, Ford is also doubling down on hybrids, even as it cuts back on some EV investments. DETROIT – Ford Motor is delaying production of a new all-electric three row SUV, as it shifts to offer hybrid options across its entire North American lineup by 2030. The shift in EV plans is the latest for Ford and the entire automotive industry as adoption has been slower than many expected and production costs remain high. Ford last year said it would delay or cancel $12 billion in planned spending on new EVs due to the shifting market conditions as well as challenges to profitably building and selling the vehicles. In the first quarter of 2024, Ford's electric vehicle sales increased by 86% from subdued levels a year earlier. Hybrid sales for the automaker rose 42% year over year, while sales of Ford's traditional vehicles with internal combustion engines were up 2.6%.
