New York CNN —Trying to get a table at a buzzy new restaurant in New York or Los Angeles? American Express already owns Resy, a rival restaurant booking app, and gives special table access to Amex customers that are not available to other customers. But experts say that Amex’s acquisition gives the credit card company more control over velvet rope access to dinner — and who is shut out. It may help restaurants attract Amex customers with deeper wallets, said Alex Susskind, a professor of food and beverage management at Cornell University. Restaurant owners and merchants have also complained about the fees credit card companies charge businesses, and it could open a new door for fees.

Major airlines' bottom line depends on credit card companiesThe Credit Card Competition Act , which was introduced to Congress in June 2023 would require major banks to use at least one credit card payment network that isn't Mastercard or Visa — companies that control more than 80% of US credit card transactions — to introduce more competition into the credit card market. I visited a Delta Sky Club lounge at JFK Airport in NYC to see what it was like. As a Delta SkyMiles member in the Silver Medallion tier, I had access to a Sky Club lounge, an area with luxe-feeling seating, a buffet, and free WiFi. There are over 50 Delta Sky Clubs in airports across the US, all accessible with a membership or a Delta Reserve credit card. A Boeing 767 passenger aircraft of Delta airlines arrives from Dublin at JFK International Airport in New York as the Manhattan skyline looms in the background on February 7, 2024. Delta Airlines just became the latest airline to raise its checked bag fee — this time by $5 beginning Tuesday, according to the company. In a statement, the airline said the fee for both the first and second checked bag is increasing by $5 for most domestic and short-haul international routes. It will now cost travelers $35 for the first checked bag and $45 for the second checked bag. It's the first Delta baggage price increase since 2018, which the company said will help it stay on pace with rising industry costs.

Why checked bag fees are at record highs
  + stars: | 2024-03-02 | by ( Nathaniel Meyersohn | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
Checked bag fees are hitting record highs as airlines up the ante. So an airline can save $75 million in tax fees off its $1 billion revenue in domestic checked-bag fees. The introduction of bag fees was also a response to the rise of low-price carriers like Spirit in the United States and Ryanair in Europe. But airlines kept the bag fees in place and even raised them in an effort to make up for the lost revenue from change fees. Bag fees have been a political punching bag.

NEW YORK (AP) — American Express rolled out several updates to its Delta SkyMiles credit cards Thursday that will give additional benefits to users, part of efforts to soothe sore Delta Air Lines customers who have considered abandoning the airline after last year’s SkyMiles loyalty fiasco. AmEx customers get access to Delta's airport lounges and are able to transfer their Membership Rewards points to Delta, among other benefits. To give a sense of scale, Delta CEO Ed Bastion told investors in June that roughly 1% of the entire U.S. economy is spend on Delta's credit cards. So, when Delta made alterations to its SkyMiles loyalty program last year, it was largely seen by Delta customers as a watering down of its program, and it caused turbulence between the two companies. Part of those changes required Delta customers to spend large sums of money on airfare or on the Delta credit card to be given elite status on the airline.

My Family of 5 Flies for the Price of 3—Here’s How

From our home in Denver, my wife, three kids and I often travel to visit family in Florida, California, Georgia and New York. And when I travel for work as a professional credit card reviewer and consultant, I often bring a kid or two along. My path to companion pass bliss came through Southwest credit cards, such as the Southwest Rapid Rewards Priority Credit Card, but frequent flights can also get you there. As our family grew, my wife also began earning a Companion Pass, allowing the whole family to travel at a steep discount. For example, the Southwest Rapid Rewards Priority Credit Card offers 50,000 bonus points when you spend just $1,000 in the first three months.

Delta SkyMiles Platinum American Express Card Review

By Ben LuthiThe Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card offers a sign up bonus and annual benefits that could earn cardholders several free flights a year. But if you’re a loyal Delta customer and want a better experience every time you fly, the Delta SkyMiles Platinum can be a solid choice. The Delta SkyMiles Platinum has a $250 annual fee, and depending on how you use the card, it’s possible to offset that cost with rewards alone. Starting in 2024, for each $20 you spend on the card, SkyMiles Platinum cardholders will earn 1 medallion qualifying dollar, or MQD. Methodology: How we evaluated the Delta SkyMiles Platinum American Express CardTo choose Buy Side from WSJ’s Best Airline Cards, we compared 23 credit cards from 10 major domestic airlines.

Delta's SkyMiles program typically allowed members to earn loyalty rewards through miles flown. Starting January 1, 2024, SkyMiles members will earn the elite Medallion status — which gives rewards such as unlimited complimentary upgrades and waived baggage fees — through cash spent rather than miles flown. The airline has been dealing with overcrowding issues at its lounges and previously restricted access to Delta employees unless they purchase a ticket. Starting February 1, 2025, cardholders of Delta American Express SkyMiles Reserve and Delta American Express Reserve Business will be limited to 10 visits per year. Delta Air Lines is changing how customers can earn elite frequent flyer status and is making it harder for many American Express cardholders to get into the carrier's airport lounges, the latest reality check for air travel's era of mass luxury. Starting Jan. 1, customers will earn Delta Medallion status solely based on their spending, instead of a combination of dollars spent with the carrier and flights. Next year, Delta customers will earn 1 Medallion Qualifying Dollar for every $1 they spend on Delta flights, car rentals, hotels and vacation packages booked through the airline. The ratio isn't 1:1 for dollars spent through co-branded American Express cards. Delta SkyMiles Reserve and Reserve Business American Express card members earn 1 Medallion Qualifying Dollar for every $10 spent on the card, while Delta SkyMiles Platinum and Platinum Business American Express Card Members earn 1 Medallion Qualifying Dollar for every $20 spent.

However, TikTokers recently found a way to lower some of those travel costs, particularly when it comes to booking flights. The Google Flights "trick" is simple, but does require some flexibility in terms of where and when you're willing to travel. Some TikTokers who posted about this trick have shown themselves finding flights to Cancun for $270 and Las Vegas for $94. Consider booking a flight with a layover While direct flights are convenient, flights with a layover often cost less.
