A reading from the Commerce Department showed retail sales fell 1.1% in December, compared with expectations of a 0.8% drop. Another report showed U.S. producer prices rose less than expected year-on-year in December, adding to evidence of a moderation in inflation. Earnings from big U.S. banks were a mixed bag, with many stockpiling rainy-day funds preparing for a looming recession. Shares of other major carriers including American Airlines Group Inc (AAL.O), Delta Air Lines Inc (DAL.N) and Southwest Airlines Co (LUV.N) rose between 1.6% and 2.2%. IBM Corp (IBM.N) slipped 1.5% after Morgan Stanley downgraded the company's shares to "equal weight" from "overweight", citing slowing revenue growth.
U.S. aviation-safety officials are investigating how two planes came close to a collision on a runway at John F. Kennedy International Airport on Friday night. Delta Air Lines Inc. Flight 1943 was headed down the runway for takeoff when air-traffic controllers noticed another plane crossing in the departing jetliner’s path, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration said Saturday. Delta’s Boeing Co. 737 came to a stop about 1,000 feet before reaching the point where a Boeing 777 operated by American Airlines Group Inc. was crossing, according to the FAA’s preliminary analysis.
Delta says it is planning to return to full 2019 flying capacity this summer. Delta Air Lines Inc. said travel demand remained strong through the end of the year, but its shares tumbled Friday as the airline said rising costs could eat into first-quarter profit. Delta said it expects to report adjusted earnings of 15 cents to 40 cents a share in the first quarter, below what some analysts had been anticipating.

Passengers wait in line at the Delta Air Lines terminal at Los Angeles International Airport. Delta Air Lines Inc. said travel demand remained strong through the end of the year, with full flights and pricey tickets continuing to bolster its profit. “As we move into 2023, the industry backdrop remains favorable,” Delta Chief Executive Ed Bastian said.
Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian called on Washington to increase funding for the Federal Aviation Administration after an outage of a pilot-alert system that grounded thousands of flights across the U.S. this week. "Over the past 36 hours, the FAA has been conducting a preliminary analysis into the NOTAM system interruption," the FAA said late Thursday. In an interview with CNBC's "Squawk Box" on Friday, Delta's Bastian called the incident "unacceptable." "I don't recall us ever shutting down the national air space due to a similar type of technology outage for several hours." The flight delays and cancellations were the second major air travel disruption in less than a month after bad weather derailed holiday travel late last year.

With the Federal Reserve's aggressive tightening campaign to combat inflation, higher borrowing costs have prompted consumers and businesses to curb their spending, impacting banks' profits as demand for credit slows. "Bank earnings are going to be a big test," said Michael Hewson, chief market analyst at CMC Markets UK. "It will be interesting to see whether they (banks) have made any further provisions for non-performing loans, how they see demand for loans." Delta Air Lines Inc (DAL.N), BlackRock Inc (BLK.N) and UnitedHealth Group Inc (UNH.N) are also scheduled to report fourth-quarter earnings on Friday. ET, Dow e-minis were up 10 points, or 0.03%, S&P 500 e-minis were down 0.5 points, or 0.01%, and Nasdaq 100 e-minis were down 16.5 points, or 0.14%.
CHICAGO, Jan 13 (Reuters) - Delta Air Lines Inc (DAL.N) on Friday forecast current-quarter profit below expectations on higher operating costs even as fourth-quarter profit topped Wall Street estimates on the back of robust travel demand. U.S. carriers are enjoying the strongest travel demand since the start of the pandemic, boosted by reopening of closed borders, a strong U.S. dollar and rising corporate travel demand. A worsening economic outlook and rising financial fragility of U.S. households have sparked concerns about consumer spending, but travel demand remains strong and exceeds the pace of flight capacity growth, keeping ticket prices high. The company expected March quarter revenue would be 14%-17% higher than 2019 on capacity that is 1% lower. It expects earnings of 15 cents to 40 cents a share, below a profit of 55 cents a share, expected by analysts in a Refinitiv survey.
JPMorgan Chase & Co (JPM.N) fell 1.2% as it set aside $1.4 billion in anticipation of a mild recession, even after beating quarterly profit estimates. The bank's Chief Executive Jamie Dimon listed a number of uncertainties facing the economy including geopolitical tensions and sticky inflation. Bank of America Corp (BAC.N) reported better-than-expected profit, with CEO Brian Moynihan also acknowledging an "increasingly slowing economic environment". Wells Fargo & Co (WFC.N) and Citigroup Inc (C.N) fell short of quarterly profit estimates, sending their shares down 3.9% and 0.6% respectively. Keeping the pressure off the Dow Jones, UnitedHealth Group Inc (UNH.N) rose 1.9% after beating Wall Street expectations for fourth-quarter profit.
Major carriers such as United Airlines Holdings Inc (UAL.O), American Airlines Group Inc (AAL.O), Delta Air Lines Inc (DAL.N) and Southwest Airlines Co (LUV.N) have rushed to add staff after a faster-than-expected rebound in the U.S. travel market. "Margins are set to take a hit in 2023 as airlines ratify new contracts with labor groups," Cowen analyst Helane Becker said last month. "Delta's recent tentative pilot agreement, assuming it is ratified, could drive incremental unit costs higher by ~2%, and 2%-3% higher for American, Southwest and United," Barclays analyst Brandon Oglenski said on Wednesday. American Airlines on Thursday forecast a higher fourth-quarter profit as the Texas-based carrier benefited from strong demand for travel during the key holiday season. Shares of American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines and Southwest Airlines fell between 14% and 30% in 2022 on mass cancellations and economic worries.

About 80% of Delta’s U.S. domestic mainline fleet will be equipped to launch the offering at the start of February. Delta Air Lines Inc. said it plans to begin offering free wireless internet starting Feb. 1, part of a broader new entertainment package that is likely to intensify competition over airlines’ in-flight offerings. Delta Chief Executive Ed Bastian said Thursday that about 80% of Delta’s U.S. domestic mainline fleet will be equipped to launch the free offering at the start of next month, with more aircraft being added weekly. The airline said free Wi-Fi will be available on more than 700 planes by the end of this year, with the service expanding to all of Delta’s international and regional planes by the end of next year.

Several large airlines say they are capping fares in the wake of the Southwest Airlines Co. meltdown, but that doesn’t mean stranded travelers should expect to find airfare deals. Multiple carriers—including Delta Air Lines Inc., American Airlines Group Inc. and United Airlines Holdings Inc.—said they would put a cap on fares to accommodate travelers making last-minute bookings after Southwest Airlines canceled nearly 16,000 flights since Dec. 22.
The travel disruptions continued into Monday when airlines canceled over 2,500 flights as of early afternoon, according to flight tracking website FlightAware. The hardest hit was Southwest Airlines (LUV.N) with about 1,700 cancellations while Delta Air Lines Inc (DAL.N) had over 250 cancellations. David Sharp said on Twitter his Southwest Airlines flight from Denver to St. Louis was canceled and the next flight was not available for another two days. Voice actress Grey DeLisle tweeted to Southwest Airlines: "Flight 1824 from Nashville to Burbank was canceled due to Elliot and we haven't received any rebooking! Nothing anyone could do but so much travel insanity," tweeted another Twitter user named Alex Gervasi.
WASHINGTON, Dec 24 (Reuters) - Airlines canceled nearly 2,000 U.S. flights as of Saturday morning following a massive winter storm that snarled airport operations around the United States and frustrated thousands of holiday travelers. The flight cancellations on Saturday morning included over 450 from Southwest Airlines (LUV.N) and nearly 400 from Delta Air Lines Inc (DAL.N). The flight disruptions came as an arctic blast gripped much of the United States on Saturday, causing power outages and car wrecks. An NBC News affiliate reported that inclement weather canceled over 130 flights as of Saturday morning at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. Passenger railroad Amtrak also canceled dozens of trains through Christmas, disrupting holiday travel for thousands.

Delta said it is in the process of testing Wi-Fi infrastructure, with ‘various offerings to select customers on select routes.’Delta Air Lines Inc. is expected to begin rolling out free wireless internet for its passengers as soon as early 2023, people familiar with the matter said. The Atlanta-based carrier is initially expected to offer free Wi-Fi on a significant portion of its airplanes before turning on the service on more of its fleet through next year, some of these people said. The move is likely to intensify competition over in-flight offerings as airlines rebound from the pandemic.
Delta Air Lines Inc. is offering pilots raises amounting to at least 34% over the term of a proposed deal, another sign of how pilots are pushing the now-booming airline industry for better pay and other benefits. The proposal still needs to be approved by union leaders and then would have to be ratified by Delta’s pilots. But an agreement would set a bar for rivals that are also trying to hammer out new contracts in what has effectively become an industrywide standoff between airlines and pilots’ unions.
The tight labor market is prompting more employers to eliminate one of the biggest requirements for many higher-paying jobs: the need for a college degree. Companies such as Alphabet Inc.’s Google, Delta Air Lines Inc. and International Business Machines Corp. have reduced educational requirements for certain positions and shifted hiring to focus more on skills and experience. Maryland this year cut college-degree requirements for many state jobs—leading to a surge in hiring—and incoming Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro campaigned on a similar initiative.
Airlines are operating 13% fewer domestic flights during the eight-day Thanksgiving travel period compared with 2019, according to data by Cirium. While flight delays and cancellations marred U.S. summer travel, airlines say they are better prepared to handle the holiday travel rush for Thanksgiving, which occurs on the fourth Thursday in November. Federal officials say they have enough staffing to handle holiday travel as well. More than 1.4 million travelers are going out of town for Thanksgiving by bus, train or cruise ship, AAA estimates. The company this year received Thanksgiving travel bookings as early as June, three months earlier than in 2019.
Lufthansa still interested in buying into ITA Airways

BERLIN, Nov 18 (Reuters) - Lufthansa (LHAG.DE) is still interested in buying into state-controlled Italian carrier ITA Airways, a spokesman said on Friday, despite reports that its original partner in the mooted deal had pulled out. The spokesman declined to comment on reports that it had entered ITA's so-called data room to review the financial status of the company. Italy in August picked a group led by U.S. private equity fund Certares, backed by Air France-KLM (AIRF.PA) and Delta Air Lines Inc (DAL.N), for exclusive talks on buying a majority stake in ITA Airways. Complicating the situation, a senior MSC executive, Pierfrancesco Vago, told investors in Doha last week that MSC was no longer interested in ITA Airways, according to Swiss magazine Travel Inside. Certares had no contact with ITA Airways and Italy's Treasury since the end of October, a source close to the matter said.
Italy names former Treasury official to head ITA Airways

REUTERS/Remo CasilliROME, Nov 16 (Reuters) - The Italian economy ministry on Wednesday said it would appoint former Treasury official Antonino Turicchi as chairman of state-owned carrier ITA Airways, the successor to Alitalia. At ITA Airways, he will take the place of Alfredo Altavilla, who resigned earlier this month after a clash with several board members over strategy to complete the privatisation of the airline. The exclusivity period ended last month but talks over a potential sale agreement are continuing. Confirming a Reuters report on Tuesday, the Treasury said in a statement it would appoint Turicchi at an ITA Airways shareholders' meeting on Wednesday. Turicchi had recently been indicated by political sources as a potential candidate to replace Alessandro Rivera as director-general of the Treasury.
WASHINGTON, Nov 4 (Reuters) - The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said on Friday it would partially approve a request by JetBlue Airways (JBLU.O) to waive minimum flight requirements at New York-area airports John F. Kennedy International and Newark Liberty International. The decision allows JetBlue to hold on to valuable flight rights at some of the most congested U.S. airports. JetBlue sought the waiver in July, saying its "workforce and flight operations are under extraordinary strain, leaving little margin for operational challenges caused by airport construction, (air traffic control) delays and weather," the FAA said. The relief, which runs retroactively through Oct. 29, will allow JetBlue to hold on to some slots, which are takeoff and landing authorizations. Delta had asked the FAA to waive minimum slot requirements because of issues including New York airport construction, significant crew sick time, severe weather and air traffic control delays and cancellations.
Pilots Are Frustrated With Airlines, Too

Contract talks between the biggest U.S. carriers and their pilots’ unions have turned acrimonious in recent weeks, with pilots saying the summer disruptions have left them as frustrated as passengers. Airline employees have been picketing at airports for months. The board of the Allied Pilots Association, which represents pilots at American Airlines Group Inc., on Wednesday voted down a proposal for a two-year contract that would have boosted pilot pay by about 20% over that time. Delta Air Lines Inc. pilots overwhelmingly voted this week to let union leaders call a strike if they decide it is necessary—a vote that is largely symbolic for now but reflects pilots’ frustration with what they see as stalled progress. United Airlines Holdings Inc. pilots rejected an unpopular agreement its union struck earlier this year.
Oct 24 (Reuters) - A Korean Air Lines Co Ltd (003490.KS) jet with 173 people on board overshot the runway at Cebu International Airport in the Philippines late Sunday, the airline said, adding that there were no injuries and all passengers had evacuated safely. The Airbus SE (AIR.PA) A330 widebody flying from Seoul to Cebu had tried to land twice in poor weather before it overran the runway on the third attempt at 23:07 local time, Korean Air said in a statement on Monday. "Passengers have been escorted to three local hotels and an alternative flight is being arranged," the airline said of flight KE361. Korean Air President Keehong Woo issued a letter of apology regarding the flight on the airline's website, noting that a thorough investigation would be performed with local aviation authorities and Korean authorities to determine the cause. Korean Air has not had a fatal passenger crash since 1997, according to Aviation Safety Network, a website that compiles aviation accidents.

REUTERS/Chris HelgrenCHICAGO, Oct 18 (Reuters) - United Airlines Holdings (UAL.O) on Tuesday reported higher-than-expected third-quarter earnings and forecast a stronger profit in the current quarter due to a robust rebound in travel demand. The Chicago-based carrier reported an adjusted profit of $2.81 per share for the third quarter, topping analysts' expectations by 53 cents, according to Refinitiv data. That marked the company's best performance since the third quarter of 2019, just before the COVID-19 pandemic hit. That would be more than double Wall Street estimates of 98 cents a share for the fourth quarter.
REUTERS/Joshua Schneyer/File PhotoOct 14 (Reuters) - Hyundai Motor Co's (005380.KS) air taxi unit has picked aerospace supplier Honeywell International Inc (HON.O) to develop avionics systems for its eVTOL (electric vertical take-off and landing) aircraft, the companies said, ahead of an announcement next week. "We want to see the FAA come out with its set of certification rules, quickly. Honeywell's collaboration with Supernal is its first with an air taxi firm established by an automaker. The company, which is a big supplier to Boeing Co (BA.N) and Airbus SE (AIR.PA), also has investments in other eVTOL firms - Lilium, Vertical Aerospace and Volocopter. The company expects the overall market for air taxis to be about $120 billion per year by 2030, Fymat added.
