In the three days since President Biden announced he was quitting the 2024 race, Mr. Trump has entered foreign territory. But within 24 hours, Democratic leaders unofficially crowned Ms. Harris and stamped out any notable opposition. His team considered mounting legal challenges to her campaign committee to make it harder for Ms. Harris to hit the ground running. And Mr. Trump is still cycling through nicknames for Ms. Harris — a sign that he hasn’t yet figured out how he intends to portray her. And some Trump campaign officials have telegraphed plans to “Willie Horton” Ms. Harris.

Mr. Biden, who had been recovering from the coronavirus at his Delaware beach home, has been mostly out of sight since last week. He announced his decision to drop out of the race in a letter posted on X. On Monday, Mr. Biden called into a meeting led by Ms. Harris at the Wilmington, Del., headquarters of what used to be their joint campaign and insisted that he would be “fully, fully engaged” in helping to get her elected.

Biden Plans to Address the Nation on Wednesday Night

President Biden plans to address the nation from the Oval Office on Wednesday night to explain his decision to bow out of the presidential campaign and outline how he wants to use his final six months in office. Mr. Biden is scheduled to return to Washington on Tuesday afternoon for the first time since announcing his withdrawal on social media on Sunday. He spent six days at his vacation house in Rehoboth Beach, Del., recovering from Covid and recalibrating his political future. Mr. Biden has not been seen in public since late Wednesday, when he disembarked from Air Force One at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware looking frail and uncertain. The White House physician said on Monday that after days of treatment with Paxlovid, the president was recovering well and that his symptoms were “almost completely resolved.”

“I need you and Mike at the house,” President Biden said late Saturday afternoon. Mr. Biden was on the phone from his vacation home in Rehoboth, Del., with Steve Ricchetti, one of his closest advisers. Soon, both men were in Rehoboth, socially distanced from the president, who was recovering from Covid. He would not tell most of his staff until a minute before making his announcement to the world on Twitter on Sunday. Vice President Kamala Harris, whom Mr. Biden went on to endorse, also learned on Sunday, although it is unclear when.

California Rep. Mark Takano on Saturday publicly urged President Joe Biden to drop out of the race against former President Donald Trump, and instead allow Vice President Kamala Harris to helm the ticket. "President Biden's greatest accomplishment remains saving democracy in 2020. He can and must do so again in 2024 — by passing the torch to Vice President Harris as the Democratic Party Presidential nominee," Takano said in a statement. "As soon as we have the green light, we are going to be back out on the stump," Biden campaign spokesperson Michael Tyler told reporters Saturday morning. "We know which candidate in this election puts the American people first: our President, Joe Biden," she said.

Even before the debate, Mr. Biden had told confidants that he believed he had a far better chance than Ms. Harris of beating Mr. Trump. By making the case for himself publicly and privately, Mr. Biden has implicitly had to downplay her chances of winning. Several people close to President Biden said on Thursday that they believe he has begun to accept the idea that he may not be able to win in November and may have to drop out of the race, bowing to the growing demands of many anxious members of his party. One of the people close to him warned that the president had not yet made up his mind to leave the race after three weeks of insisting that almost nothing would drive him out. But another said that “reality is setting in,” and that it would not be a surprise if Mr. Biden made an announcement soon endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris as his replacement. Mr. Biden remained in isolation at his vacation home in Rehoboth Beach, Del., after being diagnosed with Covid on Wednesday. But there was also caution about reading signs from a president with an exceedingly small circle of confidants.

Top allies have either publicly or privately called on him to step aside. "We're close to the end," a person close to Biden said. That person, who previously doubted Biden would ever step aside, acknowledged that it's the president's decision but joined in the array of Biden allies who say he is nearing a point of no return. "The president is feeling fine, he is self-isolating in Delaware," Quentin Fulks, principal deputy campaign manager for the Biden campaign, said at a news conference in Milwaukee. "Our campaign is not working through any scenarios where President Biden is not the top of the ticket.

WASHINGTON — After he gave his State of the Union speech in March, President Joe Biden seemed to have quieted persistent fears that, at 81, he was no longer up to the job. But a Democratic lawmaker who shook hands with Biden in the House chamber that night was troubled by his appearance. Biden's poor showing at the debate with Donald Trump last week threatens to end his campaign just four months before the election. A third Democratic lawmaker said that in recent months, Biden looked "exceedingly tired" when the two were together. Yet the interview comes eight days after Biden's appearance onstage with Trump — time enough for perceptions of his poor performance to calcify.

U.S. President Joe Biden delivers remarks on the Middle East in the State Dining room at the White House in Washington, U.S., May 31, 2024. For likely voters, Trump led Biden by a slightly smaller 6-point margin, though that was 3 points higher than before the debate. The New York Times poll surveyed 1,532 registered voters across the country from June 28 to July 2. While Biden's campaign continues its blitz, pressure mounts for the president to consider bowing out of the 2024 race. In response, the White House and the Biden campaign have rolled out a slate of events for the coming week to reassure the public.

Later on Friday, top White House aides worked the phones, with Mr. Biden’s chief of staff, Jeff Zients, calling the Democratic leader of the Senate, Chuck Schumer, to check in, according to a person familiar with the call. Democrat candidate, U.S. President Joe Biden, and Republican candidate, former U.S. President Donald Trump, attend a presidential debate in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S., June 27, 2024. "Yes, it was a bad performance," South Carolina's Democratic Rep. Jim Clyburn, a close Biden ally, said on CNN's "State of the Union." Biden and Trump are scheduled for a second debate on Sept. 10, though it is unclear whether both candidates will follow through. In the meantime, the Biden campaign has been raking in large fundraising hauls in the wake of the debate. As of Sunday morning, the campaign had raised $33 million since Thursday, $26 million of which came from grassroots donors, according to Biden campaign spokesperson Kevin Munoz.

Hunter Biden is expected to appeal his felony conviction for falsifying a federal firearms application, likely arguing that the judge in the case violated his constitutional rights in her instructions to the jury, according to people in his orbit and legal experts. Mr. Biden’s lawyer Abbe Lowell has also signaled that any appeal would be based on the Supreme Court’s landmark decision in 2022 that vastly expanded gun rights, a ruling that spawned legal challenges to the part of the federal firearms form at the center of the Biden case. In Mr. Biden’s case, it included a question asking buyers about their drug use. There is still a possibility that David C. Weiss, the special counsel in the case, will seek a plea agreement before the tax trial begins, and would have leverage in negotiations now that Mr. Biden is already a convicted felon, according to former prosecutors. Mr. Biden might have greater incentive to reach a deal to avoid another public airing of his personal ordeal beyond what was presented in Wilmington last week.

Mr. Biden was speaking just hours after his son Hunter Biden was convicted in Delaware of three felony counts of lying on a federal firearms application in 2018. Previously, the president had vowed not to pardon Hunter Biden if he were to be found guilty. He did not address his son’s conviction during his remarks on Tuesday. Mr. Biden has made gun reform a central part of his administration. The passage of the bill ended nearly three decades of gridlock over gun reform in Washington, although it fell short of many of the sweeping measures sought by Democrats.

A jury in Wilmington, Del., on Tuesday found Hunter Biden, President Biden’s son, guilty of three felony counts for lying on a federal firearms application, a shattering blow for the Biden family in the middle of an unforgiving presidential election campaign. The verdict brought an end to an extraordinary seven-day trial that made painfully public Mr. Biden’s crack addiction, reckless behavior and ruinous spending — narrated by three former romantic partners, including the widow of his brother, Beau Biden, and by the defendant himself in the pages of his memoir. The charges that Mr. Biden was convicted of stem from the purchase of a Colt pistol in October 2018, and also included illegal possession of a weapon after falsely claiming to be drug-free on the standard background check required in all firearms transactions. Mr. Biden, 54, faces up to 25 years in prison, although federal sentencing guidelines call for a fraction of that penalty. First-time offenders who did not use their weapons to commit violent crimes typically see little jail time, and prosecutors suggested they would not seek a sentence more severe than for any other person convicted in such a case.

The speed of the verdict took nearly everyone by surprise — including the first lady, Jill Biden. As the verdict was read aloud — guilty on all three felony counts — Hunter Biden stood with arms crossed, grimly surveying the jury. After jurors left the courtroom, Mr. Biden hugged his lawyers. Jill Biden, the first lady and Mr. Biden’s stepmother who attended most days of the trial, was not able to get to the courtroom in time for the verdict because of security delays. But she held Mr. Biden’s hand as he left the courthouse and got into a waiting vehicle without speaking to reporters.

Opinion | Hunter Biden Should Take a Plea Deal. Quickly.

Hunter Biden faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted on three felony gun charges in a trial that is set to begin in Wilmington, Del., on Monday. In the meantime, his father is behind in many polls, his financial benefactor is reportedly “tapped out” and his best legal arguments require gutting federal gun control laws. An early plea agreement — in which he agreed to plead guilty to two misdemeanor tax charges and enter into a deferred prosecution agreement on the gun charges — fell apart last summer. But a criminal defendant can accept a plea deal from the prosecution anytime before the jury returns its verdict, which means that he might still have a chance to avoid a full trial. In practice, this means that once the Department of Justice has indicted you, they believe they will win.
