Scientists identified a new species of Tyrannosaurs that's likely a predecessor to T. Rex. The new species shows the dinosaurs got bigger a lot earlier than scientists originally thought. Upon reexamination, the scientists found that the bones belonged to a dinosaur that lived 6 million to 7 million years before T. rex existed. That means that Tyrannosaurus, "also got bigger a lot earlier than we thought," Longrich said. Despite what many scientists thought, the T. Rex wasn't the first Tyrannosaurus, but the last, Longrich said.

I'm in my 50s and live in a community in Palm Springs of mostly retired people. In the Coachella Valley, over 25% of residents are 60 and above, which means they are mostly retirees. My husband, two children, and I had visited Palm Springs in the past and enjoyed the activities and slower-paced vibe, and we decided to move during the pandemic to lay down new roots. On the first Sunday of every month, I visit the Palm Springs Vintage Market to find upcycled and reclaimed items to add to my home. Before there was tourism, there was pilgrimage: a trip of endurance, hardship and ecstasy in celebration of one’s faith. On an epic pilgrimage of his own, one writer ventures into the heart of three great religions in Bolivia, Mongolia and Iraq. The Imam Hussein shrine in Karbala the day after Ashura. “They’re poor, but they come thousands of kilometers for the love of Imam Hussein.” PILGRIMAGE WAS A great equalizer. “Labaik ya Hussein,” came the solemn chorus of surrounding voices.

(AP) — Hurricane Lee looks poised to wallop New England later this week even as the region still deals with the impact of days of wild weather that produced torrential rain, flooding, sinkholes and a likely tornado. Areas from Watch Hill, Rhode Island, to Stonington, Maine — including Block Island, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket — are under a tropical storm watch. The National Weather Service in Boston said radar data and videos showed it was likely that a tornado damaged trees and power lines in Rhode Island and Connecticut on Wednesday. Heavy rain turned his swimming pool into a mud pit and filled his basement with 3 feet (91 centimeters) of water. In Providence, Rhode Island, downpours flooded a parking lot and parts of a shopping mall.

McPherson said TMX has advised companies seeking to list that the "window of opportunity" for initial public offerings, when it opens, might be a short window of three to six months rather than a year. "There is a pipeline out there that's waiting for the right time to enter the market," McPherson said. As such, economists are cautioning against reading too much into any sharp deceleration in job gains when the Labor Department's publishes its closely watched employment report on Friday. Nonfarm payrolls likely increased by 170,000 jobs last month after rising 187,000 in July, according to a Reuters survey of economists. Still, employment growth would be more than the roughly 100,000 jobs per month needed to keep up with the increase in the working age population. Yellow Corp trucking filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in early August, leaving about 30,000 workers unemployed. "This (job growth) would be one more piece of evidence that would be consistent with that, but that also depends a lot on the upcoming inflation data."

White jazz artists were antiracists before the term was inventedMany of the tributes to Bennett mentioned his disdain for bigotry. Many White jazz artists were antiracists, long before the word was invented. Frank Sinatra, Bennett’s musical mentor, recorded with and relentlessly championed Black jazz artists like Ella Fitzgerald and Count Basie. According to a Reuters survey of economists, GDP growth likely increased at a 1.8% annualized rate last quarter after rising at a 2.0% pace in the first quarter. Consumer spending, which accounts for more than two-thirds of U.S. economic activity, likely remained a pillar of support, although the pace of growth slowed from the second quarter's robust 4.2% rate. Further contribution to GDP growth was expected from government spending. Inventory investment is a wild card, though most economists are penciling in a contribution to GDP growth of at least five tenths of a percentage point. Business sharply reduced inventory accumulation in the January-March quarter in anticipation of weaker domestic demand, slicing 2.14 percentage points off GDP growth that period.

Tony Bennett, Always a Class Act
  + stars: | 2023-07-21 | by ( Jim Windolf | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Like his singing voice, Tony Bennett’s personal style was supple, straightforward and sure of itself. He resisted the temptation to change his approach to music when rock overtook the pop charts, and he largely stayed away from many sartorial trends that came and went during his seven decades in show business, wisely sticking with tuxedos and smartly tailored suits, many of them from the Italian fashion brand Brioni. For more casual moments, he went with slacks and a blazer, sometimes with a handsome dark turtleneck in place of a button-down shirt and tie. Paradoxically enough, by sticking with the style that allowed him to feel most himself when it came to both music and fashion, Mr. Bennett managed to avoid the trap of becoming associated too strongly with any one era. In recent decades, when men’s fashion magazines celebrated the ring-a-ding-ding style of the 1950s and early 1960s in backward-looking fashion spreads, they tended to focus on Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and other dyed-in-the-wool members of the Rat Pack.

CNN and the GVA define a mass shooting as a shooting that injures or kills four or more people, not including the shooter. They argue that more firearms and higher gun ownership increases public safety – a stance that continues to be at odds with gun violence experts and data. The area around the Robb Elementary School signs has become a memorial dedicated to the victims of the May 24 mass shooting. Mass shootings are just a piece of that, and the strategies that we’re laying out will impact mass shootings. They’ll also impact a lot of other types of gun violence and that’s absolutely critical to saving lives,” Horwitz said.
