Republicans in Florida want to change the law so DeSantis can run for president and keep his job. The comments came as the new GOP legislature and leaders were sworn in Tuesday. Ron DeSantis could run for president without resigning from his current job. Senate President Kathleen Passidomo echoed Renner's comments, saying it would be an "honor" to have someone from Florida running for president. Under current Florida law, if DeSantis were to run for president then he would have to resign his post as governor — even if he eventually lost the presidency.
Then-President-elect Donald Trump shakes hands with Ronald Lauder, President of the World Jewish Congress, after a meeting on December 28, 2016 at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida. Billionaire and GOP megadonor Ronald Lauder won't help finance Donald Trump's 2024 campaign for president, his spokesman told CNBC on Wednesday. Lauder, an heir to the Estée Lauder fortune, is the latest Republican megadonor to distance himself from Trump as the former president launches a third bid for the White House. Lauder reportedly spoke to Trump while he was president about the idea of the U.S. buying Greenland. Though his spokesman did not say who Lauder will support in 2024, Florida campaign finance records show that the billionaire businessman donated $10,000 last year to a political action committee supporting Florida Gov.
But the Republican governor did take a victory lap over his historic win, saying Florida can lead. Trump endorsed DeSantis for governor in 2018, catapulting him to the top of the nomination. That year, DeSantis won by only half a percentage point. This year, without Trump's endorsement, DeSantis won his reelection by nearly 20 points in Florida. "It was the greatest Republican victory in the history of the state of Florida."
Trump took a dig at DeSantis on his social media platform, Truth Social, a day after the election. Trump won Florida in 2020 by a 3.4-percentage point margin. In this election, Trump did not endorse DeSantis, but the governor made huge inroads in the state. The weekend before the election Trump mocked DeSantis publicly as "Ron DeSanctimonious" and then did not invite the governor to campaign alongside him in Miami. He didn't all-out endorse the governor at the event, instead telling the crowd only to "reelect Ron DeSantis as your governor."
Trump on Saturday mocked DeSantis with a nickname, something he's often done for political enemies. DeSantis also won't be appearing at Trump's Florida rally on Sunday, in an apparent snub. Trump was referencing a poll that showed he was in the lead among other potential Republican nominees when he offhandedly called DeSantis "Ron DeSanctimonious." Neither Trump nor DeSantis has announced plans to run for president in 2024, though both are rumored to be potential candidates. Aside from DeSantis, Trump will be appearing alongside just about everyone who's anyone in Florida GOP politics.

"The only worn-out old donkey I want to put out to pasture is Charlie Crist," DeSantis said. DeSantis was implying both Biden and Crist are old. But in the process, DeSantis criticized the age of Crist, a former Democratic congressman, and Republican governor, as well as President Joe Biden. DeSantis' comment comes after Crist accused DeSantis of wanting to run for president in 2024. Trump would be 78 if he were to become president again in 2024 — the same age Biden was when he became president.
