It can be hard to focus on work when temperatures are climbing into the hundreds and every other person you follow on Instagram is vacationing in Europe. Even if you can't slack off at your job — or take a break from work altogether — it is possible to work less and still be productive in the summer. "Working fewer hours in the summer doesn't mean you're neglecting your responsibilities and doing a bad job," says Marisa Jo Mayes, a self-employed TikTok creator and startup founder who coined the "Bare Minimum Mondays" workplace trend. It might feel counterintuitive, but past research has shown that slowing down at work can also help curb stress, thus making it easier to focus and be productive. Here, Mayes and two productivity experts share their best advice for getting more work done in less time during the summer:

The fan communities that have formed around these pairs are forged through wondering and wishing, in-jokes and lingo and those in the know. Our touchstone isn’t the friendship itself; it’s a feeling, an act of quiet yearning, a longing look and a passed note. For many queer women, first love means falling for a friend, hiding your feelings and hoping they’ll pass, pretending to like boys — and underneath all that, praying she feels it, too. Much has been written about the perverse parasociality of fandom, the blurring line between public displays of devotion and invasions of privacy. Queer fandoms often foster an especially ardent passion, passed among people who’ve felt misunderstood and judged for whom they love, finally publicly expressing adoration.

Powerball's projected jackpot is $875 million — the third-highest ever – ahead of Saturday's draw. While most ticket holders daydream about defying the odds and winning the prize, many don't know what steps they should take immediately after winning all that money. Until you claim the prize, the ticket will be worth hundreds of millions of dollars, which will make you a target for scammers. "Not to mention the risk to your family's personal safety." Keep the ticket secureKeep your winning ticket in a secure location, preferably in a safety deposit box at your bank, or in a personal safe.

That's worrying concert venues that depend on alcohol sales for their profits, Billboard reported. "Bar sales are important for every music venue, but especially for smaller ones," a talent agent told the magazine. That's because alcohol sales help keep the lights on at clubs around the country. David Slutes, who runs a venue called Club Congress in Tuscon, Arizona, said that he'd noticed alcohol sales had dropped up to 25% when booking shows for a Gen Z-focused crowd. Some venues told the magazine they're experimenting with renting out their facilities for more private events to make up for lost revenue.

If there’s one living stand-up legend whose jokes are perfect for Twitter, it’s Steven Wright. Not only are they concise (“Lost a buttonhole”) but so meticulously absurd (“I like to reminisce with people I don’t know”) that rapid shifts of context don’t distort their meaning. So it was a surprise that when he started an account in 2011, he didn’t use it to try out punch lines, but to write a novel — very slowly. It almost sounds like a Steven Wright joke. “I wanted to put a funnel on Harold’s head and pour everything I think about being alive” into it, he said.

Community feels good. Activism feels good. Cultivating feels good. Sometimes we go out and work in community because we want to alter and renew our sense of what is possible. Last year, author Laura Vanderkam wrote in The New York Times that quitting is not the answer to burnout.
She describes the 12 stages of burnout, a model developed by psychologist Herbert Freudenberger. There are actually 12 stages of burnout. Stage 1: Excessive ambitionThe first of the 12 stages of burnout begins in a seemingly harmless way – with enthusiasm toward your work. Stage 12: Full burnout syndromeFull Burnout Syndrome occurs when you reach a breaking point. Take a moment to reflectWhich of the 12 stages of burnout do you see yourself in?

46% of American workers take less paid time off than they are offered, per the Pew Research Center. Respondents worry taking time off will slow down their career advancement, among other concerns. They found that nearly46% of American workers aren't taking all of their allotted paid time off. Lower-income workers said they were "more likely" to worry about losing their jobs for taking all of their time off than "middle and upper-income workers." Workers "want to know they can take time off when they need it," she said, "but this new data shows us that many workers don't. "
Lucid, a Tesla rival, is planning layoffs. The EV startup is planning to lay off hundreds of employees, my colleague Alexa St. John reported. Lucid has had a challenging few months, as it works to nail down manufacturing and production and get cars on the roads. It's not the only EV company that's struggling. Insider's Tim Levin tested out charging a KIA EV at a former Tesla supercharger that's open to all EVs.
Donald Trump recently said he'd love to see GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene run for Senate. The last three Senate hopefuls Trump has backed in Georgia have lost six straight contests. Current Senate campaign chair Gary Peters is confident Greene would also fall short. Warnock looked rather incredulous as Insider asked for his opinion about Trump's show of support for a Greene senate bid. That's exactly the right attitude to take, Democratic strategist Rodell Mollieneau told Insider.
While I daydream about getting my culinary education partially comped too, let's dive into today's tech. Googlers tell CEO Sundar Pichai: "Don't be evil." But more than 1,400 Googlers asked their CEO to continue the spirit of the adage by handling layoffs better. They cited Ukraine as an example and urged Pichai to offer extra support for workers who hold work visas. Today, Vice Media is scrambling for a buyer, and its future will likely be determined in the coming months.

My editor asked me to see whether ChatGPT, an AI chatbot, could write a decent resignation letter. But I hadn't expected that the personalized resignation letter would prompt self-reflection. What I didn't expect was that the effect of seeing ChatGPT's personalized resignation letter in black and white would be so jarring. My request was straightforward and so was the reply:Can you write me a resignation letter for my job as Senior Correspondent at Insider? If you change your mind and decide that you do not want to resign, you can try to retract your resignation letter.
Unless managers encourage vacation, workers too often don't take the days they should. While the growth of unlimited PTO might seem like a big win for workers, research and commentary from workplace experts suggest unlimited vacation is often, well, limiting. Geoffrey James, a contributing editor for Inc. and author of several business books, called unlimited PTO "the scam of the century." "Unlimited vacation time is classic bait-and-switch," he wrote, explaining his experience with having the benefit. Some employers have learned about the shortcomings of unlimited vacation through experience and have walked back their policies.
Will Sutherland owns a "skoolie" Airbnb — a bus he bought for $1,000 and turned into a bedroom. Sutherland also hosts guests at a treehouse Airbnb he built himself. Then a school bus popped up on the screen. It was my first time driving a school bus, and its top speed was 55 miles an hour. : How to Convert a School Bus or Van into a Tiny Home or Recreational Vehicle."
Will Sutherland owns a treehouse Airbnb on his property. I also sourced a bunch of cedar logs from a friend who was having a house built. For years, our guests in our Airbnb skoolie — a converted school bus — had been using the bathroom in our house. When I built the treehouse, I also built a bathhouse with a shower and a toilet at the same time. We basically live in a little miniature community here, flanked by our bus guests and treehouse guests all the time.
Jon Kendle wanted to work in sports so got a summer internship at the NFL Hall of Fame in 2005. Kendle is now the vice president of museum and archives for the Hall and met Tom Brady on the job. I was born and raised in Canton, Ohio, the home of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. I was able to run down to the archives and find Tom Brady's draft card and show it to him. The draft card is just a piece of paper with a name written on it, but it means so much more.

REUTERS/Leonhard Foeger/File PhotoLONDON, Sept 22 (Reuters) - David Bowie was honoured with a paving stone on the London Music Walk of Fame on Thursday, joining the likes of The Who, Amy Winehouse, Madness and Soul II Soul on the cultural attraction trail in the city's famed Camden Town area. Depicting a music record with the word "icon" on it, the stone was unveiled at a ceremony where Bowie's hits were played. In a nod to the starry sidewalks of Hollywood Boulevard, the London Music Walk of Fame was launched in 2019 with rockers The Who the first to be honoured. "The film ... gave us the catalyst to come back with David and unlock the rest of the schedule," Lee Bennett, founder of the Music Walk of Fame, said.
For the first time since we began, the site began paying for itself. And for that, we needed more site traffic. When major area attractions closed for the post-holiday winter season, our site traffic plummeted, as did our revenue. This allowed us to integrate blog work into our regular work weeks instead of treating it like a side hustle. Whether or not we will simply continue to scale back our day jobs or pivot to solely blog income in the future remains to be seen.
