CNN —Elon Musk deleted a post Monday morning that questioned why former President Donald Trump has faced two apparent assassination attempts in recent months while President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have not encountered any. “And no one is even trying to assassinate Biden/Kamala 🤔,” Musk wrote in the now-deleted X post. However, Musk subsequently responded to a similar post, replying with a thinking face emoji to a photo that noted the four presidents who preceded Trump faced no assassination attempts when Trump has apparently encountered two. CNN requested comment from the Secret Service, which is tasked with investigating perceived threats against the president and vice president – sometimes even if they are made in jest. Musk endorsed Trump for president after an assassination attempt in July, and he hosted Trump last month in an interview on X.It’s part of a rightward shift for Musk that has gained steam in recent years.

CNN —Emily Wiprud, the first officer piloting Alaska Airlines Flight 1282 on January 5, says she initially thought people had been killed when the plane’s door plug blew off shortly after takeoff, according to an interview with CBS News Wednesday. I was in shock.”Emily Wiprud, the first officer piloting Alaska Airlines Flight 1282 on January 5, in an interview with CBS News Wednesday. Federal investigations would later determine that Boeing delivered the 737 Max plane to Alaska Airlines without four bolts that were designed to hold the door plug in place. Wiprud said from the flight deck she knew something terrible had happened, but she didn’t immediately know that the door plug had blown off. For example, neither Boeing nor the National Transportation Safety Board know how the 737 Max was delivered to Alaska Airlines without the four bolts.

So why were Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump talking so much about expanding oil production during Tuesday night’s debate? Fossil fuel will be dead,” Trump said. For all the candidates’ talk of promoting fossil fuel production, it’s not clear that America needs drastically more oil. US oil production has already spiked to a record of 13.4 million barrels per day, according to weekly federal data. So it would likely take an extreme — or calamitous — event to get gas prices back below $2.

Dow gets a 500-point boost
  + stars: | 2024-09-09 | by ( David Goldman | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +2 min
The Dow rose 484 points, or 1.2%, on Monday. At one point earlier in the afternoon, the Dow was up more than 600 points. This week, investors will get another look at US inflation data, starting Wednesday morning with the Consumer Price Index report. The Fed has kept interest rates high to bring price hikes under control. Because consumer spending makes up the vast majority of America’s economy, the Fed almost always plunges the economy into a recession when it hikes rates — although that’s obviously not the goal.

New York CNN —Nvidia, the nearly $3 trillion AI chip maker, is well known as a “golden handcuffs” employer. It’s worked especially well for Nvidia, a 30-year-old tech company whose specialized chips now account for 90% of AI-related chip sales. Since 2019, Nvidia’s stock has soared 3,000% — minting millionaires among its rank and file. Things got worse for Nvidia on Tuesday, when shares fell 9.5%, wiping $279 billion off its value. As my colleague David Goldman noted, only 27 companies on Earth are worth as much as Nvidia lost on Tuesday.

CNN —Nvidia, the AI chipmaking titan that was briefly the world’s most valuable company, has suddenly found itself in an unfamiliar position: a major rut. Nvidia (NVDA) had the worst day in the history of the stock market Tuesday, as measured by loss in total market value. To put that shocking decline into context, only 27 companies on the planet are worth as much as Nvidia lost in value Tuesday. That’s why bulls like Wedbush’s Dan Ives believe Nvidia’s stock decline presents a buying opportunity. – CNN’s Ramishah Maruf contributed to this reportCorrection: Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly described TSMC's relationship with Nvidia.

CNN —Elon Musk said an attack on X delayed his interview with former President Donald Trump by 42 minutes. But Musk also blamed mistakes by X’s staff for the snafu that prevented people from joining the stream. On his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump had called DeSantis’ technical difficulties on X a “disaster,” which Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign reposted during the meltdown Monday night. But when people tried to access the Trump interview at the scheduled 8 pm ET start time, they were greeted with grayed out screens and were unable to join. Eventually, the interview began, and both X and Musk claimed it was a success.

If reelected, Trump said Thursday he’d go further: He’d try to exert direct power over monetary policy. He gets a little bit too early and a little bit too late,” Trump said. Still, Trump has recently advocated against a rate cut before the election, saying such a decision from the Fed would be a gift to the Democratic party. Rate cuts tend to reduce borrowing costs for consumers and businesses, freeing up cash to to spend and boosting the economy. Presidents frequently gripe about Fed policy, but Trump’s public pressure campaign is in a league of its own.

Boies, hired to lead Delta’s lawsuit against CrowdStrike, said the tech company was “grossly negligent” and was solely responsible for the outage. But Boies called Delta’s IT systems “world class” and claimed Delta’s outage lasted longer because it was so heavily reliant on CrowdStrike and Microsoft. He also disputed the companies’ claims that Delta turned down help and worked around the clock to bring Delta back online. “CrowdStrike also did not work “tirelessly” to help Delta restore its systems,” Boies said. CrowdStrike said Delta ignored its help, and Microsoft said Delta’s mismanagement contributed to the cancellations.

mapodile/E+/Getty ImagesFor individual investors, the quick-turn global rout in stocks on Monday was unsettling, even with news Tuesday that there is somewhat of a bounce-back going on. But if you’re investing in a 401(k), daily market dramas are no reason to take dramatic actions with your portfolio. Andy Smith, executive director of financial planning at Edelman Financial Engines, puts it this way: “Separate your emotion from your money. Say you set up a portfolio of 70% stocks and 30% bonds but now it’s morphed into a 60/40 portfolio. And remind yourself periodically that even bear markets have not stopped the long-term increases in stocks over time.

Why the stock market is freaking out again

The Dow tumbled more than 1,000 points at the open, and the broader market plunged 3% Monday. The Nasdaq, full of risky tech stocks, dropped 3.7%. Although that’s not in and of itself an unhealthy unemployment rate, its sudden march higher is alarming: Last year, the unemployment rate was at its lowest level since the moon landing. Traders are beginning to unwind big trades on Apple, Nvidia, Microsoft, Meta, Amazon, Alphabet and other tech stocks that had been surging since the beginning of last year. Monday’s rout, if it ends at current levels, wouldn’t even crack the top 100 worst days in market history.

The tough environment for McDonald’s wasn’t limited to the United States: Sales at stores open for at least a year fell 1% globally. The company also makes parts for Boeing’s rival Airbus, although Boeing is Spirit’s largest customer. Boeing said it had previously investigated Cuevas’ allegations and they did not pose a safety problem. Cuevas said he filed a complaint with Boeing’s ethics hotline, reporting to management that he believed Spirit was hiding the issues from Boeing. He also alleges that Boeing opened an investigation into Cuevas’ concerns in October 2023, alerting Spirit management to the complaints. A separate report found “gaps” in Boeing’s safety culture, including a disconnect between management and employees, and fears among employees about retaliation for reporting safety concerns. Across the planet, basalt rock deposits on the sea floor have the potential to trap carbon dioxide, removing the heat-trapping gas from our atmosphere. First, the scientists need about $60 million to test a prototype at sea. Basalt rock is highly reactive, full of metals that readily grab CO2 and chemically combine with it to form carbonate minerals.
