As families gather for Thanksgiving this year, money is one topic that likely won't be discussed. Yet experts say it's a perfect time to start the conversation, particularly with aging parents. More than half of Americans — 56% — say their parents never discussed money with them, according to a recent Fidelity survey of 1,900 adults ages 18 and up. For the wealth they do have, most Americans say they accumulated it on their own, with 80% identifying as self-made and only 5% saying they inherited it, Fidelity found. 1 sign of successYet experts say that not having a plan in place can leave individuals and their families vulnerable when unexpected events happen.

CNN —At a Thanksgiving gathering three decades ago, I went cold turkey on eating meat. “To quote George Bernard Shaw,” I announced, “‘Animals are my friends, and I don’t eat my friends.’”No one else made a toast. And over the past three decades, vegetarian options on restaurant menus have grown alongside my palate. The world is getting more culinarily progressiveBefore I got married, my in-laws thought I was a little odd for not eating meat. “I eat very little meat,” I’ve heard thousands of times after I say I’m vegetarian.

But amid growing fears of a deadly bird flu pandemic, perhaps no one was more rattled than experts in infectious disease. Dr. Bhattacharya, a Stanford University medical economist and outspoken opponent of lockdowns, masking, school closures and other Covid-19 mitigation measures, and Mr. Trump’s other health picks have one thing in common. They are all considered Covid contrarians whose views raise questions about how they would handle an infectious disease crisis. Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Mr. Trump’s choice for health secretary, has said he wants the N.I.H. of its role in ensuring vaccine safety, saying the agency had a “conflict of interest” because it also promotes vaccination.

CNN —Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola had no issues with fans booing his players after the team threw away a 3-0 lead and drew 3-3 against Feyenoord in the Champions League. The draw leaves City 15th in the new 36-team group phase in the Champions League. Per Reuters, City is the first team in Champions League history to fail to win a match having led by three goals in the 75th minute. People come here not to remember the success in the past, they come here today to see the team win and perform well. To look at the short list of names Donald Trump is hoping to appoint to the country’s leading public health roles, it’s easy to see that Covid-19 has remade the country and its ideological arrangements — but perhaps especially the Republican Party. Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Trump’s pick to lead the Department of Health and Human Services, is the most conspicuous example — a reflexive anti-establishment agitator who has trafficked in conspiracy theories about the origins of AIDS, 5G and especially the dangers of common vaccines. Kennedy has called the Covid vaccines, which have probably saved more than 20 million lives globally, “the deadliest vaccine ever made,” and as recently as during his own presidential campaign, he suggested that the coronavirus might be an “ethnically targeted” bioweapon that preferentially spared Ashkenazi Jews and Chinese people. But the others named for top public health posts, though not transparent cranks, are also Covid contrarians whose most important qualification for these positions are their crusades against the public health establishment during the pandemic period: Stanford’s Jay Bhattacharya to lead the National Institutes of Health, and Johns Hopkins’s Marty Makary to run the Food and Drug Administration. Dave Weldon, Trump’s pick to oversee the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, was a vocal vaccine skeptic long before the pandemic.

WASHINGTON — A former FBI informant whose false claims about President Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden were at "the heart" of the Republican impeachment inquiry against the president has now been indicted on tax charges. Alexander Smirnov, the former FBI informant charged with lying to the FBI about President Joe Biden and his son Hunter, has now been indicted on 10 separate tax-related charges. The charges against Smirnov, who had been a confidential human source for the FBI since 2010, were brought by David Weiss, the special counsel on the Hunter Biden case, which resulted in convictions on gun charges in June and tax charges in September. Before Smirnov was indicted, Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, said his claims were "the heart" of Republicans' impeachment inquiry against the president. Prosecutors said Smirnov was "actively peddling new lies that could impact U.S. elections after meeting with Russian intelligence officials" in Nov. 2023.

An animal rights extremist believed to be behind a pair of bombings in Northern California over two decades ago was caught in Wales on Monday, authorities said. FBI Director Christopher Wray celebrated the capture of Daniel Andreas San Diego, 46, saying on Tuesday the suspect will finally be held "accountable" for his alleged acts of "violence and destruction." He's also accused of sending a "bomb strapped with nails" that went off at a nutritional company, Shaklee Corp., in nearby Pleasanton, on Sept. 26, 2003. The FBI believed that San Diego, who was born in Berkeley, bombed the firms because they had worked with another lab that had conducted animals experiments. “There’s a right way and a wrong way to express your views in our country, and turning to violence and destruction of property is not the right way," Wray added.

Traffic infractions against Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill — which escalated to a tense police confrontation caught on video two months ago — were summarily dismissed on Monday when officers didn't come to court, records showed. Bystanders recorded video of Hill lying face down on the ground as officers placed his hands behind his back and appeared to cuff him. At least two Dolphins teammates, tight end Jonnu Smith and defensive lineman Calais Campbell, were driving by, saw Hill pulled over and stopped to help. All of those Dolphins made it to their Sept. 8 season opener, won by Miami, 20-17, over the visiting Jacksonville Jaguars. “If I wasn’t Tyreek Hill, Lord knows, I probably would have been, like, worst-case scenario, I would have been shot or would have been locked up” and “put behind bars, you know, for a simple speeding ticket,” Hill told NBC News a day after the incident.

I worked on the purchase and rollout of hundreds of millions of vaccines and on developing antiviral treatments. Now I am back at my job teaching at the medical school at the University of California, San Francisco. I have been monitoring the spread of bird flu, also known as H5N1, and discussing the situation with colleagues around the country. At the heart of President-elect Donald J. Trump’s threat on Monday to slap China with new tariffs is a bitterly recurring issue: the flow into the United States of the potent opioid fentanyl, created using chemicals made in China. In September, Chinese officials expanded the list of so-called precursor chemicals used in making the drug, imposing more oversight. It was a rare instance of cooperation from China, which has otherwise stonewalled the United States on issues including nuclear arms control, support for Russia and human rights. China is the main source of chemicals used to make fentanyl, a synthetic opioid that kills tens of thousands of Americans a year. Much of the flow into the United States is from drug cartels in Mexico who mix the precursors and smuggle the finished product across the border.

Barack Obama’s Big Lesson

It remains Barack Obama’s most underrated political skill: his appeal to working-class voters, including those who are white. Obama won most voters without a four-year college degree in his two presidential campaigns. Those majorities helped him win Florida, Iowa, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin in both campaigns. He traveled to the University of Notre Dame as president and said he wanted to reduce the number of abortions. He supported civil unions rather than same-sex marriage when most voters felt similarly.

The shoplifter knew the geography of the big gleaming Target store in TriBeCa as well as he knew his dingy little $20-a-week room uptown. He popped through the sliding front door, where a security guard stood posted. That was how long it would take for the police to respond to the 911 call the security guard would be making right now. The shoplifter, David Andino, clambered down that escalator, hurtling past shoppers heading up. Andino scooped what he could into a laundry bag, seeking out the brands he knew he could easily sell.

With former high-flying gambling stocks struggling so far in the fourth quarter, it's tempting to write off the entire group. MGM is only up about 10% since the August market low, and CZR is slightly above the S & P 500 in terms of performance. Over the same period, we can see that DraftKings Inc (DKNG) is up around 35%, doubling the return of the S & P 500. FLUT has now made a new 12-month relative high, as the strong performance in Q4 has outpaced other gambling stocks as well as the major equity benchmarks. As long as these two gambling stocks continue to demonstrate strong relative strength characteristics, we feel they represent excellent opportunities into year-end 2024.
