Mortgage demand is struggling to contend with what appears to be another upswing in interest rates. Total mortgage application volume rose 3.7% last week compared with the previous week, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association's seasonally adjusted index. Together, those two jumps made for the third-biggest increase in mortgage rates since March 2020. The refinance share of mortgage activity increased to 35.4% of total applications from 34.2% the previous week. Mortgage rates fell back slightly on Tuesday, but the move higher was an adjustment to surprisingly strong economic data, according to Matthew Graham, chief operating officer at Mortgage News Daily.

"The market seems to have gotten excited that the Fed's going to have to do more than what the Fed thinks in terms of rate cuts now. watch nowThere is certainly a wide gap between what the Fed has indicated in terms of rate cuts and what the market is expecting. It probably means that right now, the market needs to give back some of the rate cuts that they priced in." In the final quarter of the year, bitcoin is likely to see continued chop and although there's room for some upside, it may be limited. Despite this, it remains on pace for an 11% decline in the third quarter, historically a weaker quarter for the cryptocurrency. Meanwhile, holding a non-yielding asset like gold or bitcoin could become "less interesting" as rates go higher, Amberdata's Magadini said. There's a significant crowd on both sides, Cox said – "that's why bitcoin is up 60% in a year when the Fed has hiked interest rates so aggressively." The answer to that depends on interest rates, which will probably stay high."

On Wednesday, the Federal Open Market Committee will announce whether it will raise interest rates again or implement a pause. AdvertisementAdvertisementHatzius also said at the NYU forum that "we've seen a very substantial rebalancing of the labor market." "We have seen clear evidence that inflation is moving down to the Fed's target, or strongly in the direction of the Fed's target, without a substantial deterioration in the real economy," Hatzius said. "We're entering a period where consumers are returning to an environment where they're much more dependent on the path of the labor market, on the flow of income creation," Meyer said. Goldman Sachs predicted those events could stunt economic growth — and complicate the Fed's job in the months to come.

It also marks a premium of about 43% to the closing price of Chindata shares before the initial approach was made public. U.S.-listed shares of Chindata, which operates data centers in China, India and Southeast Asia, rose 3% after the bell. Data centers operators have enjoyed a surge in demand in recent years as more businesses take to the web. The go-private deal announced on Friday will be funded through a combination of cash and debt financing provided by Shanghai Pudong Development Bank, Chindata said.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Russia's Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu visit an exhibition of armed equipment on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Korean War armistice in this image released by North Korea's Korean Central News Agency on July 27, 2023. The fact North Korean hackers may have obtained information about the Zircon does not mean they would immediately have that same capability, said Markus Schiller, a Europe-based missile expert who has researched foreign aid to North Korea's missile programme. Last month, North Korea test-launched the Hwasong-18, the first of its ICBMs to use solid propellants. "North Korea announced that it was doing the same thing in late 2021. Thin liquidity and big playersCrypto "market depth" has been sitting at very low levels this year. Market depth is a measure of liquidity in a market. According to data firm Kaiko, bitcoin's market depth has fallen 20% since the start of this year. Low liquidity, which has been a feature of the crypto market all year, is also partly behind bitcoin's 80% year-to-date rally. "I think trading volumes and price volatility are two of the most telling indicators of crypto market activity.

The Bank of England in February removed its explicit guidance and tied decisions to inflation data. The Bank of Japan, by contrast, still battling to raise perennially weak inflation, has left the core part of its guidance intact with a pledge to "patiently" sustain loose policies. The European Central Bank says it has adopted a "meeting-by-meeting" approach with "a strong preference against returning to outright forward guidance on policy rates." If the projections show the policy rate moving up later this year, officials will likely face questions if they do as expected and hold rates steady at the June meeting. If the rate is not seen moving up, they will face questions about not being responsive to recent data showing strong inflation despite pledging to be "data dependent."

The increased expectations that U.S. and global interest rates may have further to rise has come on the back of surprise rate increases by the Bank of Canada (BoC) and the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) this week. The Canadian dollar was last steady at C$1.3365 to the greenback, after rising to a one-month top of C$1.3321 in the previous session. The U.S. dollar index dipped slightly to 104.02, though strayed not too far from an over two-month high hit last week, on the back of higher Treasury yields. Money markets are pricing in a 29% chance that the Fed raises rates by 25bps at its policy meeting next week. "Markets have raised their FOMC rate hike expectations following a surprise Bank of Canada rate hike," said Carol Kong, a currency strategist at Commonwealth Bank of Australia.
