Abuja, Nigeria CNN —Floodwaters that gushed from an overflowing dam in northern Nigeria engulfed a zoo and swept animals including crocodiles and snakes into communities, as the region battles some of the worst flooding in years. A video of an ostrich wading through a flooded road in the capital, Maiduguri, has been widely shared on social media. The flooded yard of Sanda Kyarimi Park Zoo is pictured in Maiduguri on September 10, 2024. Ahmed Kingimi/ReutersA spokesperson for NEMA, Nigeria’s disaster management agency, Manzo Ezekiel, told CNN Wednesday that efforts were being made to recapture the animals. Nigeria’s meteorological agency, NIMET, however, had warned of the risk of flash floods across the country following torrential rains.

The blaze, which began Thursday night east of Los Angeles, has thus far forced at least 6,000 people to evacuate. Pyrocumulus clouds have also been seen around two other major Southern California fires: the Airport Fire in Orange County and the Bridge Fire in Angeles National Forest. On Monday, fire officials said the California National Guard will deploy four Blackhawk helicopters and other aircraft to aid with modular airborne fire fighting systems as well as 80 soldiers. Meanwhile, in Nevada, the Davis Fire is burning about 5,000 acres and stands 0% contained, Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest officials said Monday evening. Red Flag warnings are in place across southern California, including the I-5 corridor and the Los Angeles Metro area.

The Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI), a non-profit with expertise in water governance, has said that even amid a possible rise in social conflicts and violence, "water can be a bridge to peaceful negotiations rather than a trigger or weapon of war." The severity of the global water crisis has been further underlined by an alarming rise in the number of security incidents. Egypt-Ethiopia tensionsVillanova University's Galgano identified nine international river basins as flashpoints in which conflict is either already taking place or the potential for armed conflict is high. The flooding happens because a smaller glacier near Mendenhall Glacier had retreated — a casualty of the warming climate — and left a basin that fills with rainwater and snowmelt each spring and summer. When the water creates enough pressure, it forces its way under or around the ice dam created by the Mendenhall Glacier and enters Mendenhall Lake and eventually the Mendenhall River, as it did this week. On Wednesday, piles of garbage bags and other items — wood, boxes, sodden insulation and carpeting — dotted the curbs. The city said the water reached some homes outside expected flood areas. Her dad woke her up hours later via FaceTime and alerted her to rising water outside.

Now, a team of engineers and geologists brings a new theory to the table — a hydraulic lift device that would have floated the heavy stones up through the middle of Egypt’s oldest pyramid using stored water. Water from ancient streams flowed into a system of trenches and tunnels that surrounded the Step Pyramid, according to the study team. The shaft within the Step Pyramid is connected to a 200-meter-long (656-foot-long) underground tunnel that connects to another vertical shaft outside the pyramid. Conversely, a moderate-sized hydraulic lift can raise 50 to 100 tons. “It doesn’t mean (the hydraulic lift device) wasn’t used,” she added.

Wind turbines provided just 1 percent of the electricity produced in the state in 2001 and nearly 60 percent last year. How Kentucky made electricity from 2001 to 2023 Percentage of power produced from each energy sourceCoal still generates the majority of the electricity produced in Kentucky, a longtime coal mining state. Since then, virtually all of the electricity produced in the state has come from renewable sources, including hydropower, biomass, wind and solar. It has supplied more than 85 percent of the electricity produced in the state every year for more than two decades. Last year, wind supplied more than a fifth of the electricity produced in the state.

Market volatility in Dane County, Wisconsin, a largely Democratic, college-educated part of a solidly purple state, boosted its difficulty score to 78 on NBC News’ index. CNN —The Greek Islands, known for their idyllic towns, rugged landscapes and sun-baked beaches, are in the grip of a serious crisis. “They combine lack of water resources — shallow aquifers, rare rivers or dams — with a tremendous rise in water demand during summer,” he told CNN. Kottakis blamed the crisis on Leros on a failure to maintain the island’s two desalination units, which are both in disrepair. Tourism is “unsustainable and zero-planned,” which is leading to a tremendous rise in water demand, said Mylopoulos, the university professor. Multiple wildfires raged and at least six tourists, including British TV presenter and doctor Michael Moseley and an American tourist, died as high temperatures scorched the Greek islands.

Instead, Biden’s campaign unraveled over the course of the next 24 days. It’s a high-risk, high-reward gamble for Democrats, resetting a campaign Biden was losing with a new nominee just 107 days before the election. Dunn and her husband, Bob Bauer, were among Biden’s debate prep team and had faced the ire of the president’s family in the aftermath of the debate. Several news outlets, including CNN, reported that Pelosi and former President Barack Obama had privately expressed concerns about the future of Biden’s campaign. That same day, ABC News reported that Schumer told Biden in their Saturday meeting that it would be best if he bowed out of the presidential race.

Ever since President Biden’s calamitous debate last month, many Democrats who’ve lost faith in his candidacy have been frozen, fearing mutually assured destruction. The president has had a few good moments in recent weeks, including a great speech in Michigan. It’s time for Democrats who want a new nominee to hold hands and jump. Trekking Across Switzerland, Guided by Locals’ Hand-Drawn Maps Nostalgic for a time before ubiquitous connectivity, a writer ditched his phone and relied instead on serendipity — and maps made by people he met along the way. So perhaps the most difficult day was also the day I knew for sure that I would make it — that I’d find my way across Switzerland with nothing but the hand-drawn maps of strangers. The map I’m using was drawn by Susana, a Portuguese woman who married into a local family and now runs a mountain refuge near the village of Grindelwald. President Joe Biden and congressional Democrats increasingly appear to be on a collision course. As of Monday morning, five House Democrats have publicly called for Biden to step aside, while two have pointedly said that he can't win.
