SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — World leaders, CEOs, protesters and thousands of others will soon descend on San Francisco for a global trade summit that could give the battered city a chance to reverse its image of an economic powerhouse now in decline. As host, San Francisco and the city's partners are polishing sidewalks, scrubbing away graffiti and moving homeless people to accommodations indoors. “It shows that San Francisco isn’t dead,” he said, adding he believes “there's an appetite for things to change” despite negative media narratives. 1 Permian shale producer Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD.N) could further restrain output growth in the largest U.S. oilfield, squeezing pipeline companies and suppliers, executives and energy advisors said. Consolidation, steep cost inflation and investor demands for returns have shrunk production growth this year in the Permian shale formation in West Texas and eastern New Mexico. U.S. oil producers are pumping more oil, but the pace of growth has slowed due to lower drilling activity. Overall, oil companies have cut 36 active drilling rigs in the Permian in the last year, a 10% drop. Recent shale consolidation, including Civitas Resources (CIVI.N) and Callon Petroleum-Percussion (CPE.N), also led to reductions in the combined companies' active drilling rigs.

"We are generally focused on providing support for housing, financial literacy, sustainability, and this is outside our wheelhouse but it is an important issue and deserves attention," Daley said. JPMorgan Chase (JPM.N) runs a similar initiative, Second Chance, to sign up new employees with criminal records. Certain estimates suggest that about a quarter of the U.S. population is left out of the talent pool due to criminal records.

My dad was a successful banker and Army veteran, and he would have been 82 this year. Even though I only got 27 years with my dad, he's still very much alive in my heart. Some of the most memorable things he taught me centered around his favorite topics: family, working hard and being smart about money. My dad always focused on being constructive rather than complaining about things that were beyond his control. By the time I graduated, I had a strong credit score and the ability to open a card with points.

Confirmation of a likely genetic cause for the children’s deaths has implications far beyond Australia for parents who have been accused of killing or harming their babies. The advances in genetic testing used to free Folbigg are giving other families hope that science may explain why their children have died, but experts say sometimes even that can’t exonerate parents – often mothers – accused of harming them. How the science is helping othersOne of the lead authors of the study, Professor Carola Vinuesa, says that Folbigg’s case has encouraged other families and lawyers to come forward, seeking genetic evidence to clear mothers accused of harming their babies. Some mothers accused of injuring their children are seeking a genetic explanation for their symptoms to counter claims of child abuse, she said. “The majority of these mothers have not harmed their children, but the children have these very rare conditions.

June 14 (Reuters) - The former morgue manager at Harvard Medical School was among five people indicted by a grand jury on Wednesday over allegations they stole and sold body parts from cadavers donated to the school, federal prosecutors said. The buyers mostly resold the body parts, prosecutors said. A sixth person was previously charged in Arkansas in the same investigation on suspicion of stealing body parts from a mortuary she worked for, prosecutors said. People whose body parts were sold had volunteered their remains to be used to educate medical professionals, Karam said. The Harvard Medical School cooperated with the investigation, he said.

Two decades ago, Kathleen Folbigg was convicted of smothering all four of her young children. But Ms. Folbigg, who was sentenced to 40 years in prison, insisted she was innocent. On Monday, the attorney general of New South Wales, Michael Daley, announced that Ms. Folbigg, 55, had been given a full pardon and released from prison. “What is the difference between today and what has transpired in the past is that new evidence has come to light,” Mr. Daley said. “It is appropriate that we do have the mechanisms to reconsider the source of questions in light of new evidence.”

Folbigg was jailed in 2003 on three counts of murder and one of manslaughter following the deaths of her four babies over a decade from 1989. As recently as 2019, an inquiry into her convictions found there was no reasonable doubt she had committed the crimes. But another inquiry began last year after new scientific evidence emerged that provided a genetic explanation for the children’s deaths. Examination of the babies’ remains failed to find any physical evidence they’d been suffocated, but without another plausible reasons to explain their deaths, suspicion focused on Folbigg. During Folbigg’s 2003 trial, the prosecution used “coincidence and tendency” evidence to allege that Folbigg had also killed Caleb.

Half a year with the street counselors who dispense free sneakers, monthly injections and gentle encouragement to some of the city’s most vulnerable and volatile residents. It had taken their team almost five months just to track down the 43-year-old homeless woman, chasing leads from the police and other homeless people. On this afternoon last August, they were trying to help her find the holy grail: an apartment where someone with a severe mental illness could build a stable life. The woman, M, flashed them a big smile. In her black baseball cap, long blond wig, oversize sunglasses and about 20 bracelets, she looked like a misplaced movie star.
New York CNN —A line of Chicago mayors heavily courted Walmart over the last two decades, brushing aside community protests. Chains like Dollar General and Family Dollar are expanding in low-income areas, but they don’t sell fresh groceries. Walmart is closing neighborhood markets around the country, and three of the four stores closing in Chicago fall into that category. In Chicago, Walmart is closing in both low-income and high-income areas, a sign that it’s struggling across the city. But it’s the stores in low-income areas that will feel the loss most.
On the night of December 5, the president of the Amazon Labor Union pummeled another union member. Some longtime Amazon Labor Union organizers decided to begin organizing on their own, without Smalls. All three said they believe in Smalls' mission and support the goals of the Amazon Labor Union, but worry about Smalls' ability to lead. Amazon Labor Union members consoled each other after the union lost the vote at its second warehouse, LDJ5, last April. One purpose of the organization appears to be to raise funds for the Amazon Labor Union, according to its certificate of incorporation.
Walmart announced Tuesday that next week it will close four poor-performing stores out of the eight it operates in Chicago. Now, it's closing four Chicago stores. Walmart said its remaining four Chicago stores “continue to face the same business difficulties,” but it believes closing these four will give the others the best chance of staying open. There were fears that Walmart and other businesses would leave Chicago, but Walmart pledged to stay and invest in the city. Some retailers have also cited higher levels of theft and other crime in their city stores.

"Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" hits cinemas from next week hoping to entice a new generation of fans with the game which first came out in 1974. "It made me understand why (Dungeons & Dragons) has been around for 50 years." Page, who plays Xenk, said he played his first Dungeons & Dragons game just before starting filming. Women face a wage gap at every point in their careers, a gap that gets worse as they age and progress through their work lives. This difference in earnings is perhaps the most obvious once women hit their 30s, which is also when the gap begins to widen. Last year, 66% of working women ages 35 to 44 had at least one child at home, compared to just 39% of women ages 45 to 54, Kocchar found. But the explanation for why progress toward narrowing the pay gap stalls once women enter their mid-30s extends beyond the so-called "motherhood penalty." Experiencing early wage discrimination has a "compounding effect" that can hurt women's earnings potential for years to come, she adds.
