Former talk show host Carlos Watson was sentenced Monday to nearly 10 years in prison in a federal financial conspiracy case that cast his once-buzzy Ozy Media as an extreme of fake-it-'til-you-make-it startup culture. So extreme that another Ozy executive impersonated a YouTube executive to hype Ozy to investment bankers — while Watson coached him, prosecutors said. Watson even listened in and texted talking points while his co-founder posed as a YouTube executive to praise Ozy on a phone call with potential investors, prosecutors said. Ozy Media was his second startup, coming a decade after he sold a test-prep company that he had founded while in his 20s. Meanwhile, Ozy gave prospective investors much bigger revenue numbers than those it reported to accountants, according to testimony and documents.

Gold prices inched higher on Monday as investors anticipated a potential interest rate cut by the Federal Reserve this week, with focus on the central bank's language on rate cuts next year. Spot gold was up 0.1% to $2,652.07 per ounce as of 0155 GMT. Investors view it as a near-given that the Fed will cut rates by a quarter point at its Dec. 17-18 meeting. "Over the past month, gold prices have pulled back from the $2,720 level on at least two occasions, which makes it a key resistance for buyers to overcome ahead to pave the way for more upside," Yeap said. Spot silver was flat at $30.54 per ounce, platinum shed 0.3% to $922.05, while palladium gained 0.4% to $956.58.

Although Democrats were wrecked up and down the ballot in Pennsylvania, Casey doesn’t think the party needs to rip up its playbook. In fact, he thinks the factor that will help them the most is not having to face Trump on the ballot again. But obviously, for probably a variety of reasons, President Trump had his strongest performance ever in Pennsylvania of the three races and got about 50%. I don’t think that’s accurate, but that’s the perception that people had, and that if he was able to achieve that once, he could do it again. And at the time, President Trump was very clear about that.

Democrats ended up cleaning up in the Clinton districts and then padding their majority in the Trump districts in 2018. A majority of the Trump/House Democratic districts have a median household income of less than $65,000, which is also below the national median of $78,000. For Republicans, Trump has shifted their coalition to include more working-class voters and voters of color. The targets include some Trump seats that were not on this year’s battlefield, like Michigan’s 4th District, represented by GOP Rep. Bill Huizenga. Republicans, meanwhile, will try to ensure that Trump voters become reliable GOP voters, and some Republicans acknowledged those voters are not in their camp yet.

In a notebook passage, he mused what could be better than “to kill the CEO at his own bean counting conference,” a law enforcement official briefed on the matter told CNN. How the Greenland shark can live for centuries

Avalon.red/Alamy Stock PhotoThe rarely seen Greenland shark is a sluggish creature, slowly swimming through the deep waters of the North Atlantic and Arctic oceans. The polar fish is the only species of shark that can withstand the freezing temperatures year-round. The large sharks also live to be more than 400 years old, and some of them may have been alive since colonial times. The carcass, studied by whale scientists and members of the local Māori community, yielded precious clues about the deep-sea-diving animal.

Bragg's office made the suggestion - one of several about how the case could proceed despite Trump's status as president-elect - in a court filing earlier this week, and acknowledged it was "novel." Prosecutors also offered other ways Merchan could proceed with the criminal case in which Trump was convicted of 34 felony counts of falsifying business records. "As President-elect and the soon-to-be President, there can be no further criminal proceedings against President Trump. The DA's office said Smith relied on guidance regarding federal cases, which is not binding on its case. President-elect Donald Trump has been ordered to spend part of the week before Christmas being grilled by lawyers in his defamation case against ABC News. Trump has thus far not made himself available for a recorded deposition — to the apparent chagrin of the defense team. “I can understand your frustration,” U.S. Magistrate Judge Lisette M. Reid said to Nathan Siegel, the lawyer representing ABC News. Hours after the hearing, Reid issued an order that Trump sit down for an in-person deposition the week of Dec. 16 and that it be limited to four hours. WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court said Friday that it will hear a case related to California's ability to set its own, often strict, vehicle emissions standards that include curbs on greenhouse gases. Due to the size of the California market, the state’s regulations hold considerable sway over vehicle manufacturers. The Obama administration granted California a waiver to regulate greenhouse gas tailpipe emissions but the first Trump administration sought to change course. The most recent EPA waiver, in 2022, prompted 17 Republican states led by Ohio and the business groups to sue. In court papers, Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar pointed out that manufacturers are already meeting the state's standards.

The exotic dancer who once accused three Duke University lacrosse of raping her admitted this week that she invented the 2006 allegations that set off a combustible national conversation about gender, race and class. Mangum and another dancer had been hired to perform at party, thrown by Duke lacrosse players, on March 13, 2006. She claimed that players raped her in blockbuster allegations that touched on hot-button topics such as sex work, race and class. The 46-year-old said she was "searching for validation" when she made up those lies and now hopes the former Duke players can someday accept her apology.
