When discussing immigration, Harris took a shot at Trump's rallies, saying that people leave them early " out of exhaustion and boredom ." Trump responded with his own attack about Harris' rallies, but his demeanor also took a noticeable turn for the remainder of the debate. And while the two candidates basically don't agree on anything, Harris took one page out of Trump's book. The vice president had some noticeable facial expressions during the debate , something the former president has been known for. The Harris campaign said following the debate the vice president would participate in another one in October .

Read previewFormer President Donald Trump's advisors and allies scripted his playbook to attack Vice President Kamala Harris during the debate. Harris baited Trump, starting by distracting Trump from talking about his favorite issue of immigration by getting him stewing about crowd size. Harris talked about how the Wharton School of Finance, Trump's beloved alma mater, has published research questioning his economic plans. He clearly seemed annoyed at the ABC News debate moderators who repeatedly interrupted the debate to fact-check his false claims. Trump's team echoed those claims online, arguing that the former president had to take on Harris, Muir, and co-moderator Linsey Davis.

Trump's team telegraphed that he would repeatedly try to yoke Vice President Kamala Harris to Biden's unpopular record. According to ABC's official transcript, Trump mentioned Biden 14 times by name. But how Trump attacked the president encapsulated his struggles to define Harris since Biden dropped out of the race following his disastrous June debate performance. Trump couldn't even decide how to attack Harris in the context of Biden. Harris felt compelled to remind viewers that the rematch polls showed voters long loathed was in fact not happening.

Our newest ad just dropped pic.twitter.com/DfM044iZ8s — Kamala HQ (@KamalaHQ) September 11, 2024Despite the reputation he forged in GOP primary debates, Trump has struggled in general election faceoffs. Here are the signs that Trump added to his debate loss total. Heading into the debate, Trump held a narrow lead on PolyMarket, a crypto-based betting market that counts election forecaster Nate Silver as one of its advisors. Amid a back and forth with Harris over debates, Trump declared that he wanted three face-offs with her.

New York CNN —The first presidential debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump drew an estimated 67.1 million viewers across 17 television networks, according to Nielsen data. In 2016, a record 84 million tuned in to the first debate between Hillary Clinton and Trump. While fewer Americans watched the debate on television than in previous election years, millions more watched on digital platforms. ABC said the telecast the most-watched debate on any network in at least 16 years and that more than 7 million watched on the various Disney-owned streaming platforms. Hours before the debate, ABC offered to provide DirecTV a free feed of the telecast for a three-hour period.

In mounting an attack against Trump, Harris can pick and choose from a Golden Corral-scale buffet of material. “I suspect there will be some surprises during the debate,” Jason Miller, a Trump campaign spokesman, said Monday while briefing reporters. Will Trump speak more broadly beyond his base? Even when he knocked Biden out of the race in the last debate, Trump didn’t inspire key voting blocs. “He’s going to talk about what he wants.

Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald J. Trump will face off in a televised prime-time matchup on Sept. 10, ABC News said on Thursday, setting up the latest crucial moment in an already unpredictable presidential campaign. The 90-minute debate is expected to be held in Philadelphia, according to two people with knowledge of the plans. In one sense, the announcement maintains the status quo: Mr. Trump agreed months ago to debate President Biden on ABC on that same date. But the Republican nominee wavered on that commitment after Mr. Biden withdrew from the race, arguing that he had not agreed to those terms with Ms. Harris. This year’s previous debate, in June, was perhaps the most consequential in the 64-year history of televised presidential matchups.

New York CNN —ABC News is continuing preparations for an upcoming presidential debate, despite former President Donald Trump saying he won’t consider participating in a debate until the Democratic Party formally chooses its nominee. “Full steam ahead,” an ABC network source told CNN on Friday. I agreed to a debate with Joe Biden,” Trump, the Republican nominee, said on a press call earlier this week. After Biden dropped out and endorsed Harris, Trump suggested the ABC debate should be moved to the right-wing network Fox News. Earlier this week, Fox sent letters to both campaigns offering to host their own presidential debate.
