CNN —Australian police believe they have found the remains of a 12-year-old child reportedly attacked by a crocodile while swimming in a creek in the Northern Territory, they said on Thursday. “This is devastating news for the family, the community and everyone involved in the search,” senior sergeant Erica Gibson said in a statement. A search and rescue operation with community assistance was launched to find the child, and police scoured a large section of the creek by boat, they said on Wednesday. The search team was authorized to “remove the crocodile from the area,” Northern Territory police minister Brent Potter said, according to CNN affiliate 7news. There are more than 100,000 crocodiles – which can grow up to six meters (20 feet) long – in the Northern Territory, though fatal attacks are relatively rare.

Efficiency is a hallmark of any good business, but Tom Loverro, an investor at 44-year-old Bay Area venture capital firm IVP, thinks startup founders should step off the brake pedal. The venture capitalist who rightly predicted a "mass extinction event for startups" over a year ago now says the worst is behind us. "We're on the cusp of a Great Reawakening for startups," Loverro wrote in a LinkedIn post. Given that the cloud software market is stabilizing and venture funding is available again to the best-in-breed startups, Loverro is telling startups with sound unit economics to increase their cash burn to speed up progress.

But these days, we're seeing parents bestow names typically given to girls on their sons. Parents who choose these names think it's better to grow into an adult-sounding name than outgrow a baby-ish name. Names that end in "ai" are easily pronounced in many languages, including indigenous languages, European languages, Japanese, and African languages. But now we're seeing parents embrace that names can be girly but still strong. We're seeing a rise in long, elaborate names but also in shorter, cutesy names for girls.

In the 19th century, Charles Darwin and Jean Baptiste Lamarck suggested that giraffes evolved long necks to help them snatch leaves on trees. A later theory usurped Darwin and Lamarck's, suggesting that male giraffes evolved long necks to fight and compete for female mates. "I realized that the important question was, 'Do males have proportionally longer necks compared to the rest of their body?'" Cavener said this may be the first study to suggest that females, not males, are the reason for giraffes' long necks. That's important not only for understanding giraffe evolution but how male and female giraffes behave differently, which could help with conservation efforts.

Why Do People Make Music?

Music baffled Charles Darwin. He speculated that music evolved as a way to win over potential mates. Some researchers are developing new evolutionary explanations for music. Others maintain that music is a cultural invention, like writing, that did not need natural selection to come into existence. On Wednesday, a team of 75 researchers published a more personal investigation of music.

Now, new research has revealed that there are two distinct species of giant hummingbird in South America — the northern giant hummingbird that lives year-round in the Andes, and the migratory southern giant hummingbird — and they have been evolving separately for millions of years. A southern giant hummingbird is seen flying from its breeding grounds in central Chile. “We wanted to finally solve this mystery.”Designing backpacks for hummingbirdsGiant hummingbirds differ from hundreds of other hummingbird species in many other ways. Read previewThe Marine Corps wants to field better counter-drone capabilities yesterday. Since that is not possible, the service says it's looking to get them to Marines right now, or at least very soon. Over the last five years, the Marine Corps has been improving its counter-drone systems as it looks to reshape the force and compete with near-peer adversaries. US Marines observed targets during a counter-unmanned aircraft system (UAS) range on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. That challenge has only grown, according to officials Tuesday, and the need for the Marine Corps to thwart it is critical.

“If we work with our physiology knowing that women are women and men are men, knowing that women are not small men, then imagine the (health) outcomes,” she said at a 2019 TED talk. Women of all ages should focus on strength training to help reduce risk of dementia, said exercise physiologist and nutrition scientist Dr. Stacy Sims (not shown). Dr. Stacy Sims said women should prioritize eating more protein to support building muscle, especially as bodies age. But if we have that lean mass from strength training, it really helps calm down that rate of change. Drinking something cold right after exercise helps bring that blood back centrally, reduces metabolites and starts the reparation process.

CNN —For much of this season, Liverpool fans had spoken about sending Jürgen Klopp into the sunset with a historic quadruple of trophies. On Wednesday, Liverpool was stunned 2-0 by struggling local rival Everton in the final Merseyside derby of Klopp’s reign, all but ending the team’s hopes of winning a second Premier League title during the German’s tenure.
