NANTERRE, France — Léon Marchand touched the wall to win the men’s 400-meter individual medley, letting out a roar and cementing himself in French athletic history forever. His time of 4:02.95 set a new Olympic record, previously held by Michael Phelps, and earned him the first Olympic gold medal of his career. American Chase Kalisz, the Tokyo gold medalist in the event, failed to qualify for the final earlier on Sunday. It’s deafening in here as Léon Marchand is introduced ahead of the 400 IM final. So has his coach, Bob Bowman, who knows a thing or two about this spotlight having coached Michael Phelps throughout the entirety of his illustrious career.

The women’s 400-meter freestyle race, billed as a rematch between rivals Ariarne Titmus of Australia and Katie Ledecky of the US, was one of the most hotly anticipated contests of the first full day of competition in the Paris Games. Titmus had defeated Ledecky three years ago in Tokyo, handing the American her first ever individual Olympic defeat. While the 400m is not Ledecky’s best race, she finished ahead of Titmus in a semifinal heat. “Ariarne and Summer swam really, really well. Titmus, meanwhile, will race in the 200-meter freestyle and Ledecky will also compete in the 1,500-meter freestyle – another one of her top events.

Follow our Olympics coverage in the lead-up to the Paris Games. The Paris Games will have more programming hours on the NBC broadcast network than any previous Olympics. NBC is upping its celebrity presence for its Olympic coverage in Paris, headlined by Snoop Dogg. “Research shows that it is a challenge to keep viewers after 10 p.m. ET,” NBC Olympics producer Rob Hyland said. The Olympic Games are coming to the French capital and homes have been found for all 32 sporting disciplines. Breaking, the newest Olympic sport, will take place at La Concorde and will share the area with 3x3 basketball, skateboarding and freestyle BMX. It will become the Olympic Stadium for the duration of the Games, welcoming track and field (athletics) and rugby sevens. Olympic tennis will naturally take place here, but its centerpiece – Court Philippe Chatrier – will also play host to boxing bouts. The company abruptly suspended ticket sales for the star's Eras Tour in Paris and Lyon shortly after presales started on Tuesday, leaving thousands of fans hanging.
