SYDNEY, Feb 19 (Reuters) - The death toll from Cyclone Gabrielle in New Zealand climbed to 11 on Sunday as thousands of people remained missing a week after the storm struck the country's North Island. The cyclone hit the North Island's uppermost region on Feb. 12 and tracked down the east coast, inflicting widespread devastation. On Sunday, police said two more people had died in the hard-hit Hawke's Bay area in circumstances related to the cyclone, raising the death toll to 11. Of those, almost 40,000 were in Hawke's Bay, out of a population of about 170,000. Police have sent an extra 100 officers to Hawke's Bay and nearby Tairawhiti, including to isolated areas, and the New Zealand Herald reported roadblocks around a rural Hawke’s Bay village to deter looters.

An aerial photo showing flooding in part of the small New Zealand city of Napier on Wednesday. When wind and rain from Cyclone Gabrielle passed through the small coastal city of Napier on New Zealand’s North Island earlier this week, the storm downed trees and flung branches into the street near Charlotte Glück-Wurm’s home. Although her home wasn’t damaged, by Wednesday afternoon the power was still out, water use was restricted and mobile-phone service was spotty. To prepare food, she and her husband were using an emergency gas cooker.
WELLINGTON, Feb 16 (Reuters) - New Zealand stepped up recovery efforts on Thursday after Cyclone Gabrielle left at least five people dead and displaced 9,000 in the country's most damaging storm in decades. Gabrielle, which hit New Zealand on Sunday before making its way down the east coast of the North Island, cut off entire towns, washed away farms, bridges and livestock, and inundated homes, stranding people on rooftops. Parts of New Zealand's North Island, where about 75% of the country's 5 million residents live, are enduring their second major storm in as many weeks. Meteorological service MetService said Cyclone Gabrielle is now east of the country and continuing to track away from the North Island. The region was hardest hit during Cyclone Bola in 1988, which caused millions of dollars in damage and left seven people dead.
New Zealand declared a national emergency as Cyclone Gabrielle battered the country’s North Island, washed away roads and forced residents to flee to higher ground. More than 225,000 people were without electricity on Tuesday after fallen trees brought down power lines and blocked roads across large parts of the island. Winds of up to 90 miles an hour lifted roofs from houses and blew trees onto homes, while the cyclone dumped almost 8 inches of rain on some areas in just 12 hours.

While New Zealand have not lost a test series at home to England since 2008, Stokes's men have little respect for the record books. If New Zealand have a sliver of hope it may lie in England's trouble with day-night tests. England have lost their last five under the lights and neither James Anderson nor Ollie Robinson have much love for the pink Kookaburra ball. England have not looked back since McCullum and Stokes took charge but the series will be a reminder of where it all began for the Anderson-Stuart Broad pace axis. They kept their spots for the third and final clash in Napier, which England won to seal the series 2-1.

Hundreds of flights were canceled and schools closed as a cyclone bore down on Auckland on Monday, two weeks after New Zealand’s largest city experienced severe flooding caused by torrential rain. Thousands of properties lost power and many train services were halted as meteorologists forecast up to 8 inches of rain for the city from Monday through Tuesday’s early hours. Authorities warned of potential landslips, with ground across the region still waterlogged after the wettest January since records began.

Residents of New Zealand's biggest city were urged on Sunday to prepare for the impact of a storm that buffeted Australia's Norfolk Island overnight. Gabrielle, downgraded to a sub-tropical low pressure system from a Category 2 cyclone, passed over Norfolk Island, its "most destructive winds" missing the island, the Australian outpost's emergency management authority said. Wind and rain were "starting to spread across NZ from the north", with a 133 kph (83 mph) wind gust reported overnight on the country's North Island, MetService said. The storm was on track to lie off Cape Reinga at the North Island's north end on Sunday afternoon, after moving away from Norfolk Island, MetService said. "There is still considerable clean up to be undertaken and it may take a while for services such as power to be restored," Emergency Management Norfolk Island said.
WELLINGTON, Feb 13 (Reuters) - More than 30,000 homes were without power in New Zealand's upper North Island on Monday as Auckland and nearby regions were hit by strong winds, heavy rain and huge swells as cyclone Gabrielle nears. Gabrielle hit Norfolk Island on Saturday night, with its most destructive winds missing the island, and is now sitting just north of New Zealand with weather forecasters expecting it to intensify as it nears land during Monday and Tuesday. Many schools and council facilities across Auckland and the upper North Island have closed and people are being asked not to travel if possible. Last month Auckland was hit by record rainfall that sparked floods and killed four people. The New Zealand Defence Force has located staff across Auckland and neighbouring regions and they are bringing in welfare stores to civil defence centres and shelters.
SYDNEY, Feb 12 (Reuters) - Residents of Australia's Norfolk Island were cleaning up on Sunday after Cyclone Gabrielle, headed to New Zealand, on Saturday battered the tiny external territory in the Pacific Ocean. Gabrielle, now downgraded to a sub-tropical low pressure system, passed over Norfolk Island Saturday night with the storm's "most destructive winds" missing the island, the Australian outpost's emergency management authority said. In New Zealand, 1,460 kilometres (907 miles) to the south, the nation's weather forecaster warned of the storm's impact from Sunday. Air New Zealand said Saturday it was cancelling several North Island flights scheduled from Sunday to Tuesday ahead of the expected arrival of bad weather. SYDNEY, Feb 11 (Reuters) - Cyclone Gabrielle, headed for New Zealand, brought destructive winds to Australia's Norfolk Island on Saturday as it continued to track towards the tiny external territory in the Pacific Ocean. Gabrielle, a Category 2 tropical cyclone with winds of up 155 kilometres per hour (96 mph), was 325 km (miles) northwest of Norfolk Island, where conditions were deteriorating, Australia's weather bureau said early on Saturday. "The community are doing the right thing and we're in as good a place as we can be," Norfolk Island Administrator Eric Hutchinson told ABC television. The country's weather forecaster, MetService, said it expected Gabrielle to move towards New Zealand in coming days. Last month, Auckland and parts of the North Island were hit by record rainfall that sparked widespread floods and killed four people.
REUTERS/David GraySYDNEY, Feb 10 (Reuters) - Residents in Australia's Norfolk Island and in New Zealand braced for heavy rain and gales over the weekend from Cyclone Gabrielle, with authorities also warning of hazardous surf conditions and strong winds along Australia's east coast. "It is looking like making a direct hit at Norfolk Island," Australia Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Jonathan Howe told ABC television. "We might see the centre of the tropical cyclone pass directly over Norfolk Island." Norfolk Island, an Australian territory 1,500 km (930 miles) east of Sydney, covers just over 34 square km (13 square miles) in the Pacific Ocean, between New Caledonia and New Zealand. Australia's mainland will not be significantly impacted though some eastern coastal areas may experience large waves and strong winds.
Auckland Emergency Management said it was working with MetService, the meteorological agency, to track the storm, dubbed Cyclone Gabrielle. Gabrielle is sitting in the Coral Sea but is forecast to track south toward Aoetearoa, New Zealand, over the next few days and near the North Island on Monday. New Zealand weather forecaster WeatherWatch.co.nz said the cyclone, which will most likely become a Category 3 cyclone this weekend, will reach the country between Sunday and Tuesday. It added that the potential weather event would be concerning even if had Auckland not recently experienced serious flooding. Roughly one cyclone makes affects New Zealand each year.
