In the two and a half years since he resigned as New York’s governor, Andrew M. Cuomo has spent countless hours and millions of dollars to restore his image and vanquish his critics. One of his primary targets is the state’s new ethics panel, which his lawyers argue was formed unconstitutionally and should be disbanded — a result that would plunge the enforcement of state ethics rules into chaos. Mr. Cuomo won the fight’s first round, successfully persuading a State Supreme Court judge last year that the panel, the Commission on Ethics and Lobbying In Government, had been created in a way that violated New York’s Constitution. After the commission appealed the ruling, the parties wound up in an appeals court in Albany, N.Y., on Friday for oral arguments.

But as the special election to succeed the disgraced former congressman has made painfully clear to Democrats, Santos’ victory was not a fluke or anomaly. (Less so 40 years ago, when Republicans ran roughshod here and Ronald Reagan alluded to Nassau County as a Republican’s idea of heaven.) Nassau County in 2024 is sharply divided and – in a word – angry. The year before, Democrat Laura Curran, the top official in Nassau County, was ousted by Republican Bruce Blakeman. But more liberal New York Democrats often point to the current problems as Cuomo’s legacy.

CNN —The Justice Department concluded Friday that former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo sexually harassed state employees, supporting the findings of a previous state civil review of allegations against the former governor. The department reached an agreement with the New York State Executive Chamber resolving the claims of sexual harassment and retaliation against the Democratic former governor, according to a release from the Justice Department on Friday. “Governor Cuomo repeatedly subjected these female employees to unwelcome, non-consensual sexual contact; ogling; unwelcome sexual comments; gender-based nicknames; comments on their physical appearances; and/or preferential treatment based on their physical appearances,” the Justice Department found. In August 2021, the New York attorney general’s office found that Cuomo had sexually harassed 11 women and created a “hostile” work environment for women.

Andrew Cuomo subjected at least 13 women to a "sexually hostile work environment" while he was in office, the Department of Justice said Friday as part of an agreement with the state's current executive office. Cuomo's office instead worked to protect the then-governor from further accusations — and his senior staff retaliated against four of the women he harassed, the DOJ said. Cuomo attorney Rita Glavin in a statement to CNBC said the former governor "did not sexually harass anyone." That report, released Aug. 3, 2021, found that Cuomo sexually harassed at least 11 women and retaliated against at least one former employee who came forward to accuse him. The DOJ said the agreement with the State of New York Executive Chamber, currently led by Gov.

Andrew Cuomo sued New York Attorney General Letitia James in state court on Thursday. Cuomo is asking that interviews from James's 2021 sexual harassment report be released. Andrew Cuomo is suing state Attorney General Letitia James in an effort to force her to release interviews from the damaging sexual misconduct investigation that led to his resignation. He and his backers have repeatedly criticized James and the sexual misconduct investigation as unfair. In September 2022, Cuomo filed a 48-page complaint with the state's Attorney Grievance Committee, asking that the courts investigate James.

Roughly six years ago, as the #MeToo movement gathered steam, a credible allegation of sexual misconduct could end a political career. A Democratic colleague in the House, John Conyers of Michigan, was forced out days earlier. Three Republican congressmen also stepped down: Blake Farenthold of Texas, Trent Franks of Arizona, and Pat Meehan of Pennsylvania. The potency of a #MeToo allegation remained as recently as 2021, when Andrew Cuomo resigned as governor of New York after he faced multiple accusations of sexual harassment. But in New York, recent developments suggest that there may be a subtle re-evaluation of those accused of sexual harassment or abuse, and whether their political lives might be resuscitated.

Launched in 2021 as a fully fledged news network, NewsNation has struggled to make a mark in the crowded cable-news landscape, trailing behind the more established brands despite high-profile hires such as former CNN host Chris Cuomo. Adding to its challenges, the overall audience for cable TV keeps shrinking every year amid cord-cutting.

Voters will not have a say in choosing the nominees; under New York’s special election rules, they will be selected by the county party leaders. The special election in what is now a battleground district is already being discussed as a key bellwether ahead of the November general election. “House Majority PAC plans to play a significant role in the NY-03 special election,” Mike Smith, its president, told CNN. In this case, those people are Jacobs, who also runs the Nassau County Democrats, and Rep. Gregory Meeks, the Queens County Democratic Party chairman. In the year since a one-time window opened in New York State allowing people to file sex-abuse lawsuits even after the statute of limitations had expired, more than 3,000 civil suits have been filed. Before the deadline on Thanksgiving, a flurry of attention-grabbing suits were filed against politicians — like former Gov. At least 479 suits contain charges of abuse at Rikers Island. As the legislation to allow the civil suits, known as the Adult Survivors Act, approached its sunset date, the number of lawsuits filed — both in State Supreme Court and in the Court of Claims — steadily increased after a campaign to alert people to the deadline. The number of cases filed in State Supreme Court alone rose from 803 on Oct. 31 to 1,397 as of Nov. 22.

Andrew Cuomo is being sued by a former aide who says Cuomo sexually harassed her while he was still in office. Cuomo's former executive assistant Brittany Commisso filed the case against the ex-governor in state Supreme Court in Albany on Wednesday. Commisso was one of at least 11 women who accused Cuomo of sexual misconduct, leading to his abrupt 2021 resignation in a #MeToo-era scandal that marked a severe fall from grace for the Democrat. Commisso's lawsuit alleges sexual harassment and unwanted touching from Cuomo and said she was punished for reporting the incidents. The Adult Survivors Act has cleared the way for a wave of lawsuits against famous men accused of sexual misconduct, with a slew of cases coming in the final weeks before it was set to expire.

CNN —A former aide to ex-New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who previously claimed Cuomo groped her breast, is filing a lawsuit against him alleging sexual harassment and abuse, according to a summons filed this week. Commisso’s claims are provably false, which is why the Albany District Attorney dismissed the case two years ago after a thorough investigation,” Cuomo attorney Rita Glavin told CNN in a statement. The report triggered the eventual resignation of Cuomo, which he announced on August 10, 2021, a week after it was released. According to the state’s report, Commisso told investigators Cuomo grabbed her buttocks during hugs and a photo. The lawsuit, filed Friday, accuses Sen. Kevin Parker of assaulting her in 2004, during his first term. For years, a Native American tribe from the picturesque East End of Long Island has fought bitterly for formal state recognition, a designation that was stripped away more than a century ago by court decisions that are now widely considered racist. The New York State Legislature passed a bill four times in a decade to recognize the tribe, the Montaukett Indian Nation, but the legislation was vetoed each time — the first three occasions by Andrew M. Cuomo, and the last by Gov. The bill was written differently, and there were signs that Ms. Hochul might be receptive: She recently named an enrolled member of the Chickasaw Nation, Elizabeth Rule, as the state’s deputy secretary for First Nations. But on Friday, the Montauketts learned that their battle must continue. Ms. Hochul vetoed the legislation, saying that she did not see sufficient evidence to overturn the century-old ruling that the tribe “no longer functioned as a governmental unit” in New York.

It represents the latest case to come before the Supreme Court involving the NRA, a group closely aligned with Republicans that has opposed gun control measures and backed pivotal lawsuits that have widened U.S. gun rights. The NRA was founded in New York in 1871 and was incorporated as a non-profit in the state. At issue was whether Vullo wielded her regulatory power to coerce New York financial institutions into cutting ties with the NRA in violation of its free speech rights under the First Amendment. Circuit Court of Appeals in 2022 said those also should have been dismissed, prompting the NRA's appeal to the Supreme Court. The NRA has been engaged in an extensive legal fight with the state of New York separate from the case involving Vullo.
