LONDON, Jan 23 (Reuters) - Britain's Crown Estate, an independent commercial business that manages the property portfolio belonging to the monarchy, said on Monday it had begun court proceedings against Twitter over alleged unpaid rent on its London headquarters. Court lists showed the case against Twitter had been filed at the High Court in London last week. In a statement, the Crown Estate, which owns some of the most expensive land in central London, said the action related to "rental arrears" on the social media platform's office space in the British capital. In London, the office was left deserted and any evidence that Twitter had once occupied the building were erased. LONDON, Jan 19 (Reuters) - Britain's Crown Estate will lease sites for six offshore wind projects capable of generating enough green electricity to power more than seven million homes by 2030 under agreements announced on Thursday. The Crown Estate, which oversees the British monarch's public holdings, manages the seabed around England, Wales and Northern Ireland and awards seabed rights for the development of offshore wind, wave and tidal energy. Germany's RWE (RWEG.DE) said it was one of the companies that had signed a lease agreement with the Crown Estate. Gus Jaspert, managing director in charge of marine at the Crown Estate, said the deal "marks a significant milestone for the UK on the road to net zero". The offshore wind market has grown to become the largest source of renewable electricity in the UK, the Crown Estate said, currently able to power approximately 40% of UK homes.

REUTERS/Russell Cheyne/File PhotoLONDON, Jan 19 (Reuters) - King Charles told the British government he would like an expected surge in profit from a 900 million pound ($1.1 billion)-a-year wind farm deal for his Crown Estate to go to the "wider public good" rather than to the royal family. Under agreements announced on Thursday, the Crown Estate will lease sites for six new offshore wind projects that are capable of generating enough green electricity to power more than seven million homes by 2030. It is based on 15% of surplus revenue from the Crown Estate - a property portfolio belonging to the monarchy. Sharing the wind farm windfall would happen through "an appropriate reduction" in the proportion of the Crown Estate surplus that funds the Sovereign Grant.
The Crown Estate owns properties worth $17.6 billion, including farmland and seabeds. It also owns retail parks with stores including McDonald's, Starbucks, KFC, and Victoria's Secret. The Crown Estate, which generates profits for the UK Treasury, is owned by the reigning monarch and control was passed down from Queen Elizabeth II to King Charles III upon her death in September. Lingerie and sex-toy shop Ann Summers also has a store at the Westgate shopping mall in Oxford, as does Victoria's Secret. Regent Street in central London, which is owned by the Crown Estate.

Dan Kitwood | Getty Images News | Getty ImagesLONDON — Britain's new Prime Minister Rishi Sunak made history as the country's first leader of color and its youngest in recent centuries, taking office aged just 42. He also breaks the record for being the wealthiest-ever occupant of Downing Street — with a fortune estimated to exceed that of King Charles III. A net worth of $844 millionTogether, the couple has an estimated fortune of £730 million ($844 million), according to the Sunday Times Rich List. King Charles III welcomes Rishi Sunak during an audience at Buckingham Palace, London, where he invited the newly elected leader of the Conservative Party to become Prime Minister and form a new government.
But whatever your feelings toward Elizabeth, it’s clear that the institution of the British monarchy is far from benevolent. Meanwhile, the exact worth of the British monarchy is very difficult to calculate. The Sunday Times' Rich List calculated the queen’s personal net worth as 370 million pounds (more than $420 million), while the author and royal expert David McClure estimated it at 400 million pounds (around $460 million). In 2021-2022, the royal household’s financial report calculated this as 86.3 million pounds ($98.5 million). (According to the BBC, this portfolio generates around 20 million pounds a year in profits.)
The Crown Estate's income goes to the UK government, which gives the royal family an annual payment. The assets of the Crown Estate are worth about $17 billion. The Crown Estate is a collection of property and other holdings belonging to, but not managed by, the monarch. While the King technically owns the Crown Estate by virtue of being on the throne, he is not involved in its management. The Crown Estate's portfolio also includes parts of the shoreline and seabed, forests, farms and the Windsor Estate.
The line of succession makes Prince William, now the first in line to the British throne, a much wealthier man. Created in 1337 by King Edward III, the estate is worth around £1 billion ($1.2 billion), according to its accounts for the last financial year. From that, the UK Treasury paid the Queen a Sovereign Grant of £86 million ($100 million). The Sovereign Grant is usually equivalent to 15% of the estate's profits. Income from its investments cover official costs not met by the Sovereign Grant, and helps support other Royal family members.
King Charles has inherited the Duchy of Lancaster estate valued at more than $750 million. He will not have to pay inheritance tax on the estate due to a rule approved in 1993. The provision was first exercised in 2002 when the Queen Mother passed on an estate worth about $80 million to the Queen including a collection of Faberge eggs. The Lancaster estate generated revenue of £24 million ($27 million) last year, its financial records state, and the King is now entitled to its income. It had assets worth more than £650 million ($754 million) at the end of March this year, the duchy's website states.
