Jalen Milroe and the Alabama Crimson Tide won the SEC Championship. Photo: Todd Kirkland/Getty ImagesATLANTA—Heading into this week’s conference championship matchups, the College Football Playoff Selection Committee looked like it could take the weekend off. The top four teams in the nation—Georgia, Michigan, Washington and Florida State—were all Power 5 schools with perfect records. Win one more game, and the final four would pick itself. Then Nick Saban’s Alabama marched into Atlanta and plunged the entire sport into chaos.

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — Top-seeded Michigan will face Southeastern Conference champion Alabama in the College Football Playoff semifinal to be played as the 110th edition of the Rose Bowl Game. The Wolverines will be playing in their 21st Rose Bowl, more than any school except USC, but Michigan hasn't been to the Granddaddy of Them All since 2007. Michigan's fans hope the Rose Bowl berth is the penultimate step in a tumultuous season featuring incredible play, but also two suspensions for Harbaugh. Alabama returned to the CFP and earned its eighth appearance in the Rose Bowl by ending the Bulldogs' 29-game winning streak. Alabama's previous Rose Bowl Game appearance was in 1946, although Nick Saban's Crimson Tide also won the national championship at the Rose Bowl in January 2010 when they beat Texas in the BCS title game.

This is the college football season when some very un-Alabama things happened to Alabama. It started when the Crimson Tide lost a game in September. Things got worse when they rotated through three quarterbacks before finally naming a starter. They needed a second-half comeback to squeak past South Florida and then a miracle to win the Iron Bowl. The whole thing was deeply weird and unsettling, like Nick Saban cracking a smile.

ATLANTA (AP) — The Southeastern Conference is the only league to claim a spot — sometimes two spots — in every College Football Playoff. 1 Georgia in the SEC championship game Saturday. The Pac-12 appears assured of a playoff team in its swan song of a season with No. Should Texas win — and Alabama beat Georgia — the Horns would certainly have a pretty good case for a playoff spot. “I’ll also point candidly to the realities when the SEC teams have entered the College Football Playoff format, our success is unparalleled,” Sankey said.

Carson Beck and Jalen Milroe had to replace big-name quarterbacks at programs with national title-or-bust expectations. His turning point may have come in the SEC opener against South Carolina, when Beck rallied Georgia from a 14-3 halftime deficit to win 24-14. And Milroe has done something even Young couldn't do last season: lead the Tide to the SEC title game. Then Milroe was back, leading the Tide to a perfect SEC season and making their biggest play in the Iron Bowl. Besides the similarities of replacing star passers, Beck and Milroe share another common ground.

The back door to the College Football playoff is unlikely to be open for Ohio State or anybody else this championship weekend. And the Crimson Tide stayed in CFP contention as they prepare for the Southeastern Conference championship game against No. 20 Iowa in the Big Ten championship game away from a third straight playoff appearance. In the final season before playoff expansion to 12 teams, cutting the field to four might be tricky. ... Don't be surprised if most teams with openings are not willing to wait another week for coaches involved in conference championship games.
