Private credit players like HPS Investment Partners and Blue Owl Capital (OWL.N) have a workaround, but it could prompt a painful hangover. In 2021, that dynamic meant private loans briefly became cheaper than liquid, tradable loans – flying in the face of financial orthodoxy.

So it's no wonder that through the past couple of years, working on and around private credit deals has become Wall Street's career du jour. Private credit is most often floating-rate debt — that is, debt where interest rates rise in concert with rate hikes. 'Unheard of' salaries, while risks abound in the marketIt's worth noting what private credit is: we're talking about debt and loans. "For most of my career, attracting new attorneys to private credit was a challenge. Proskauer's private credit group now has 90 lawyers, 24 of whom are partners, working full-time on private credit.

DUBAI, Sept 11 (Reuters) - Abu Dhabi state fund Mubadala Investment Company has committed $1 billion to U.S.-based Blue Owl Capital's credit platform under a strategic partnership announced by the two companies on Monday. The investment will initially focus on providing financing for technology companies, Mubadala and Blue Owl said in a statement. Blue Owl is an alternative investment manager with $150 billion in assets under management. Private credit funds are increasingly competing with banks, including for financing large company buyouts. I would advise that for the next maybe one year, the credit space would be an interesting space to deploy some investment," al-Mahmoud said at the time.

Fundraising and deal-making have dropped sharply at European private debt funds, new data shows. Faisal Ramzan, a partner at law firm Proskauer Rose who advises private credit funds, said he was not seeing default. "There's plenty of dry powder," said Fidelity International's head of private credit strategies Michael Curtis, referring to capital raised already. Joanna Layton, managing director of European private credit at Alcentra, one of Europe's largest private debt managers, added there was "no rush" to deploy capital. High rates have also made private credit less appealing to institutional investors, analysts said.

The company logo for Financial broker Charles Schwab is displayed at a location in the financial district in New York, U.S., March 20, 2023. The announcement led to a 5% fall in Schwab shares on Tuesday but did not hurt investor appetite for its new bonds. "The strong response shows bond investors, at least in the near term, have gotten over their worries about the credit fundamentals of top-tier regional banks after the banking crisis in March," said Richard Wolff, head of U.S. syndicate at Societe Generale (SOGN.PA). Schwab's bond trade also drew attention as new investment grade bond supply this month has so far been lower than expected. Counting Schwab's $2.35 billion in bonds, investment-grade bond volume sits at just $3.45 billion for the week and $67.1 billion so far in August, according to Informa Global Markets data.

The company established the Allianz Global Diversified Private Debt Fund (AGDPDF) II in Luxembourg in mid-June, company filings show. Private credit funds are increasingly competing with banks, including for financing large company buyouts. The fastest escalation in borrowing costs in decades has posed a test for private credit but so far defaults by borrowers have been limited. 10-year Treasury yields are surging as the economy stays hot. For the first time since 2007, 10-year yields rose above 4.3% on Thursday after seeing a 31% surge since April. If or when that eventually happens, Treasury yields are likely to follow, presenting those who hold the assets with an opportunity. Bond yields fall when demand for the assets rise, pushing up their price. David Kelly, the chief global strategist at J.P. REUTERS/Andrew Kelly/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsAug 17 (Reuters) - Wall Street's top regulator is set next week to adopt new transparency rules for the $20-trillion private investment fund industry, according to an official notice, acting on a proposal that has drawn sharp industry objections. In early 2022, the SEC proposed a set of changes for private fund advisers that would, among other things, require them to produce quarterly statements on performance and fees and submit to annual audits. Under current rules, some broker-dealers who perform proprietary trades on exchanges of which they aren't members need not join FINRA. The proposal would now require FINRA membership for such broker-dealers unless they are members of national securities exchanges and carry no customer accounts.

REUTERS/Issei Kato/File photoNEW YORK, Aug 2 (Reuters) - Private equity firm Carlyle Group Inc (CG.O) reported on Wednesday that its second quarter distributable earnings fell 26% year-on-year due to a slump in asset sales, although the result still exceeded analyst expectations. Distributable earnings, which represents the cash used to pay dividends to shareholders, fell to $388.8 million from $528.8 million a year earlier. That translated to after-tax distributable earnings per share of 88 cents, which surpassed the average estimate of 67 cents, according to Refinitiv data. Carlyle's corporate private equity and real estate funds gained 1% during the quarter, while its credit funds appreciated by 2%. By contrast, Blackstone's corporate private equity funds appreciated by 3.5% and its private credit funds rose 3.3%, while opportunistic real estate funds were flat.

LONDON, July 20 (Reuters) - The European Union said on Thursday it has reached a deal on revising its rules for managers of hedge funds and other alternative investments, easing industry fears of a post-Brexit crackdown on managers in London. Representatives of EU states and the European Parliament reached the deal overnight to update the bloc's Alternative Investment Fund Managers Directive (AIFMD) rules that cover investments in hedge funds, private equity, private debt funds and real estate funds. Under the agreement, European asset managers will have to disclose more details to regulators about their investments with private funds in the United States, Britain and other non-EU countries. But it stops short of toughening up "delegation" rules for managers outside the EU that pick assets for funds listed in the bloc. The agreement includes new rules on funds that issue new loans, including higher requirements to keep money aside to cope with liquidity demands in stressed markets.

Private lenders, meanwhile, had "significant liquidity" to deploy for such financings, proving to be a right fit. Besides property developers, borrowers thronging private markets include privately-held companies and start-ups whose private equity issuance has been stymied by broader stock market swings and the deepening discounts of their valuations, known as a 'down round' in the industry. Investment firm Muzinich & Co. recently announced it had closed a $500 million Asia Pacific private debt strategy. Australian superannuation fund UniSuper, which runs a $15 billion private markets portfolio investing in unlisted infrastructure and private equity, is looking to grow its portfolio. NEW YORK, July 20 (Reuters) - Blackstone Inc (BX.N) said on Thursday its second-quarter distributable earnings slumped nearly 40%, owing to a sharp drop in asset sales mostly from its real estate and credit businesses. Distributable earnings, which represent cash used to pay dividends to shareholders, fell to $1.2 billion from nearly $2 billion a year earlier. A major share of the reduced asset disposals came from Blackstone's real estate unit, where its net profit sank 94%, while that of its credit division dropped 46%. Its private credit funds gained 3.3% while hedge fund assets grew 1.9%. Opportunistic real estate funds were flat.

The hectic pace of activity comes after private credit funds targeting Asia jumped 76% last year to a record $11.2 billion, driven by both regional and India-dedicated strategies, according to Global Private Capital Association. As large global sponsors continue to invest into multi-billion dollar Asia-focused credit funds such as Apollo, Blackstone and KKR, the Asian private credit industry is set for further boom, Robert Wright, partner in law firm Baker McKenzie, said. The string of new private credit funds come against the backdrop of startups facing the threat of having down rounds. Nevertheless, alternative financing such as private credit does not come cheap, industry experts warned. Private credit firms usually arrange loans, with assets secured, on a floating rate basis.

Private credit goes Hollywood. A town that loves a good story has a leading role in the biggest one on Wall Street. So in that vein, private credit filling the gap left by banks reconsidering their lending decisions is great. Ratings agency Moody's has already raised the alarm, suggesting defaults among borrowers in private credit will rise. But I think it's fair to say that industry isn't as cut and dried as others private credit might be lending to.

MUMBAI, June 27 (Reuters) - Goswami Infratech, a Shapoorji Pallonji group entity, closed India's largest debt issue from a low-rated company on Tuesday, signalling growing interest in high-yielding debt from local and global private credit funds, bankers and fund managers said. Goswami Infratech accepted bids worth 143 billion rupees ($1.74 billion), including from Edelweiss Special Opportunities Fund, Davidson Kempner, Ares Capital Management, Varde Partners and Cerberus Capital Management, the bankers said. "We are seeing money coming in from global asset managers, international development financial institutions and large pension funds in Indian private credit funds," said Vineet Sukumar, founder of Vivriti Asset Management, which also manages a private credit fund. Two recent changes in regulation have also provided a boost to private credit funds. The tweaks have led to more funds from high net worth individuals and family offices flowing into private credit funds, while elevated yields are further leading to attractive investment opportunities.

Private credit is an alternative asset class consisting of loans privately negotiated outside of the public debt markets. Examples of private credit include student loans taken from outside the government, small-business loans, and consumer loans.
