15 Looks That Did the Most at the Emmys
  + stars: | 2024-01-15 | by ( The Styles Desk | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
After being postponed because of labor strikes in Hollywood, the Emmy Awards returned on Monday night and with the ceremony came what might be the television industry’s biggest fashion show. Though the carpet was gray, there was no shortage of red, a color that also proved quite popular at the Golden Globes this month. (Ms. Waterhouse’s sat beneath her baby bump.) The ceremony was honoring television programs broadcast last year, which gave viewers a chance to catch up with casts like that of “White Lotus” season two. Amid a carpet full of feathers, beads, sequins, diamonds and plenty of well-tailored suits, the following 15 outfits stood out from the rest (for better or worse).

"Netflix missed their numbers, and Wall Street woke up," said Paul Hardart, director of NYU Stern's entertainment, media and technology program. A wide range of companies and employees were impacted, from entertainment giants to independent production companies to Hollywood talent agencies. More consolidation among the legacy media companies and independent production companies is widely expected, which often entails job cuts. New York CNN —Martinis and margaritas might still be people’s drink of choice, but the spritz is bubbling to the top. Bartenders are experimenting so much with the spritz, swapping in different liqueurs or juices in place of Campari or Aperol, that it’s becoming the “cocktail for the moment” and expanding its appeal year-round, a recent report from bar analytics service Union said. “By all accounts, the spritz has had a smashing year, showing strong growth across every month, peaking smack-dab in the middle of summer,” Union said. Data shows that spritz sales started growing in sales this year a month earlier — in April — than usual. Former Vice President Mike Pence has qualified for the first Republican presidential primary debate set for later this month, his White House campaign said Tuesday. Pence joins at least half a dozen other candidates who have already clinched spots on the debate stage, including Florida Gov. "Hopefully, former President Trump has the courage to show up," O'Malley said. For lower-polling candidates — a bucket that could include everyone except for Trump and DeSantis — a breakout debate performance could be critical. Asa Hutchinson said last week that his campaign is "close to halfway" toward the donor threshold.

The company said retail sales of its trucks doubled to 66 in the quarter, while wholesale figure rose to 45 from 31. They fell before the bell after the company announced on Monday it would start liquidating assets of Romeo Power less than a year after buying the battery maker. Nikola agreed to buy Romeo Power in August for about $144 million, as it looked to jump-start efforts to make battery packs. EV makers Tesla (TSLA.O) and Rivian (RIVN.O) also beat market estimates for second-quarter deliveries. Nikola, which went public in 2020, produced 33 trucks during the second quarter, compared with 63 trucks in the preceding quarter.

The pilot episode of “The Bear,” FX’s frenetic series about a high-end chef who takes over his family’s blue-collar sandwich shop, opens with an unsettling image. The man swings the door open wide and confronts a great, angry bear. At first, he tries to soothe the beast, whispering, “I know.” But the bear lunges at him. The bear is grief. The kind of trauma that grief imposes has become a popular subject on buzzy TV shows.

Electric-truck maker Nikola laying off 270 employees

Companies Nikola Corp FollowJune 16 (Reuters) - Nikola (NKLA.O) said on Friday it would lay off a total of 270 employees, as the electric-truck maker looks to cut costs and sharpen its focus on the North American marketplace. Of the 270 employees impacted, 150 were supporting Nikola's European operations and 120 were based at its sites in Phoenix and Coolidge. The decision would help Nikola reduce personnel-related cash spend by $50 million annually, the company said. Annual cash usage for the company was expected to decrease to under $400 million by 2024, Nikola added. Investors have been closely scrutinizing cash reserves at Nikola and other electric-vehicle makers amid fears slowing sales could push the companies to pursue more share disposals to raise funds.

President Joe Biden plans to use his remarks Saturday at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner to address press freedoms and the detainment of American journalists. At the 2022 dinner, Biden spoke for just under 15 minutes, cracking jokes at himself and the media. The history of the famed dinner stretches back to 1914, when the White House Correspondents' Association was established. Trump skipped all of the White House correspondents' dinners during his term. After comedian Michelle Wolf delivered a blistering 2018 dinner routine taking aim at the Trump administration, Trump tweeted that "the White House Correspondents' Dinner is DEAD as we know it."

The outfits at Time’s 100 Most Influential People in the World gala, held last night at Jazz at Lincoln Center, generally don’t involve as much forethought, but it is nevertheless an opulent affair. Tiffany Haddish wore a red and black sequined gown and Natasha Lyonne was in a black Area dress with a bedazzled oyster bodice. The storied masquerade party and annual gala dinner raises money to preserve the artworks of the flood-threatened Italian city. The event raised $1.2 million and transformed the Plaza into an arms-in-the-air dance party with the D.J.

Bell will be overseeing a new cybersecurity division at Microsoft — but insiders at both Amazon and Microsoft wonder if he'll go more directly up against his former employer. My colleague Ashley Stewart examines the growing threat of Microsoft now that Bell is free from his noncompete purgatory. Nicolas Cage, Ranked From Wild to Mild
  + stars: | 2023-04-26 | by ( Erik Piepenburg | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
In the early 1980s, Nicolas Cage got his first big breaks in Martha Coolidge’s “Valley Girl” and Amy Heckerling’s “Fast Times at Ridgemont High,” films that zeroed in on the peculiar allure of his dopey bad boy persona. Watching him was like eating a banana split: You tasted something nutty, sweet, indulgent, all-American. Since then, few actors have been able to match how nimble a polymorph Cage is in genre, how easily he power-bounces between action (“National Treasure”), comedy (“Moonstruck”) and horror (“Pay the Ghost”). He’s done the same for a who’s who of boundary-pushing directors, including the Coen brothers (“Raising Arizona”), David Lynch (“Wild at Heart”) and Spike Jonze (“Adaptation”). Each is rated on a scale of bees — one for sleepy, five for loony — in honor of the insects that tortured him in the 2006 remake of “The Wicker Man.”
COOLIDGE, Arizona – From engines to landing gear, the hunt is on for aircraft parts as airlines prepare their jets for swarms of summer travelers, with new planes from Boeing and Airbus still in short supply. The search for parts leads some aircraft owners here, where older, retired planes are stripped for parts that will be prepared to fly on other planes or repurposed altogether. The current demand for aircraft parts is the result of the industry's deep demand swings resulting from the Covid pandemic. With deliveries of new jets behind schedule, airlines are holding onto planes longer, repairing or overhauling them, adding to demand for parts and labor.
