Since October 8, the day after Hamas’ deadly attack on Israel, there has been regular cross-border fire between Hezbollah and the Israeli military. Hezbollah first fired at Israel to protest the war in Gaza, demanding a ceasefire there as a condition to end its attacks. Should Israel enter full-scale war with Hezbollah, experts say it will face a much stronger threat than Hamas – and commensurate costs. “It’s devastating on the Israeli economy, on Israeli society,” Guzansky said, adding that the impacts will live on for years to come. Domestically, while Israelis showed a greater appetite for fighting at the outset of the Gaza war, polls show that domestic support has waned over the last months.

China's slow post-Covid recovery could be a lasting headwind for its stock market. With the mainland's two largest indexes — the Shanghai Composite and the Shenzhen Composite — each negative so far in 2024, KraneShares Chief Investment Officer Brendan Ahern thinks government stimulus is necessary to kick-start the country's stock market performance. Ahern, whose firm runs the KraneShares CSI China Internet ETF (KWEB) , added that Chinese households are still reluctant to spend at pre-pandemic levels. This week's post-earnings plunge in PDD Holdings is emblematic of China's consumer pullback, according to Ahern. Ahern returned to the idea that a top-down economic recovery might be necessary to stimulate China's tech sector in particular.

That’s why, he said, he invested in AppHarvest, a startup that promised a high-tech future for farming and for the workers of Eastern Kentucky. Despite promising local jobs, the company eventually began contracting migrant workers from Mexico, Guatemala and other countries, numerous former employees told CNN. After about a week on the job, Vance took a meeting with AppHarvest founder Jonathan Webb, as Webb later recounted in a Fox News podcast interview. The company’s health care benefits attracted Morgan, a single father, who told CNN he took a pay cut to join the startup. Such comments ring hollow to some former AppHarvest workers, who argue Vance’s rhetoric as a candidate for vice president doesn’t align with the reality they experienced.

The big issue for stocks: How real is the recession risk?
  + stars: | 2024-08-05 | by ( Bob Pisani | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +5 min
If you think we are going into a recession, that estimate of 15% earnings growth is clearly wrong. During the last recession, in 2020, earnings growth dropped 13% year-over-year, though they recovered quickly in 2021. Another issue is the forward earnings multiple, or P/E ratio, which is a measure of how much investors are paying for $1 of future earnings. First, a garden variety correction (down 10%), would bring the S & P 500 to about 5,100, about 200 points below where it is now. ): Current situation: 15% earnings growth, 19.1 P/E = S & P 5,300 Lower growth, same P/E 10% earnings growth, 19 P/E = S & P 5,089 Lower growth, lower P/E: 10% earnings growth 17 P/E = S & P 4,554 Bearish: 5% earnings growth 15 P/E = S & P 3,835 Recession, really?

Stocks had a rough week, topped off with a pummeling Friday after the July jobs data came in weaker than expected. Until then, bad economic news was good news for the stock market, because it meant the Federal Reserve would start cutting interest rates sooner. On Thursday, a drop in U.S. manufacturing activity for July and a jump in initial jobless claims dragged down the market. Next week is light on economic data, so expect earnings reports and CEO commentaries to drive the market action. As families shop for school supplies, how should they prepare for the spread of viruses and other diseases? Dr. Leana Wen: Historically, respiratory illnesses peak later in the year when the weather gets cooler. CNN: As families shop for school supplies, should they also pick up Covid tests or medications to treat respiratory illnesses? My husband stayed up working, and very early the next morning a bat flew into our bedroom, through a screen door left open by accident. What happened over the next few days restored my faith in the systems in our country that keep us safe. “Bat!” I told my husband, sleeping beside me. “It’s one thing after another,” my husband said, clambering out of bed to grab something to catch it with. Though bats are beneficial insectivores, they’re also our highest risk for contracting rabies, a fatal disease carried by about 6 percent of bats tested in the continental United States.
