Mike Rounds, R-S.D., and Angus King, I-Maine, cut a bipartisan deal to give Dreamers legal status while giving Trump money for his border wall, Trump’s White House successfully fought to kill the deal because it didn’t also curtail family-based immigration. Cornyn noted that any such bipartisan deal would take a backseat to border security and enforcement, which Republicans are making plans to provide funding for in a big party-line bill early next year. “Last term, President-elect Trump walked away from four different bipartisan compromises with Democrats to solve the DACA crisis. Last year, Trump successfully fought to sink a bipartisan deal to toughen border security as he campaigned on the issue. When asked if protecting Dreamers is “amnesty,” Kennedy echoed a famous dodge used by former President Bill Clinton.

A Trump transition official disputed this arrangement. “President Trump has nominated highly-respected leaders who will serve our nation with excellence. “Whatever her partisan alignment, there is no question in President Trump’s orbit that Gabbard is 100% aligned with the MAGA movement and the America First agenda of President Trump. He and his team remain committed to her successful nomination,” the transition official told NBC News. Similarly, McConnell would be hard-pressed to allow Gabbard’s efforts to move forward, despite so far having kept his comments about Trump’s nominees private, one of the sources said.

WASHINGTON — Conservative justices objected as the Supreme Court on Monday sidestepped a new dispute over race in education by declining to consider whether an admissions program for public high schools in Boston unlawfully considered race. The court's refusal to hear the case marks the second time the court has declined to review a policy aimed at increasing diversity in public high schools since the high court ended the consideration of race in college admissions last year. The policy, implemented by the Boston School Committee in 2021, applied to three selective high schools in Boston: Boston Latin School, Boston Latin Academy and John D. O’Bryant School. The Supreme Court in February turned away a similar challenge to an admissions policy at a Virginia high school that was also aimed at increasing diversity. In a statement, Gorsuch said that the fact the Boston schools' policy was no longer in effect was one reason not to hear the case.

Interviews with more than a dozen individuals who worked with Patel shed new light on his path to power. After joining the White House as a member of the National Security Council, Patel became known as an aggressive colleague, sources say, often clashing with others. “The (FBI) director leads an agency that’s going after Russian and Chinese spies, mobsters, kidnappers,” one source familiar with the transition’s discussions about the FBI job told CNN. Earl Matthews, a former Trump official who worked with Patel in the White House, said he brings a unique resume to the job. ‘Why is Kash here?’By 2019, after Republicans lost their House majority, Nunes worked to make good on his promise to help Patel get to the White House.

He’s also lobbied for policies that would restrict VA care and believes veterans should ask for fewer government benefits. “We want to have full choice where veterans can go wherever they want for care,” Hegseth told Trump on speakerphone as Shulkin listened, according to Shulkin’s 2019 memoir. For Shulkin, a rare “holdover” from President Barack Obama’s administration to Trump’s, this was “the worst-case scenario” for veteran health care, and one he had repeatedly warned Hegseth against. As secretary of defense, Hegseth would oversee the Military Health System, which is separate from the Veterans Health Administration. “If this continues, the Defense Department will eventually be a health care and pension provider that also happens to fight wars,” he wrote.

“Just who do we think we are?” Roberts said in the memorable 2015 dissent, when he similarly argued against judges intervening to protect individual rights. Roberts brushed aside arguments that Tennessee’s ban on gender-affirming care amounted to sex discrimination and said decisions regarding medical treatment were best left to state legislatures. When Roberts previously dissented from the decision declaring a constitutional right to same-sex marriage, he said the five-justice majority had hijacked the democratic process. “Stealing this issue from the people will for many cast a cloud over same-sex marriage, making a dramatic social change that much more difficult to accept. Same-sex marriage, on the other hand, has faded as a campaign issue in the decade after Obergefell.

The martial law order, South Korea’s first since 1980, was reversed so quickly that many South Koreans weren’t aware of it until they woke up on Wednesday. People her age who had experienced martial law under the military dictatorship rushed to convenience stores to buy canned food, she said. Biden, who hosted Yoon for a state visit to Washington last year, has worked to enhance military and other ties with South Korea as a deterrent against China and North Korea, establishing a new trilateral security partnership with South Korea and its historic rival Japan. Macron’s center-right prime minister, Michel Barnier, is facing a no-confidence vote tabled by far-right leader Marine Le Pen and her National Rally party. WASHINGTON — The conservative-majority Supreme Court on Wednesday dives into the culture war issue of transgender rights as it weighs whether states can restrict gender transition care for minors. Democrats, including the Biden administration in the case now at the court, have sought to increase protections for transgender people. The surgery ban is not at issue in the Supreme Court case after a lower court judge said the plaintiffs did not have legal standing to challenge it. The case being argued Wednesday reached the Supreme Court after the Cincinnati-based 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals issued a ruling last year rejecting challenges to the Tennessee law and a similar measure in Kentucky.

CNN —French lawmakers will vote Wednesday on a no-confidence motion that is widely expected to oust the government of Prime Minister Michel Barnier, as the country grapples with a deepening political crisis and massive budget deficit. The no-confidence vote is the just the latest jolt on a political rollercoaster in France, where no single party has wielded a majority in parliament since snap elections in July. No government has been ousted in a no-confidence vote since 1962 and Barnier would become France’s shortest-serving prime minister in history. This gridlock has made the government’s budget problems much harder to solve. The credit rating agency expects France’s budget deficit to reach 6.2% of GDP by the end of the year.

President-elect Donald Trump’s cabinet selections are a mix of conventional (Senator Marco Rubio and Gov. Doug Burgum) and oddball (Tulsi Gabbard and Robert F. Kennedy Jr.) — reflecting the heterodox coalition that brought him back to power. While never a traditional Republican, Mr. Trump, in a second term, looks likely to go further than in his first in dumping many traditional Republican policies. In particular, Mr. Trump seems willing, even eager, to embrace vice. In his recent campaign, Mr. Trump embraced a strategy of social moderation.

CNN —Iran’s parliament has enacted a harsh new modesty law, significantly tightening existing dress restrictions that have already fueled nationwide protests and posed a serious challenge to regime stability. “In my opinion the hijab law, which I have to implement, is vague. It defines improper dress in various ways, ranging from nudity and dressing immodestly to wearing the hijab incorrectly. The law also introduces a system of fines and restrictions with financial penalties, even for initial offenses. While the harsher penalties have caused concern for Iranians, a particularly controversial aspect of the legislation is expanded surveillance.

Gorsuch, a key vote in transgender case, remains silentOne of the most notable twists in the hours of speaking was a conservative justice who decided to say nothing at all: Neil Gorsuch. It’s one of several issues that adds uncertainty to the future of the litigation around transgender rights. Transgender rights advocates have argued that that anti-transgender laws aimed at supposedly protecting children are just the start of a strategy that would ultimately go after all transgender people. Paris CNN —French lawmakers said they had introduced a motion of no confidence against Prime Minister Michel Barnier on Monday, setting up a vote that could see the far right topple his government within days. However, that maneuver in turn grants lawmakers the opportunity table no-confidence motions against him – and lawmakers on the left, who have repeatedly vowed to bring down Barnier’s government, did just that. She added a warning to French President Emmanuel Macron, writing: “We have tabled a motion of no confidence. “We are going to support this no confidence vote because the French have had enough of being mistreated.
