Why doesn’t the US have more passenger trains?
  + stars: | 2023-11-25 | by ( Samantha Delouya | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +12 min
Today, the United States’ passenger rail system is an echo of its former self, with swathes of the network unused or surrendered to freight. In 1970, President Richard Nixon signed the Rail Passenger Service Act, which removed the requirement that private rail companies provide passenger service. Mike Segar/ReutersBut many American towns and cities have lost access to passenger trains. Can passenger trains make a comeback? The urban farm supplies Walmart and Whole Foods with leafy greens. The urban farm run by the Bay Area agricultural-tech startup Plenty is designed to grow up to 4.5 million pounds of leafy greens annually. Plenty launched the large-scale indoor farm in May, producing leafy greens that can go from harvest to store in 24 hours. Over my two-decade career as a food journalist, I've visited farms and processing plants that supply leafy greens for top fast-food chains such as McDonald's. Plenty, on the other hand, grows, harvests, and packages four types of leafy greens in a single facility.

The phenomenon of active athletes hosting podcasts largely started in the N.B.A., where players can command more attention because there are smaller rosters and more frequent games. Early entries included JJ Redick’s “The Vertical” in 2016 and Richard Jefferson and Channing Frye’s “Road Trippin’” in 2017. Podcasting is particularly attractive to players who are still generating N.F.L. Hill said he started his podcast, “It Needed to Be Said,” partly to prepare for a potential broadcasting career. Brands such as Bleacher Report, which works with Parsons and Miller, have increasingly signed up athletes.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The former street gang leader charged with orchestrating the 1996 drive-by killing of Tupac Shakur in Las Vegas is expected to plead not guilty Thursday to murder, amid questions of whether he'll hire a defense lawyer or a judge appoints a public defender. Goodman spoke for Davis outside court two weeks ago, saying that prosecutors lack key evidence and witnesses to the killing committed 27 years ago. The attorney didn't give a reason Wednesday why Davis couldn’t hire him. He was arrested Sept. 29 outside a home in suburban Henderson where Las Vegas police served a search warrant July 17, drawing renewed attention to the unsolved murder of one of hip-hop music’s most enduring icons. His indictment alleges Davis provided a gun to someone in the Cadillac from which car-to-car gunfire mortally wounded Shakur and wounded rap music mogul Marion “Suge” Knight at an intersection just off the Las Vegas Strip.

An investigation into a Colorado coal train derailment and bridge collapse that killed a truck driver is focused on whether inspection and maintenance practices at BNSF Railway contributed to the accident, federal officials said Thursday. The steel bridge built in 1958 collapsed onto Interstate 25 Oct 15, when a broken rail caused 30 cars from a BNSF Railway train hauling coal to derail, the National Transportation Safety Board said based on preliminary findings. Broken rails and other track problems are a leading cause of derailments, according to federal accident data. Political Cartoons View All 1230 ImagesThe BNSF train was travelling about 32 mph (52 kph) — below the 45 mph (72 kph) limit for the area, the NTSB said. There were more than 12,400 train derailments in the U.S. in the past decade, or more than 1,200 annually, according to Federal Railroad Administration data based on reports submitted by railroads.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The former Southern California street gang leader charged with killing Tupac Shakur in 1996 in Las Vegas has lost his bid to be represented at his arraignment by the lawyer who spoke publicly about his defense two weeks ago. The judge also could name a defense attorney in private practice to represent Davis at taxpayer expense, or assign a special public defender from the county, an alternate roster of possible court-appointed attorneys. Political Cartoons View All 1230 Images“We're just not sure at this point how this will play out and who will end up representing him,” said Jordan Savage, assistant special public defender. Edi Faal, Davis’ longtime personal lawyer in Los Angeles, said Wednesday he expected that a special public defender would be named to represent Davis. Davis is expected to plead not guilty to a murder charge that could put him in prison for the rest of his life.

There are currently no federal laws in the United States against the creation and sharing of non-consensual deepfake pornography. This is the online landscape that has allowed creating and trading non-consensual deepfake pornography to develop into a thriving business. With advancements in artificial intelligence, deepfake pornography is becoming increasingly common — and it almost exclusively targets women. Deepfake porn sites are facilitated and enabled by search engines that drive web traffic toward deepfake content. In the US, however, only a handful of states have laws addressing non-consensual deepfake pornography, and many of them are limited in scope.

‘Another Body’ Review: A Cowardly New World

The film, directed by Sophie Compton and Reuben Hamlyn, follows Taylor as she attempts to track down the person responsible. Along the way, she discovers two others whose faces have also been used for deepfake porn: Julia, a woman she recognizes from college, and Gibi, an ASMR actor and streamer. The twist is that Taylor’s and Julia’s names are pseudonyms and that they are portrayed by “face veil” actors (that technology came to the fore in the documentary “Welcome to Chechnya”). “Another Body” is most persuasive when experts weigh in on the reality-upending aspects of deepfake technology and image-based sex abuse. That the documentary does this by utilizing some of that technology to protect Taylor and Julia’s identities raises its own ethical questions — ones that, even with the filmmakers’ compassion and transparency, “Another Body” doesn’t quite resolve.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The Southern California street gang leader charged in the fatal shooting of Tupac Shakur in 1996 in Las Vegas will make a court appearance Thursday with a lawyer from one of the city's best-known political families, one that has represented mobsters, athletes and other famous clients. Attorney Ross Goodman told The Associated Press Wednesday he'll appear in Duane “Keffe D” Davis' defense against accusations that Davis orchestrated the drive-by killing of the rap music icon. Davis won't immediately enter a plea, Goodman said, he'll seek another two weeks to confirm that he'll be hired for Davis' case. Goodman is a son of former Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman and current Mayor Carolyn Goodman. In July, a police raid at Davis' home drew renewed interest to Shakur's unsolved murder, one of hip-hop music’s enduring mysteries.

Procter & Gamble on Wednesday reported quarterly earnings and revenue that topped analysts' expectations, despite volume falling for the sixth consecutive quarter. The company's organic revenue increased 7% in the quarter, helped by higher prices for P&G's products. But the company's volume shrank 1%. The company now projects revenue growth of 2% to 4%, rather than its prior forecast of 3% to 4%. P&G reiterated its full-year forecast for organic revenue growth, which strips out the impact of acquisitions, divestitures and foreign currency, and for earnings per share growth.

CNN —A Las Vegas Metropolitan Police detective investigating the 1996 murder of rapper Tupac Shakur testified before a grand jury in September that detectives had a theory that his murder and the murder of rapper Biggie Smalls may have been related. As part of the grand jury testimony, Mogg read sections of Davis’ book “Compton Street Legend” to illustrate his description of him participating in a gang and to share the details therein about the events surrounding Shakur’s death. Shakur was shot four times and died six days later. Shakur died in September 1996 in Las Vegas. But the company released a gloomy outlook for its fiscal 2024 sales that fell short of Wall Street's estimates. For fiscal 2024, P&G is forecasting that its revenue will grow 3% to 4%, lower than Wall Street's expectations of 4.5% sales growth. For roughly two years, P&G has been raising prices on its products to mitigate higher commodity costs. In fiscal 2024, P&G expects its volume will start increasing again, and prices will only rise 1% to 1.5%.
