CNN —On a night Republicans projected bravado around their 2024 presidential ticket, Donald Trump started his prime-time address by displaying a rare vulnerability. The former president’s son Eric Trump delivered conservative red meat, much like his brother Donald Trump Jr. had a night earlier. Little mention of Biden (by name)Trump said Thursday night that he would use Biden’s name only once. Thursday night, CNN reported that many senior-ranking White House and campaign officials now privately believe that Biden must abandon his campaign for a second term – and soon. And especially so on its final night, when the politicians mostly gave way to right-leaning celebrities.

Former US President Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt Saturday during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. After gunshots rang out — one of which pierced the upper part of Trump’s right ear — Trump fell to the ground and Secret Service agents rushed the stage to surround him. The shooter was killed by the Secret Service, the agency said. The FBI identified the shooter as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, and authorities told CNN that he was positioned on a building rooftop just outside the rally venue. Here are some of the stories that made headlines over the past week, as well as some photos that caught our eye.

I found out during a live comedy show that the former president had been shot at. The second comic confirmed what the first one said, and joked that if this had happened in another era, they probably would have canceled the show. Thousands of Trump supporters in Milwaukee on Monday night hailed their leader, elevating him from MAGA superhero to saint-like status. For Trump’s millions of American fans, Monday night was a validation of their faith in God and the ex-president and the righteousness of his mission. A list of Black Republican and female Republican lawmakers gave speeches, offering a somewhat misleading perception that the GOP has a deep and diverse bench. One GOP source said speechwriters at the convention had thrown out all their pre-written material for the week’s top speakers and started again. The ex-president has a new chance at politics and life in the wake of his assassination attempt.

Lauren Boebert have created an environment in the US where violence is normalized, a political violence expert said in the wake of former President Donald Trump's attempted assassination. Rachel Kleinfeld, an expert on political violence, told Politico she thinks it's "political leaders like Marjorie Taylor Greene or Lauren Boebert or so on" who've been "amplifying the extremes" in the country. After the shooting, Greene blamed the incident on the Democratic Party. On Sunday — less than a day after the Trump rally shooting — senior lawmakers like House Speaker Mike Johnson asked people to cool it with the heated rhetoric. Representatives for Trump, Greene and Boebert did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Business Insider sent outside regular business hours.

The uproar over the Trump assassination attempt may pause the intraparty rebellion against Biden for now, especially as he assumes his role as the leader of a nation in sudden crisis. In a nation that was already deeply divided, the core vote for both Trump and Biden was probably locked in. There can be no justification for an assassination attempt on a candidate — an assault on democracy. Many Republican politicians issued calls for calm and an easing of political rhetoric after the shooting — as did Democrats. And Johnson accompanied his calls for calm by implying that Democrats — in advancing their arguments against Trump — had somehow abetted the assassination attempt.
