SAVANNAH, Ga. — David Shockley doesn’t understand his son Darius’ political ideology. “It makes no sense,” said David, who is Black and plans to vote for former President Donald Trump for a second time. The latest NBC News Stay Tuned Gen Z poll, powered by SurveyMonkey, found that more than half of Gen Z respondents ages 18 to 29 say they have different political views than at least one of their parents. Both David and Darius — two Black men in a battleground state — are emblematic of a voter base that Democrats and Republicans see as integral to success. “Despite the chasm between the political views, we still come together on our—” said David as he searched for the right word.

LOS ANGELES — California and Nevada voters are weighing whether to repeal legal loopholes in their state constitutions that allow slavery and involuntary servitude to be used as criminal punishment. California and Nevada would join a growing national trend that started with voters in Colorado repealing involuntary servitude in 2018. Slavery and involuntary servitude were banned nationally by the 13th Amendment with one exception — as punishment for a crime. In 2016, Shawna Lynn Jones became the first incarcerated woman to die while fighting a fire in California, according to the state corrections department. A federal judge on Thursday issued a temporary restraining order against Florida’s surgeon general, the latest development in a legal battle over a television ad supporting the state’s abortion rights ballot measure. Earlier this month, the Florida Department of Health sent cease-and-desist letters to multiple broadcast stations that had aired the ad, threatening criminal charges against stations that didn’t stop playing it. The restraining order against Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo lasts through Oct. 29. Are ‘manfluencers’ raising our sons?
  + stars: | 2024-10-09 | by ( Shannon Carpenter | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +8 min
I realize that this old dad is not the hippest, but I thought I’d always kept an eye on the media my sons consume. On the surface, it seems easy to pinpoint what attracts our young men to manfluencers. That is the true draw to our young men, a place where they are the elite and above others. Since teenagers can be hard to meet head-on, try connecting with sons by praising them to others and through communication. We can lead our sons past the false trappings of fancy cars and money, and the cruelty perpetuated by these manfluencers.

Helping your children develop the resilience to handle life's inevitable setbacks is the key to raising them into happy and successful adults, says Dr. Tovah Klein. The truth is, "it's much more dynamic," says Klein, a child psychologist, author and director of the Barnard College Center for Toddler Development. "What children learn is, 'Oh, we can come apart, we can come back together, and it actually builds trust," Klein says. Once children feel comfortable talking about their emotions, parents can help them learn to regulate those feelings. Tovah Klein director of the Barnard College Center for Toddler Development"Children are constantly learning about emotions," Klein says, and parents can help.
