Orange said it's working with OpenAI and Meta to develop custom AI models built on their respective Whisper and Llama open-source AI models — openly available systems that can be adapted to meet specific needs — that can understand West African languages not understood by most conversational systems. The open-source AI models will be provided externally by Orange with a free license for non-commercial uses including public health and education, the company said. Orange plans to expand its custom AI model initiative to eventually cover all 18 West African countries. In addition to using AI systems to improve customer service, Orange is also using the tech to improve a core part of its business: mobile networks.

AMMAN, Jordan — A gunman was dead and three policemen injured after a shooting near the Israeli embassy in neighbouring Jordan, a security source and state media said on Sunday. Police shot a gunman who had fired at a police patrol in the Rabiah neighbourhood of Amman, state news agency Petra reported, citing public security, adding investigations were ongoing. Jordan’s government communications minister, Mohamed Momani, described the shooting as a terror attack that targeted public security forces in the country. Jordanian police had earlier cordoned off an area near the heavily policed embassy after gunshots were heard, witnesses said. Police had called on residents to stay in their homes as security personnel searched for the culprits, a security source said.

President-elect Donald Trump on Friday named Russell Vought, a co-author of Project 2025 who served as a platform policy director for the Republican National Committee, as his pick to lead the Office of Management and Budget. Russell Vought, then-acting director of the Office of Management and Budget, during a hearing in Washington in 2020. If he is confirmed by the Senate, Vought would oversee budget and the execution of Trump's policies across executive departments and agencies. Vought previously served as director of the Office of Management during Trump's first term.
