UK business confidence slips in September: Lloyds Bank
  + stars: | 2023-09-28 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
Companies Lloyds Banking Group PLC FollowLONDON, Sept 29 (Reuters) - British business confidence declined in September as optimism about the economic outlook faded, a survey showed on Friday, adding to signs of a slowdown in the economy. The Lloyds Bank Business Barometer, which surveys around 1,200 companies across the economy, fell to 36% from August's 18-month high of 41%. Hann-Ju Ho, senior economist at Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking, said the BoE's decision - taken after the survey was conducted - could underpin business confidence in the coming months. While Lloyds said its gauge of pricing expectations inched higher in September, hiring intentions cooled. The proportion of companies planning to raise salaries also fell, although remained around the average for the year.

MUMBAI, Sept 26 (Reuters) - India could be among the three fastest growing markets for JPMorgan in the Asia Pacific region next year, alongside Australia and Japan, said a top official at the Wall Street bank. Global corporations like Apple Inc have stepped up production out of India while others like Tesla are in discussions to begin manufacturing in the country. "But the level at which enquiry and activity is picking up in India in substantial," Gori said. JPMorgan has expanded its investment banking team in India, adding two senior managing directors in the last 12 months. "I think we need to distinguish between the headlines and the day to day business because China has actually been exceptionally resilient."

A sign for the The Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC) in Toronto, Ontario, Canada December 13, 2021. CIBC, the last big six Canadian bank to report results for the third quarter, was also the latest to guard against potentially sour loans, a factor that is dragging on earnings across the sector. The issue was reflected in its core Canadian personal and business banking segment, where net income fell 16%. At its commercial banking and wealth management segment, net income fell 4%. CIBC's peers TD Bank (TD.TO), Bank of Montreal (BMO.TO), Bank of Nova Scotia (BNS.TO) and National Bank (NA.TO) missed quarterly profit estimates earlier in the week, also weighed down by higher provisions.

BMO, which bought U.S. regional lender Bank of the West earlier this year, said provision for credit losses rose to C$492 million ($361.42 million), compared with C$136 million a year ago. At Bank of Montreal, net interest income for the quarter rose to C$4.91 billion, compared with C$4.20 billion last year. At Scotiabank net interest income fell to C$4.58 billion, from $4.68 billion a year ago, largely hurt by lower corporate lending and lower loan fees. "We are seeing evidence of slowing labor markets as evidenced by slowing wage growth, lower job postings and an increase in Canadian unemployment. The country's second-largest bank Toronto-Dominion Bank (TD.TO), however, missed analysts' estimates for quarterly profit, which was hurt by higher expenses, rainy day funds to cover for unpaid loans and weakness in its U.S. business. RBC reported adjusted earnings of C$2.84 per share, beating analysts' estimates of C$2.71 per share, according to Refinitiv data. The bank's earnings were also impacted by a C$306 million payment related to the termination of its First Horizon acquisition. HSBC (0005.HK) raised its near-term return on tangible equity goal to at least mid-teens for 2023 and 2024, from a previous target of at least 12% from 2023 onwards. It reported return on tangible equity of 9.9% for 2022. That reflected an environment where rising interest rates around the world are boosting lending income, while a global deal drought and volatile markets suppress revenues from investment banking and trading. The lender lifted its forecast for net interest income this year to be above $35 billion instead of $34 billion, although some analysts had looked for an upgrade nearer to $36 billion. Hong Kong CNN —China has a new central bank governor. He replaced Yi Gang, who took office in March 2018, when China’s longest-serving central banker Zhou Xiaochuan stepped down after a 15-year tenure. He was previously a deputy governor of the PBOC and has served as head of China’s foreign exchange regulator since 2016, managing currency reserves worth $3.18 trillion. In China’s political system, the Communist Party boss is usually the top official in the relevant organization, be it a level of government or a public institution. In March, Beijing created a powerful financial watchdog run by the Communist Party, named the Central Financial Commission, as part of a broad reform of governing bodies to strengthen the party’s oversight of economic affairs.

MANILA, July 24 (Reuters) - Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos Jr on Monday touted his administration's successes over the past year, including battling inflation and steering the economy back on track, but said a number of economic challenges lie ahead. After more than a year in office, buffeted by soaring inflation that has dented economic growth, the government is now "stabilising the prices of all critical commodities", Marcos said. "Inflation rate is moving in the right direction," he said in his second state of the nation address. Developing the long-neglected farm sector, which contributes 10% of the country's economic output, is a priority for Marcos, who also helms the agriculture ministry. The Philippines remains vulnerable to global price shocks because it buys a sizeable portion of its rice overseas, and relies on imports for most of its fuel requirements.

Intesa launches cloud-based Isybank in digital push

Isybank is powered by cloud technology provided by Britain's ThoughtMachine, a cloud-native banking technology firm. High-street banks globally face a big challenge in replacing their existing core IT infrastructure, known as mainframe, with cloud technology. Legacy systems pose a major hurdle, while the task is easy for challenger banks built from scratch on cloud technology. Intesa Sanpaolo has forecast its new digital bank would save around 800 million euros a year in 2026-2027, up from 600 million euros in 2025, according to a strategy presentation delivered in February last year. Isybank targets some 4 million Intesa customers who generate around 200 million euros in revenues a year and could become more profitable for the bank if shifted away from branches given they already only use digital bank services.
