NEW YORK AP —Tucked within the expansive Native American halls of the American Museum of Natural History is a diminutive wooden doll that holds a sacred place among the tribes whose territories once included Manhattan. The doll, also called Nahneetis, is just one of some 1,800 items museum officials say they’re reviewing as they work to comply with the requirements while also eyeing a broader overhaul of the more than half-century-old exhibits. We need them close.”Sean Decatur, the New York museum’s president, promised tribes will hear from officials soon. The American Museum of Natural History, he noted, is one of New York’s major tourism draws and also a mainstay for generations of area students learning about the region’s tribes. He suggests museums use replicas made by Native peoples so that sensitive cultural items aren’t physically on display.

Just after 10 p.m. on Saturday night, on the first weekend of the Paris Olympics, Jill Biden walked through the wood doors of Ralph’s Restaurant Paris, past a towering display of red, white and blue flowers, and picked up two glasses of champagne from a silver tray. Ralph Lauren, the brand that owns the restaurant in the city’s Sixth Arrondissement and is a longtime outfitter of the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic teams, hosted the party to celebrate the U.S. team. The bash — along with the Games — was a chance for the brand to show off its Olympic collections. The marketing potential of the Olympics is “as if you have three Super Bowls a day for 17 days,” said David Lauren, the brand’s chief innovation and branding officer.

Edna O’Brien, the prolific Irish author whose evocative and explicit stories of loves lost earned her a literary reputation that matched the darkly complex lives of her tragic heroines, died on Saturday. Her death was announced on social media by her publisher, Faber, which said only that she had died “after a long illness.” She had spoken in recent years about being treated for cancer. Ms. O’Brien wrote dozens of novels and short-story collections over almost 60 years, starting in 1960 with “The Country Girls,” a book that dealt with the emotional conflicts of two Irish girls who rebel against their Roman Catholic upbringing. Her books often depicted willful but insecure women who loved men who were crass, unfaithful or already married. Much of her early work carried aspects of autobiography, which stirred whisperings about her morals and led to personal attacks against her back home in Ireland.

London CNN —An art historian has identified a missing portrait of King Henry VIII after spotting it on social media. It showed a gathering at a reception in Warwick’s Shire Hall, where Warwickshire County Council is based. The distinctive frame was one of the features that helped identify the painting as the missing portrait of Henry VIII. His focus was on the background where, hanging on a wall, was what he suspected was a missing portrait of the Tudor monarch Henry VIII. In a telephone call with CNN, Busiakiewicz revealed that this was not the first discovery he had made thanks to social media.

Renting your home to strangers for money wasn't even on the horizon when my husband and I bought our first house almost 20 years ago. I thought renting our house to race-goers would be an easy way to make a quick paycheck. We were early Airbnb adoptersIt didn't go well at first, though, with our first guests writing us a bad check. Courtesy of the auhorAlthough it's commonplace now, in those early days, friends thought we'd lost it when we let strangers stay in our house. A beautiful house that just needed some work, with a third floor guest suite and a carriage house, it had tons of potential as a short-term rental rental.

Komodo dragons have iron-tipped teeth, new study shows

London CNN —Komodo dragons, the world’s largest species of lizard, have iron-tipped teeth that help them to rip their prey apart, according to new research. Komodo dragons are native to Indonesia and weigh around 80 kilograms (176 pounds) on average. LeBlanc analyzed teeth from museum collections as well as from a Komodo dragon named Ganus, which lived at London Zoo until it was euthanized last year. Analysis showed that iron was already present when the teeth erupted from the gum tissue, and was also present despite Ganus having a very different diet to wild Komodo dragons, he added. The findings may help us understand how carnivorous dinosaurs, which had curved, serrated teeth similar to Komodo dragons, would have killed and eaten their prey, LeBlanc said.

CNN —For many nations — not least the US — the upcoming Paris Olympics will take place against a background of deep political and social division. If you saw any of the European Athletics Championships events last month, you may well have been struck, as I was, by just how many Black athletes featured on podiums. At the Summer Olympics, the USA team will also feature numerous Black athletes, including gymnast Simone Biles, sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson and the (current) fastest man on earth, Noah Lyles. As you watch the Olympics this summer, take note of the sports in which Black people represent the USA and European countries. So no, Black athletes are not naturally better at some sports — they take the narrower opportunities open to them and work incredibly hard on their self-belief to make it to that podium.

Typically if one bank account owner dies, the surviving owner gets sole control of the account. IntroductionOpening a joint bank account is different from opening up an individual bank account. Both owners have full access to a bank account, and joint bank account rules also dictate specific actions if one owner dies. Rights of survivorshipWhen you're opening up a new bank account, you'll receive a bank account agreement that lists the bank's conditions and rules. With so much riding on your credit score, it's important to understand what counts as a good credit score and how to get one. Here's the full breakdown of how FICO and VantageScore crunch your credit score:FICO VantageScore Payment history (35%) Credit balance (30%) Length of credit history (15%) New credit (10%) Mix of credit accounts (10%) Payment history (35%) Length & type of credit (30%) Credit utilization (20%) Credit balances (11%) Recent applications (5%) Available credit (3%)The most significant aspect of your credit score is your payment history, which looks at how consistently you've made payments. However, hard inquiries stop factoring into your credit score after a year and drop off your credit report entirely after two years, so they don't permanently influence a credit score. Why do tennis players wear white?

A muse to the designer Jean Patou, Lenglen became tennis’ first fashion icon with her signature headscarf and then-shocking shorter hems. Anne White was banned from wearing a white catsuit at Wimbledon four decades before Serena Williams caused a stir with a similar cut at the French Open. Ian Kington/AFP/Getty ImagesAt the US, French and Australian Open, players have challenged definitions of what tennis clothes can be thanks to looser rules (subject to referee opinion). Though she cited its circulation benefits following a severe blood-clot scare with the birth of her child, the French Open said it would bar the style in the future. However, the Women’s Tennis Association formally allowed it, and Williams continued to wear versions of the bodysuit at the 2019 and 2021 Australian Opens, normalizing the agile and simplified cut for the tennis court.

CNN —Sex and gender are often conflated or equated in everyday conversations, and most American adults believe a person’s gender is determined by sex assigned at birth. But a new study of nearly 5,000 9- and 10-year-olds found that sex and gender map onto largely distinct parts of the brain. The researchers on the new study defined sex as what was assigned to the child at birth. They also hope to see how different cultures affect a person’s gender and their brain development. The study did not look at whether sex or gender were congruent or incongruent in any study participant.
