Jensen Huang, co-founder and chief executive officer of Nvidia Corp., during the Nvidia GPU Technology Conference (GTC) in San Jose, California, US, on Tuesday, March 19, 2024. Nvidia's most important clients for its graphics processing units are the big cloud providers — Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud and Oracle Cloud. For example, CoreWeave, a GPU cloud, is currently quoting $4.25 per hour to rent an Nvidia H100. Huang said Meta has declared its intention to spend billions on 350,000 Nvidia chips, even though the company isn't a cloud provider. Meta's cluster of servers is an example of "essential infrastructure for AI production," Huang said, or, "what we refer to as AI factories."

A significant chunk of that money was strategic, in that it came from tech companies rather than venture capitalists or other institutions. The company has refocused much of its product development on generative AI, and its newly rebranded Gemini model, adding features into search, documents, maps and elsewhere. Alphabet and Nvidia are also investors in Runway ML, a generative AI company known for its video-editing and visual effects tools. Microsoft has invested in many of the techniques underpinning generative AI through its Microsoft Research division. Apple researchers recently published details of their work on MM1, a family of small AI models that can take both text and visual input.

The companies announced an initial $1.25 billion investment in September, and said at the time that Amazon would invest up to $4 billion. The deal was struck at the AI startup's last valuation, which was $18.4 billion, according to a source. Over the past year, Anthropic closed five different funding deals worth about $7.3 billion — and with the new Amazon investment, the total exceeds $10 billion. News of the Amazon investment comes weeks after Anthropic debuted Claude 3, its newest suite of AI models that it says are its fastest and most powerful yet. The Marvell Technology Group Ltd. headquarters building stands in Santa Clara, California, U.S., on Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2011. Marvell Technology forecast first-quarter results below market expectations on Thursday, hurt by weak demand for its custom chips used in artificial intelligence applications, sending the company's shares down about 8% in extended trade. The company had flagged in November that it expects roughly half its revenue to decline in the first quarter, weighed down by weak demand in its wireless carrier and enterprise markets. The company forecast first-quarter adjusted earnings per share of 23 cents, plus or minus 5 cents, compared with estimates of 40 cents per share, according to LSEG data. The company reported fourth-quarter revenue of $1.43 billion, beating estimates of $1.42 billion, on the back of rapid adoption of artificial intelligence.

Opinion: What the AT&T outage reveals
  + stars: | 2024-02-23 | by ( Opinion Bob Kolasky | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
CNN —The news Thursday morning of the AT&T service outage — affecting tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of customers — was yet another reminder of the importance of critical infrastructure resilience. By a few minutes after 3 pm ET, about 11 hours after customers’ initial reports of the outage, AT&T said it had restored service to all affected customers. For communications, it can be conceptualized in two different ways: What is the scope and scale of the service outage and what are the cascading consequences of the outage? In a connected world, a widespread communications outage can have a contagion effect. Infrastructure outage incidents can’t be addressed by stove-piping information.

NVDA 5Y mountain Nvidia 5 years The Nvidia phenomenon is something for all investors to take note of and study. The first question we got on the call was in relation to the sustainability of the Data Center sales momentum. Generative AI isn't possible in a data center built for traditional general-purpose computing. In fact, Nvidia believes AI inferencing was responsible for about 40% of Data Center sales over the past year. This is why Nvidia was designated by Jim Cramer and the Club as an "own it, don't trade it" stock.

About 15% or $2.7 billion of Nvidia's revenue for the quarter ended October came from Singapore, a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filing showed. Revenue coming from Singapore in the third quarter jumped 404.1% from the $562 million in revenue recorded in the same period a year ago. Singapore only trailed behind the U.S. (34.77%,) Taiwan (23.91%) and China including Hong Kong (22.24%) in Nvidia's third-quarter sales rankings. Bottom line This was a very strong quarter, with almost nothing to nitpick. This year's rapid Data Center sales growth we've seen has been driven largely by cloud providers and enterprises. Sales to China and other impacted regions have, in the past few quarters, accounted for 20% to 25% of Data Center sales. However, the team added that they "believe the decline will be more than offset by strong growth in other regions." But the real focus will be on whether widening U.S. curbs on sales of its high-end chips to China could hamper that run. The results will also be a major test for the AI-powered rally that has helped drive up the U.S. stock market this year, with the Philadelphia semiconductor index (.SOX) up nearly 50% in 2023. The Biden administration last month banned China sales of the H800 and A800 chips that Nvidia had created after previous curbs on exports to the country. Reuters GraphicsCHINA CHIPSBefore the latest China export curbs, demand for Nvidia's H800 chip, a slower version of its flagship AI chip, had outpaced rivals as it was better than the alternatives. "It's possible Nvidia's massive growth will make revenue from China less material over time," Morningstar analysts said.
