US government considers a breakup of Google
  + stars: | 2024-10-09 | by ( Clare Duffy | Brian Fung | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
The US Department of Justice in a court filing Tuesday night said it may recommend dismantling Google’s core businesses, separating Google’s search business from Android, Chrome and the Google Play app store. “That would prevent Google from using products such as Chrome, Play, and Android to advantage Google search and Google search-related products and features — including emerging search access points and features, such as artificial intelligence — over rivals or new entrants,” the government said in its court filing. The case had been described as the biggest tech antitrust case since the US government’s antitrust showdown with Microsoft at the turn of the millennium. Whatever ultimately happens to Google could set the stage for potential remedies in other, ongoing antitrust cases against tech giants. Google faces a separate case brought by DOJ attorneys, along with 17 states, who allege that its advertising business is anticompetitive.

New York CNN —A bipartisan group of 14 attorneys general from across the country filed lawsuits on Tuesday against TikTok, alleging that the platform has “addicted” young people and harmed their mental health. And last month, 42 state attorneys general called on US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy to require labels on social media apps warning of their potential harm to young users. It also alleges that TikTok “challenges,” viral trends where users try to replicate videos created by others, can encourage dangerous behavior among young users. TikTok previously cooperated with New York authorities to remove subway surfing content, the New York Times reported in January. The lawsuit seeks financial penalties against TikTok, including a requirement that the platform repay any profits it received from ads directed to New York teens or pre-teens.

CNN —Russia has captured the key eastern Ukrainian town of Vuhledar, ending months of resistance and underscoring the scale of Kyiv’s challenge as it heads into its third wartime winter. While not a transport and logistics hub like Pokrovsk, Vuhledar was heavily fortified and viewed as a crucial bastion at the intersection of Ukraine’s eastern and southern fronts. Just like Avdiivka, another strategic eastern town which fell in February, Vuhledar is a victim, not of Russian strategic prowess, but brute force attrition. For two years Ukraine had put up a formidable defense there, as Russia tried and failed several times to take the town. “It’s painful, Vuhledar or rather those who settled there, drank a lot of blood,” he said.

In addition to this, our teams are joining the local taskforces to try to restore the most basic services and bring further supplies to Spruce Pine,” The Quartz Corp said in a statement. The Quartz Corp facility near Spruce Pine, North Carolina, is seen during a CNN flyover of the area on Monday, September 30. And while quartz is abundant around the world, the kind of ultra-high-purity quartz mined in Spruce Pine is not. The Spruce Pine mines provide an estimated 80% to 90% of the world’s high-purity quartz — experts say the exact amount is proprietary and unknown — supplying semiconductor manufacturers like chipmaking giant Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company. However, Wang said that despite the scale of the devastation in Spruce Pine, there is still reason for optimism.

Microsoft on Tuesday announced a major update to Copilot, its AI system, that it says marks the first step toward creating an “AI companion” for users. The updated Copilot has new capabilities, including real-time voice interactions and the ability to interpret images and text on users’ screens. Copilot’s update also reflects Microsoft’s specific vision for how everyday people will use AI as the technology develops. Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman contends that people need AI to be more than a productivity tool, they need it to be a kind of digital friend. “I think in the future, the first thought you’re going to have is, ‘Hey, Copilot,’” Suleyman told CNN in an interview ahead of Tuesday’s announcement.

Apple needed the iPhone 16 to be a big seller after years of sluggish iPhone sales. In particular, demand for the higher priced iPhone 16 Pro devices were down sharply year-over-year compared with the iPhone 15 launch. Analysts say there appears to have been greater demand for the lower priced iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus devices than the Pro and Pro Max, which could affect the average selling price and overall iPhone sales revenue. In the first weekend of presales, Apple sold 9.8 million iPhone 16 Pros and 17.1 million iPhone 16 Pro Max devices, down 27% and 16% year-over-year, respectively, according to Kuo. “It’s all about a monster holiday quarter and the supercycle begins for iPhone 16 in our view,” Ives told CNN in an email.

The stopgap spending bill, which will fund the government until December 20, will next be sent to President Joe Biden to be signed into law. Johnson had said that he believes Trump understands that House Republicans don’t have the votes to pass the SAVE Act. The House vote was 341 to 82 with 132 Republicans and 209 Democrats voting in favor and 82 Republicans voting against. As that internal contest nears, Johnson’s own leadership deputies are working to shore up their own relationships across the House GOP. In recent days, for instance, Emmer’s team gave personally engraved hockey sticks to several House Republicans that thanked them for their service to the chamber.

New York CNN —Facebook and Instagram users will now be able to talk to voices that sound a lot like John Cena and Judy Dench. Parent company Meta (META) announced Wednesday that it is adding voice conversations and celebrity voices to its artificial intelligence chatbot, Meta AI. Now, instead of simply messaging with the chatbot, users can have real-time conversations and can choose from a selection of computer-generated or celebrity voices. The company partnered with Cena and Dench, as well as actors Kristen Bell, Awkwafina and Keegan-Michael Key, to train the chatbot to replicate their voices. Previously, influencers could train AI to have text conversations with their followers; now, followers will be able to have full, quasi-video calls with the AI versions of influencers who use the tool.

Earlier this year, a federal judge ordered Musk to testify as part of the SEC’s probe of the billionaire’s $44 billion acquisition. The agency is examining whether Musk followed the law when disclosing his purchases of Twitter stock and whether his statements in relation to the deal were misleading. GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump has called for Republicans to shut down the government if they can’t pass the voting measure known as the SAVE Act. Many Democrats are pushing for an extension into December that would not include the SAVE Act, which is viewed as a non-starter in the Senate. “House Republicans don’t seem to have any plan for actually keeping the government open, so the Senate will step in,” Schumer said in floor remarks. “Many Republican House members, as many of you have reported, are smart enough to know if there is a shutdown, it will be a Republican shutdown. There never is a shutdown — hardly ever is a shutdown,” said Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin, a Democrat from Illinois.

Washington CNN —The House failed on Wednesday to pass a six-month GOP government funding plan that included a controversial measure targeting noncitizen voting, an effort pushed by Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump. The House vote was 202 to 220, with 14 Republicans voting against it, two Republicans voting present and three Democrats voting for it. Johnson would not reveal on Wednesday ahead of the planned vote what he would do if the GOP government funding plan fails and said he has spoken to Trump “a lot” about government funding after the former president floated a government shutdown. Trump had previously said that if Republicans don’t receive “absolute assurances” about election security, they should not pass a funding extension. The six-month funding plan from House Republicans would have extended government funding until March 2025.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer on Monday pressed for Republicans to join Democrats in voting to advance the IVF bill. Democratic Sen. Ron Wyden of Oregon objected, and instead urged their colleagues to support Democrats’ bill during Tuesday’s vote. Another Senate GOP bill aimed at addressing concerns about IVF was introduced earlier this year. On Tuesday, Democratic Sen. Instagram will automatically apply the new “teen accounts” settings to all users under the age of 18. The revision will allow teen users to receive messages only from people they are already connected to. The shift limits the types of “sensitive” content teens can see on their Explore page and in Reels, such as posts promoting cosmetic procedures. Teen users will also receive time limit reminders nudging them to leave after spending 1 hour on the app each day. Washington CNN —Speaker Mike Johnson is once again facing a major challenge as he navigates a government funding fight while under pressure from an extremely narrow majority in the House and former President Donald Trump. The course the speaker charts could also factor into whether he can hold onto his leadership post after the election. Trump has also waded into the funding fight, a dynamic that could further complicate the effort to avert a shutdown. But the plan is viewed as a non-starter in the Senate and faces opposition within the House GOP conference as well. “You’ve seen the chaos in the House because Speaker Johnson is trying to do this in a partisan way, guided by the far right.

New York CNN —The Republican nominee for president went on live TV and presented an unhinged, debunked Facebook rumor as fact. Scrolling on Facebook or X, it’s hard not to see some of that chaos creeping into the mainstream. Just a few weeks ago, the former president posted an AI-generated image on his Truth Social platform that suggested Taylor Swift had endorsed him. Of course, it was a fake image — the same kind of obvious AI slop that has overrun Facebook and X. Either Trump didn’t know the image was fake, or he didn’t mind lying to his followers and perpetuating the fake endorsement.

Washington CNN —A six-month House GOP government funding plan cleared a key hurdle on Tuesday, but remains at risk of failing as Speaker Mike Johnson attempts to navigate a shutdown fight with his narrow majority. The House voted 209-206 to approve a rule to govern debate for the funding plan, which includes a controversial measure that targets noncitizen voting. But at least six House Republicans have come out against the funding bill, which is enough to sink it in the House amid Democratic opposition, and the bill is considered dead-on-arrival in the Democratic-controlled Senate. The six-month funding plan from House Republicans would extend government funding until March 2025. Many House conservatives are also generally opposed to short-term funding bills, arguing instead in favor of spending cuts.

What about your data: Since Apple Intelligence and ChatGPT will be used for largely different purposes, the amount and type of information users send to each AI may be different, too. While Apple users will have to send their personal information and AI queries to OpenAI if they want to use ChatGPT, Apple has said that most of the time Apple Intelligence won’t be sending user data anywhere. As much as possible, Apple will try to process AI prompts directly on your device using smaller AI models.
