Unlike the ambitious opening ceremony, the closing ceremony will take a more traditional route. Rather than the open-air venue of the Seine River, the closing ceremony will be held in the 80,000-seat Stade de France. What time does the Olympic closing ceremony start? Similar to the opening ceremony, many details about the closing ceremony have been kept under wraps. Swimmer Katie Ledecky and rower Nick Mead will be the flag bearers during the closing ceremony.

CNN —American rapper Travis Scott was arrested in Paris early Friday morning after getting into a fight with his bodyguard, authorities in the French capital said. Scott was subsequently arrested for “violence against another person,” according to a police spokesman. Scott, who was in Paris for the Olympic Games, on Thursday attended the men’s basketball semi-final that saw the United States beat Serbia. He was arrested for “violence against a security guard,” the Paris prosecutor’s office said later on Friday. Scott was arrested and booked into Miami-Dade County Jail in June on charges of trespass and disorderly intoxication.

When Sam Watson set a speed climbing world record of 4.75 seconds in the Parisian suburbs, where a temporary climbing wall has been installed for the Olympics, he became the owner of a unique sporting accolade. “That’s a cool title, no one can take that away I suppose.”For those spectating at a speed climbing event, a moment’s distraction can prove costly. Watson set the previous speed climbing world record of 4.79 seconds at a World Cup event in China earlier this year, before Indonesia’s Veddriq Leonardo matched that time in Tuesday’s heats. “But I did go a lot faster in practice and I did have the idea that it was possible [to get a world record]. Speed climbing is considered a different skill to lead and bouldering, and mastering all three is a near-impossible task.

It’s summer in Edinburgh and visitors from around the world have arrived for the 77th edition of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the chaotic, scrappy, sprawling arts event that opened Friday and runs through Aug. 26. This year, there are more than 3,600 shows on the program, by artists from 58 countries: theater, stand-up, circus and cabaret performances, as usual — but also film screenings, whiskey tastings and a life drawing class with dogs.

The case comes in the wake of earlier NYT reporting that 23 Chinese athletes had tested positive for another banned medication in 2021. They were ultimately cleared in a Chinada investigation that traced the problem back to a hotel kitchen; and they went on to compete. China has cleared athletes of doping charges at least three times in the past, the paper reported.

The economics of the Olympics

“This will be the first Olympics, since Sydney, where the total costs are coming in under $10 billion,” said Victor Matheson, a College of the Holy Cross professor of economics who has researched the financial costs of the Olympics. Workmen adjust banners on the 3x3 basketball venue located at La Concorde, in Paris, ahead of the 2024 Olympic Games. Additionally, the Paris Olympic Village will be converted into offices and housing in a historically impoverished neighborhood. Still, economists say, it may take more drastic moves in the future for the Olympics to be truly sustainable and economically sound. “I love the Olympics, and I love sporting events, but I just really do not think that the way the Olympics works now is a viable business model,” Phalin said.

When the Game Does Not End at the Final Whistle

The goal prompted a barrage of objects to rain down on the field from the stands, followed by a smattering of fans. In the interests of safety, the referee called the players off the field. The game, however, had not ended; it had merely paused. Morocco played out the final few minutes, the stadium now empty, and won, 2-1. Officially, that is how the game finished.

Welcome back to the Olympics, and a five-ringed circus of sport and security, national pride and international sponsorship. This summer’s Games begin in Paris this Friday, with an uncommon opening ceremony: athletes and acrobats floating along the Seine for as many spectators as the antiterror police will allow. France is still processing its recent snap legislative election, which nearly brought the far right to power. The ceremony will be all about France’s openness to the world. Not all the local spectators will approve of the message.

The Athletic explains exactly how the chaos unfolded and why…What happened during the Argentina vs Morocco match? There were wild scenes in the stands, with a number of cups and bottles thrown towards the celebrating Argentina players. (Arnaud Finistre/AFP via Getty Images)A small number of fans wearing Morocco colours ran onto the pitch and were chased by stewards. The official Olympics match blog also stated that the game had ended. The chaos kicked off in the final moments of a lengthy added time, when Argentina’s Cristian Medina headed home in the 106th minute to apparently tie the game at 2-2 - sending Argentina players and fans into raptures. Match broadcasts showed some celebrating Argentina players ducking to avoid objects being thrown by fans toward the pitch, while some Morocco supporters entered the field. “It’s the biggest circus I’ve ever seen in my life,” Argentina coach Javier Mascherano said after the game, according to Reuters. When voters in Tokyo cast their ballot for governor of the world’s largest city on Sunday, they will be spoiled for choice. One who styles himself “the Joker” has proposed legalizing marijuana and says polygamy can address the nation’s declining birthrate. Another is a pro wrestler who hides his face on camera and vows to use artificial intelligence to complete governmental tasks. But in fact, the race is profoundly status quo and the incumbent is projected to win a third term. The proliferation of candidates reflects fatigue with politics as usual, and many of them are unserious attention seekers, creating a farcical, circuslike atmosphere and putting real change further out of reach.

The British Election

But Britain is likely to emerge from the election as an outlier. While the electorates in other countries are shifting to the right, British voters are expected to evict the Conservative-led government after 14 years, in favor of the center-left Labour Party. In today’s newsletter, I’ll explain why Britain is zigging while others are zagging. It included harsh budget cuts after the financial crisis of 2008, the Brexit vote of 2016, the Covid pandemic and a revolving door of prime ministers. Liz Truss lasted less than 50 days after the financial markets turned savagely against her proposed tax cuts.

Those hoping to march to the stadium with Hungary’s fans for their soccer team’s first game of the European Championship were expected to report by 10 a.m. sharp, five hours before kickoff. Some could wear black. Others were to stick with red, white and green, the colors of the country’s flag. The Carpathian Brigade has, in recent years, become perhaps Europe’s most infamous ultra group, its reputation forged by clashing with the police, showering opponents with racist abuse and displaying homophobic banners. In 2021, during the last European Championship, it had to remind members to cover up any Nazi-related tattoos so as not to contravene German law.

Both lay entangled in the Turkish net, sandwiched between a view of reality in front of them and the sound of insanity from Portugal’s fans behind them. So keen must Ronaldo have been to actually watch a Portugal goal being scored, he squared to Fernandes when in on goal for the third. Another, a fully-grown man, almost grappled the Portugal striker with his arm tightly around his neck, which Ronaldo then removed.
