A targeted strike could shut operations for each company, depending on which plants and facilities are struck. One advantage for the union of a targeted strike is the potential to save resources and extend a possible strike. The union members who are on strike are eligible for $500 a week in strike benefits from the union’s strike fund. With targeted strikes, it’s possible that the companies will shut down operations and lay off members who are not technically on strike. GM’s statement did not address what it planned to do if their operations are disrupted by a targeted strike.

The first piece of steel for the Stellantis and Samsung joint venture EV battery plant is raised earlier this year. Many believe the company will decide to have other work done at the Kokomo plants, even if it no longer needs transmissions or engines. A fraction of auto plant payThe Kokomo battery plant is still more than a year away from starting production. The battery plant workers are likely to start at half that, Quirk said. Even the top wage will be nearly 30% below top wage at a UAW plant today, let alone what it could be in the upcoming contract.

All this uncertainty has led markets to lack conviction, flip-flopping as conflicting narratives around inflation rates and Fed hikes prevail. But this week’s readings — just a few days ahead of the Fed’s September policy meeting -— could give the markets direction. “Getting core inflation to 2% won’t come quickly, and upside risks remain,” said Greg McBride, chief financial analyst at Bankrate. And while the Fed generally looks at core inflation, the impact of crude prices often extends into other areas of the economy. Pensions and inflation adjustments: The UAW wants a return of traditional pension payment plans and retiree health care for all UAW members.

He admits the union’s demands are “ambitious” but he insists they’re justified given the automakers’ strong profits in recent years. The automakers have balked at most of the union’s demands, according to the UAW. RaisesThe union demands an immediate 20% raise, and then four additional raises of 5% each. The UAW wants a return of traditional pension payment plans and retiree health care for all UAW members. GM put the cost of the six-week strike by the UAW in 2019 at $2.9 billion.

In an interview with Jake Tapper on CNN Monday afternoon, Fain reiterated that the union’s 145,000 members at those automakers are ready to strike Friday. He said the the union and three companies are still far apart in negotiations for a new contract despite meeting throughout the weekend and again on Monday. No one had any complaints about that but God forbid the workers ask for their fair share,” he said. He said the union told the automakers not to wait to try to settle everything in the final days. They are all on the record as saying they hope to be able to reach a deal with the union without a strike.

In contrast, when UPS was faced with a possible August 1 strike, the company and the Teamsters union both repeatedly said they were close to a deal. Those two sides eventually averted a strike with a deal overwhelmingly approved by the membership. No predictions a deal is closeThe current contracts between the United Auto Workers union and the three automakers all expire at 11:59 pm on September 14, raising the possibility of one or more strike on September 15. The move had relatively limited legal significance since the National Labor Relations Board won’t rule on it before the September 15 strike deadline. A summer of strikesDespite the deal that averted a strike at UPS, this has been a summer of strikes.

New York CNN —Since last year’s Labor Day, US unions have flexed their muscle in a way not seen in decades. When including those smaller strikes, the total number of strikes in the past year increased to nearly 400. The United Mine Workers union never reached a deal on a new contract. The public also sees unions having more power than in the past, and they approve of that, according to the poll. More major strikes loomA number of major labor disputes are still looming.

The complaint accuses the automakers of not bargaining in good faith by not providing any response to the union’s economic demands at the bargaining table. Both GM and Stellantis, which makes vehicles under the Jeep, Ram, Dodge and Chrysler brands, deny the union’s charge that they are not bargaining in good faith. “We have been hyper-focused on negotiating directly and in good faith with the UAW and are making progress. It said it would pay workers far more than employees at the nonunion US auto plants operated by Tesla and foreign automakers. There are 145,000 UAW members at the nation’s three unionized automakers.

New York CNN —The United Auto Workers union reached a tentative deal Thursday to raise wages 25% at Ultium Cells, a company that makes batteries for General Motors’ electric vehicles. The agreement announced Thursday is significant since the Ultium plant is the first US EV battery plant to be represented by a union. The joint statement from the company and the union did not say what the workers are currently paid. Even with the raise, Ultium Cells’ workers will still earn far less than UAW members at unionized auto plants currently making up to $32.32 an hour. Union members at the plant are expected to decide whether or not to ratify the deal on Sunday.

Biden and UAW President Shawn Fain met briefly in the West Wing last month while UAW leadership was at the White House briefing senior staff on their positions. Fain has publicly warned that UAW is prepared to strike, saying nearly 150,000 members will strike if the three automakers do not meet their demands. Ford pointed out that it employs more UAW members and builds more cars and trucks at US plants than any other automaker. For the most part, those plants are joint ventures between automakers and battery makers, and thus will not be covered under the UAW contracts with the Big Three. But the union has yet to reach a deal with plant management on a contract, and workers there are paid about half of what UAW members are paid at the Big Three.

New York CNN —Stellantis and Samsung SDI announced plans Monday for another EV battery plant joint venture to open in 2027. Four major EV battery plants have opened in recent years and 19 more are planned with Monday’s announcement, according to the UAW. By comparison, UAW members with top seniority at a Big Three factory get $32.32 an hour, plus an annual bonus and profit sharing.

CNN —The White House is closely monitoring the upcoming labor talks in the US auto industry, negotiations that could put it at odds with the traditional support of a major union. “As a White House point person on key issues related to the UAW and Big Three, Sperling will help ensure Administration-wide coordination across interested parties and among White House policymakers,” a White House official confirmed to CNN. Sperling, the official added, “will work hand-in-glove with Acting [Labor] Secretary Julie Su on all labor-related issues.” He will need to coordinate across multiple White House offices and other stakeholders across government for this new task. So the shift to EVs, supported by the Biden administration, is a major concern of the UAW heading into these talks. The current UPS contract expires July 31, and the union rank and file has already authorized an August 1 strike without a new deal.

The electric "Ram 1500 Revolution," unveiled at CES in Las Vegas, is a one-of-a-kind show vehicle meant to whet appetites for a production model due in 2024. It will arrive after rivals' offerings in one of the most important segments of the North American electric vehicle market. The real electric Ram truck will launch more than two years after the smaller Rivian (RIVN.O) R1T electric pickup and Ford's (F.N) F-150 Lightning electric truck. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has said the long-delayed Cybertruck will launch this year from a factory in Texas.
