CNN —A judge has scheduled a major defamation case against right-wing cable channel Newsmax to go to trial in late September, putting the battle over 2020 election lies front-and-center at the peak of the 2024 campaign. A trial could have significant implications for the First Amendment and how journalists cover Trump’s election lies. The conservative network doesn’t attract a large audience like Fox News, but Newsmax’s ratings surged after the 2020 election. In addition to the Newsmax case, Smartmatic is also suing Fox News, the fringe far-right cable channel OAN and Trump allies like Rudy Giuliani and Mike Lindell, who peddled the same election lies. An Air Canada chatbot told a customer he could receive a bereavement discount after traveling to his grandma's funeral. Air Canada unsuccessfully argued the chatbot's misleading information wasn't its responsibility. After exchanging emails for three months, an Air Canada representative told Moffatt the chatbot had provided "misleading words." When the case was brought to the tribunal, Air Canada asked the adjudicator to dismiss Moffatt's claim. "In effect, Air Canada suggests the chatbot is a separate legal entity that is responsible for its own actions," wrote Christopher Rivers, the adjudicator.

VINA DEL MAR, Chile (Reuters) - Among the mountains of debris left over from raging wildfires that have killed more than 120 people in Chile are lost dogs and cats, wandering the streets covered in ash and burns. Christopher Romero, 22, was out buying groceries when the fire struck his home in Vina del Mar on Friday. He says his father was able to get his family to safety but their two dogs, Black and Kiara, fled into the night. Nicolas Escobar, the university's veterinary director, said the clinic has attended to more 100 dogs, cats and rabbits since Friday, treating burns, giving oxygen and even reviving some of them. He said the clinic has also been helping track down owners of lost pets through social media or by scanning microchips.
